“Facing [more than 4 years] of imprisonment for taking part in a Zoom call – this is something I have not seen anywhere else and it is shockingly disproportionate.”

When you get slapped with massive fines+ court costs + legal representation for doing f all is it rly a surprise that the people able to do it are generally rich?
@Yair_Rosenberg
I did. Couldn't find any examples of IDF soldiers being killed by suicide bombers. They seem to go for large gatherings rather than just wandering around waiting to see a soldier.

This is a misquote. Michael Sheen did not say that Starmer had any "desire" to "change anything radically".
He said people desire radical change and Starmer is not going to do it.
Go talk to the UN, IEA and IPCC, Claire. They'll side with Just Stop Oil and ask why you've wasted £20 mil locking them up rather than stopping new fossil fuel projects.
Labour want to decimate British jobs and hollow out communities in pursuit of their eco-zealotry.
Their Leader has taken money from the funder of Just Stop Oil - and their Shadow Energy Sec cosied up for selfies with him.
They are not on your side.

Disagree tbh. I went to canvas for Corbyn bc a poll showed it was close and him losing would have been used to discredit left politics. Don't think the polling had leanne close otherwise I'd have gone there. Don't think it's racism. Or at least, it's not a major factor.

Presumably talking about the cohort of 161 he mentioned. Of course some detransition. There is no medical procedure with a 0% regret rate. Point is the regret rate for PBs is v low.
I was referring to you conflating cumulative patients with peak per year patients.
@sensiblehuman96
Your brilliant “gotcha” relies on there being a moral equivalence between racist segregation laws in Alabama and the Criminal Damage Act 1971 in England. Which I’m not sure is a particularly sensible position, Jonny.
@benryanwriter
He clearly didn't mean there was no evidence of anyone ever detransitioning bc that would be ludicrous. I'm not sure what you're trying to do here?
Kids were not rushed into puberty blockers — on average they had around 7 appointments before a referral.
Fewer than 10 (out of 3,300 patients) had detransitioned by the time they were 18.

Why is it always the poor who have to fill in endless paperwork? Give state pension to everyone and tax wealthy pensioners more
While we're hating on Emma Barnett: taxes don't pay for government spending. Someone who has paid more tax has not "contributed more", and does not deserve greater say in how public services are run. Very antidemocratic to suggest otherwise.
There are lies, damned lies, and Emma Barnett's silver-tongued analysis of tax statistics, an abject lesson in how to attack the poor, the sick and the vulnerable using specious logic and clever narrative framing. Truly vile.

Assuming OJ is innocent it's mobilising a pretty longstanding trope abt gay men (that they're all sexual predators). This was used in the past to demonise gay men which resulted in them being denied rights, and played a role in the AIDS crisis where many died.
Took my samples on a road trip to Sheffield. Gonna be learning how to date them with OSL (optically stimulated luminescence). This tells us how long it has been since they’ve been exposed to light ☀️☀️
Six months in prison for a protest march.
Right now, Judges have been told NOT to imprison violent offenders as prisons are overcrowded.
They'd rather imprison protesters than rapists.

If a carbon tax can be made equitable then I am pro. But in the case of air travel I worry the rich will just pay it and the poor will be priced out of flying. Given the rich take most flights, that wouldn't be a good outcome. As Harford says - one of several tools, perhaps?

Next time mention fossil-fuel-driven climate change makes heatwaves more frequent and more severe.
The way we mitigate this is by reducing emissions rapidly NOW.
Missing that crucial context is not acceptable.
Such terrible news. Was looking at a house to rent near Dorchester and this road would have been my commute.

No one forced him to stop, get out his car (blocking the traffic behind him!), and beat up a protester.

So they get a tax rebate, then pay £1.4bn in dividends in the same year... Govt effectively handed £97mn to shareholders to convince water companies to do their job. No amount of "well technically.." changes how perverse that is.

Just FYI 2% of soy grown now is used for Tofu. Vast majority used for animal feed, so you'd still save. Also land used for animals is often not good for crops so would probably be best for rewilding anyway.
@TypeForVictory
They demand no new oil and gas licenses. This is a very reasonable demand based on IPCC and IEA finding there can be no new fossil fuel investment if we are to stay below 1.5.
