Why did I create this account? I am fascinated by the pressure (in-game + travel) demands on the top college basketball refs -- Roger Ayers is the poster child for this w/ his crazy schedule. And I feel like this is an under-covered aspect of college basketball, so here we are.

Roger loved calling this charge. Multiple quick whistles to get everyone’s attention and the sidestep shuffle 10 feet out onto the court to complete the call. 😂

So, Roger just worked games in Hawaii Mon through Wed, took a redeye to California Wed night, worked games in Cali Thurs & Fri, took a redeye to DC Fri night, and now is working a noon eastern tip in DC. A wild schedule, even for Roger’s standards.

This was so odd. In garbage time in the final minute, Roger calls a 5-second call on Dan Hurley’s walk-on son. It seemed like Roger was going to ignore it, but Dan told Roger to call it (like his son should know better than to hold the all while being closely guarded).

I know this won’t ever happen but l think fans would have much more respect for officials (in all sports) if they had to provide postgame interviews to explain certain calls. Most top-level refs including Roger are extremely prepared, well-spoken and thoughtful.

From the other day — here’s video of the T on the Merrimack coach. I’m not sure I’m understanding all the outrage on the T after seeing this. Yes I get it was a close, late game, but you can’t put the officials in the position to make that call with that action.
One last look at Merrimack’s Joe Gallo throwing the towel. Extension of the arm above his head, really seems like he wanted the refs’ attention. Did he think it was a challenge flag?

Roger has worked games on 14 straight days going into today. But that streak feels like it could be in trouble — there’s only 6 games today nationwide involving two Division I teams (and no ACC teams in action).

Life of the most in demand D1 referee making a lot of early mornings, late nights and chaotic travel. Making good $ but hard to imagine how this scheduling comes together.

I wonder…college refs are used to working almost everyday — they do this for 4 months straight. Then when they get to the NCAA Tournament, they’re working one game a week. Does this get them out of rhythm? Are they too well rested and they’re now overthinking everything?

Not that simple. Refs work multiple conferences. You want that so they don’t see the same teams over and over. Roger has worked games in 7 different conferences this January alone (ACC, A10, B12, BE, CAA, CUSA, WCC).

1. Amateur hour by the scorers table crew (and secondarily by the officials) to not properly switch the possession arrow on the previous jump ball.
2. Roger is always the first volunteer to come tell the announcing crew the situation. Loves his TV time!
