I was flattered when my longtime friend Stuart Wade asked me to write a chapter on officiating for his updated COACHING YOUTH BASKETBALL Third Edition: A Guide for First-Time Coaches. Itâs an excellent book (my small contribution notwithstanding). #Amazon

@UVaHoopsRiffs BTW, majority of goaltending and basket interference are judgment calls. The rule as written gives refs the chance to go to monitor if called (which Groover did). It wasn't complicated. I couldn't believe Cory a) seemingly hadn't seen it happen before; b) had no clue on the rule.

@UVaHoopsRiffs That play happens not infrequently and Cory didnât know the rule but kept going on and on about how the ball went in - which didnât matter. Larger point: if he wants to be a better analyst, know the rules like better analysts eg Fraschilla. For the nerds: itâs 9-15.2.a.4.

Congratulations, sir, and thank you for what you have given to the game.
Amazing moment in the final seconds of the Eisenhower-Northwestern girls game as the Wildcats call a timeout to honor official Bernie Mackowski. Tonight was his last varsity game in 51 years of officiating! âŚ@PIAASports⊠#thankyouofficials

@RefObserver17 You donât know the half of it. His annoying presence on broadcasts has long been a point of discussion among UVA fans. The name-dropping, the boring stories of yesteryearâŚit just doesnât stop. Which puts UVA fans in a bind, since (you may have heard) he went there.

@RefObserver17 I looked at TV and unfortunately they had no camera on it. It was 2H 4:14 after UNM basket, USU called timeout. I didnât see anything that led up to it or was escalating. Credit Edwin Young for getting Nunez out of there and USU asst did nice job too. But: should not happen.

@KevG163 It was good for so long, even with horrific takes like the day Ryan and Lupica bragged about never having covered a Kentucky Derby. So much for journalistic curiosity. Grantland Rice and Red Smith rolled over that day. These guys got lazy over time, just checking email for tips.

@AyersRefTracker There are many hacks these guys use, eg a good travel agent, friends in âregular stopâ towns who give them a place to crash and serve as chauffeur, etc. Do you know a pilot with his own Beechcraft or Cessna? That can help too.

@Mikeysurf ACC officiating doesnât have the depth it used to have, and this was a Saturday crew. Saturday crews can be crapshoots in any conference.

@Mikeysurf Again: he has a reasonable point. I suggest he could have said it better, because as stated he makes it sound absolutist that fouls shouldnât be called early and that it messes up his rotation. What else messes up the rotation? Fouls called all through the game, and injuries.

@RefObserver17 I thought the Northwestern call could be defended. This is accidental. Agree re need for rules discussionâŚright up there with challenge system, goaltend rewrite. Get to work, committee.

Re the Ron Sanchez T in Virginia Tech-Virginia: we donât know what was said during time out. Tâs during time outs often come from persistence âbelaboring the point after being told weâre moving onâ rather than a verbal bomb. Oh, and #SaturdayCrew. Expect the bizarre.

@PrestonWillett Although Tony Bennettâs first technical was in his first year. So, âby first year UVA head coaches,â call it a tie maybe?

@SewardTotty I love the thought of looming group penalties leading to player vs player confrontations on hot mics.
