Investing vs trading (Thread) 1/x A) Investing and trading are not the same. B) Split your investable assets into three portfolios: 1) Core/LT 2) Trading 3) Speculative How much you put in each portfolio depends on your ability to replace it (ie age and income)…

Pro Tip: if you need to transfer money across borders, don’t transfer round numbers, since everyone does that. Instead transfer an oddball number, with pennies, say $101,234.56 That’s likely the only such transaction amount hitting the bank that day so it’s much easier to find.

Fed, asset values and inflation (Thread) Since 2009, investors  have assumed that the Fed is their friend and that it had written a put providing a floor to asset values. That has all changed now. The Fed has done an about turn and is now investors enemy.

Perma Bulls will tell you that it’s a broad based rally. If you call 3% of the stocks accounting for over 100% of the market gain a “broad based rally”, then they are right.

The most important chart right now. The amount of money (M2) in the economy has DECLINED for the first time in atleast 60 years. It is now down 2.5% YOY. As prices are rising (inflation), the total amount of money is declining. What do you think will happen to asset prices?

Volcker doubled the Fed funds from 10% to 20% in less than a year. Powell’s Fed has increased the funds rate 7-fold in the last year and is pointing to another double from here. Its moves already are more draconian than Volcker’s.

From spending over 20y as a derivatives trader, I can tell you that the most common error most good traders make is over trading. The risk/reward for retail traders is much worse. The ONLY exception is trading the underlying when you are long gamma and delta hedging your risk.
