Listen Twitter, I have a favour to ask. (favor if you are Am*rican) (por favor if you are Spanish)
I have been promised 4 of these absolutely stunning Arclight Phoenix's if I get 100 likes on this post. I would like to cash in on all my social currency right now.
Hypothetical
Win and in for top 8 of RC
You and your opp make an agreement that if you go to time whoever is behind will concede so someone makes top 8.
Turns are over, you’re very far behind and instead of conceding you take the draw.
Do you think you’re a scumbag?
One of the most common mistakes I see players who are starting to get competitive or "good" and is they are so focused on playing around stuff they fail to find when it is no longer advantageous to do so. Too afraid to get blown out and lose immed. when it may be your only chance
500 Likes on this tweet and I drop my list and thoughts on Temur Lands.
I can guarantee you its better than the stock lists.
1k likes and I will consider a sb guide.
I cant wait to passive aggressively ask wtf my opponents Pokemon card tokens are supposed to be.
"What is this Diglet?"
"Oh, its a Shark Token."
"And your Exeggutor is a....?"
"2/2 Samurai"
Cool. Cool.
PSA: Standard has so many game pieces and different tokens, it’s a crime to use like Pokémon cards or something when there’s so many different tokens. Please use real tokens or have what they are written on them.
Biggest take aways from the PT:
- Boomers being washed doesn't exist.
- Jason Ye made some plays that were good I wouldn't have considered
- Seth's read on opponents hands is unmatched.
- I need to be more open to new ideas (I would have written Vamps off if someone showed me).
Bribing should just be legal in magic.
People "in the know" just do it all the time and its just some unspoken thing and think it just muddies the waters in a lot of ways.
As long as you restrict it to the prizes within the tournament. Just let people say whatever.
Its kind of insane to think how busted companions were pre-nerf. So far removed from that now it just blows me away they were printed as they were. How could you not think that was absolutely broken? The nerf was a huge reduction in power level. and 2 of them are banned in modern
The real question is If my opponent plays a tarmogoyf and I pick it up and eat it and the sleeve and call judge to point out my opponents now 59 card. I deny all eatings and they swear I’ve eaten the goyf. What happens?
When I was a MTG judge I'd occasionally encounter a type of player who would ask questions with the intent to stump you or catch you on a technicality.
Final thought about cheating. It is wild how "free" so many opportunistic cheats are. Which is why it is so important to erase the stigma for calling a judge for even little things. I go to a local event and I see 3 game-rule violations that are easily advantageous for one player
Open decklist is one of the best vibe improvements for Competitive Magic.
Don’t have to make sure my 30 tokens don’t spill out of my deckbox when pulling cards out. No cards are showing etc.
Weird pre game talk about previous rounds is gone.
Simply Zen 👌
Standard is the best format in Magic right now.
-Standard – Gameplay is very good, changing fast
-Modern - Gameplay very good, format stale
-Pioneer – Gameplay good, slow moving
-Legacy – Isn't a format
There are like 5 tier 1 decks in standard and they overlap almost 0 cards. It ranges from all play styles to.
Midrange, ramp, control, combo, aggro.
Is this one of the best standard formats ever?
One of the most common mistakes I see players who are starting to get competitive or "good" and is they are so focused on playing around stuff they fail to find when it is no longer advantageous to do so. Too afraid to get blown out and lose immed. when it may be your only chance
Italian magic player in NYC
- Plays pre-modern for pennies with there Nonno's old deck.
Italian magic players in Italy
-16 round fnm with 3 lunch breaks where top 4 is decided by the best re-creation of Nonna's Risotto for $15k
There’s a running joke among some of us that
@Mengu09
will tweet about some format we’ve never heard of or isn’t popular and there will be 500 players.
“Local pre-modern on Tuesday at LGS, 760 players.” - Mengu tweets probably
Every time I see a post about an Italian Magic tournament it's like 5-10x the amount of players those events would get in the GTA even. They just love Magic so much.
I won more MTGO Challenges than you in 1 weekend in than you have ever won.
I have more top 8's than you since 2021 with playing sub 10 challenges since 2022.
If you wanna stack it up at least have a fucking resume.
Idk why magic culture stinks so much that people feel like they can’t brag about how good they are or how well they are doing. I want to see my homies brag about stuff. I live for that shit. I literally want all that success for you. Brag away!
One thing I don’t miss about paper events is how slow players can take up like 80% of you’re shared clock and not get called for slow play a single time.
TW: Death
My father passed away suddenly yesterday. No warning or goodbyes.
I don’t know what to do right now. I’m aching through my entire body.
I can’t stop thinking about when I found him.
I can’t stop thinking about how much I want to hug him or hear his voice again.
MtgMelee has to be up there for one of the worst products I have seen get a monopoly on a market.
Proves first to market is best strategy when it's not a market worth entering.
People keep talking about playing fair breach.
"you can bolt them 3 times to finish em off"
"you can draw 3 extra cards"
Idk about you boss but an 8/8 murktide is like 5 bolts and what if instead of drawing 3 cards, I drew 1 card and it was a free 8/8 flyer.
Related to my last post but MTGO has become such a crutch for certain game actions that when I get to paper I am like an idiot. I had to call a judge round 1 of the last two Paper PT's to confirm when you cry during mulligans.
Remember, if it's good enough for pros like LSV and Reid Duke to be extremely unlucky in some of the most important games of their careers, it's definitely good enough for you at your local FNM.
The biggest weakness in most Magic players is Mulligaining. (Myself included) The problem with it is it comes with fear of the unknown. Next hand could be bad and if it is you would likely lose "without agency". It introduces an emotional response which hurts decision making.
Modern being the most popular paper mtg format stinks (for me). I don’t like it that much and almost never play in paper so buying a deck to play 4x a year for sick big tournaments when it is most likely to be banned or invalidated within a year is unappealing.
Haven't really shared this on twitter too much but in august I joined a weight loss program and am currently down 54 Pounds.
I am pretty stoked about it.
Was motivated to get healthy so I can be a dad to my daughter as long as she will need me.
One of the worst things that can happen to you as an up and coming "good" player is to start realizing and tasting success and stop the processes that got you there. Stay curious, stay humble. Be ready to lose and learn. Otherwise you're just PTQ mini-boss guy forever.
We can start calling Amulet Titan Tier 1 when the format adjusts to it and it remains a good choice.
This is why Hammer and Murktide sit alone in Tier 1. They are heavily played and adjusted to and still put-up consistent results.
Amulet is worth adjusting to now though.
My mom has passed away.
We had a complicated relationship but we had a lot of good memories.
I know we could have had some more good memories together.
I wish I got to say goodbye.
Most of all, I wish you met Lily.
She would have loved how fun and free you were.
Two dice odd/even may be my favourite for play draw but I’m never doing it again. I never want to have to try and explain to my opponent that it’s 50/50 after they tell me I’m wrong and “they did the math”
2021 has been a strange year for everyone but it has been a great one for My wife and I. This month we purchased our new home and are happy to let everyone know our family becomes 3 January 2022! Couldn’t be happier about both of our lovely additions!
Idk if I'm a voice people care about but I did feel the need to say something. One of my highlights from Edmonton RC was the amount of Non-Cis male opponents and players I saw in the room. As someone with a daughter and a lot of friends and people I care about who are not Cis
Coverage this weekend was sick.
One of my favourite things was seeing how clean and beautiful the Japanese mechanics and board states are and how absolutely abysmal some other players were. It is so insanely rough to play against or watch people with sloppy ass board states.
When sb rules were archaic (like 10 years ago) I once cheated by not calling a judge when I saw a sb card in my opening hand, I mulligained and moved on.
I think about that moment more than I should.
Today was the first time where I looked in the mirror and really felt “holy shit I’ve lost a lot of weight.”
In exactly 7 months I am now down 78 pounds.
I’ve def had stretches of weeks with no progress due to whatever is happening around me but I am so proud of myself.
This looks so bad that it makes me think the player didn’t know what they were doing was wrong. Like a player mana-weaving at pre-release. It’s obviously not okay. But they don’t get that it’s not okay. I don’t know anything about the situation outside this video though. Wild
When people ask why I shuffle my opponents deck at weeklies (even acquaintances), I can now show them this…
People tend to say “it’s not worth my time to shuffle at a $5 weekly”, watch this and please share if you have the same sentiment after.

I think I made some good changes making the mana better and adding grazer (should add a plains)
I don't think I even miss paper magic. I miss seeing my friends. Logistics for playing paper magic fuckin sucked. I hated having to buy a deck for a GP just for it to sit in a deckbox until it rotates.
I love my wife. She asked what deck I’m playing. I told her same I qualified with and I mentioned I played one match to practice. Her response:
“Did you win?” - Her
“Yeah” - Me
“Whooooo!” - Her
She a real one ☝️
Idk who needs to here this but these all count as PTs even if they were easier than our idea of “The PT”:
Mythic Championship
Set Championship
Players Tour
Pro Tour in the 90’s-2000’s
Top 8 the Pioneer Challenge with UR prowess Heavily inspired by
@CainRianhard
(It's just his 75)
Deck felt pretty good. How good the 1 drops were varied massively from game to game. sometimes they looked insane and sometimes they were awful.
What moments in magic most stand out to me?
Crowd chanting
@CCalcano
when he top 8 and he got emotional.
@Vendilion
shouting after his win
@autumnlilypad
being attacked after her win
@CainRianhard
happiness hopping after making top8
Emotion in magic rules.
I love it.
A harsh truth for myself.
I want people to think Im good at Magic more than I want to get good.
Think 4-4'ing 4 RC's in a row has got that imposter syndrome on MAX.
But also I don't want to grind anything to get better.
Maybe sometimes you are actually an imposter.
Another reason people forget that MTGO is harder than paper is you never know what your opponent is playing
In paper you can just see the top8 and your keep or mulls can literally decide the match based on that
Played two local RCQs with UR Control stolen from
@Shadowz2005
.
It was surprisingly good and as fun as it looks.
I did well against Rhinos, Scam, and any artifact creature deck.
Deck seems cool.
I lost in top 4 (1 slot) and won the second (4 slot)
One thing I have learned about Izzet Phx in Pioneer is that 90+% of players have absolutely no clue what they are doing.
I see a subset of good players converge on similar sb plans and ideas and gen pop just does things at worse than random.
Me (a real person): Odd or even?
Them (Baboon): With two dice odd is more favoured!
Me: you can pick odd then
Them (shrilling): Noooo!
They proceed to either pull out the rock paper scissors cards while foaming at the mouth or high roll without the dice leaving the table
Derek got the Re-Q. Couldn’t be happier for my boy. Seeing your friends put in the work and do well is so gratifying to watch. Congrats
@misplacedginger
. Love you buddy
Every time I see a post about an Italian Magic tournament it's like 5-10x the amount of players those events would get in the GTA even. They just love Magic so much.
It's so sick to see people using my decklists again after a year away from MTG. It's a good feeling to have so many really good players put faith in the work/process I have for deck building and selection.
