People are glossing over the fact that she has to commute for 3 hours a day. I did 2 hours a day for a couple months and was absolutely exhausted. Couldn’t do anything but come home, eat, and go to sleep.
She has a reason to cry. Humans weren’t made to work a 9-5 for five straight days, dissociate for two, and rinse and repeat the same thing for nearly 40 years (or more, cause we can’t afford to retire now!).
We deserve to enjoy our lives. We weren’t born to *only* work. Period.

I was applying at a sony studio last week and got through to the design test, spent a solid week working on it, laboring over the other games in their catalog, sent off my app. A day later a feedback-less rejection. Not surprising with the layoffs now but still, demoralizing.

Any layoffs that happen from now until the end of the year are especially cruel. End of the year near the holidays are the WORST time to find a new job. Everyone takes time off so interview process slows to a crawl. It's maddening.

Games are hard to make. Regardless of the score, every project has positives/lessons learned.
I display my "lowest score" game because I'm proud of the time I had working with some of my favorite people in this industry.

I USED to have a lot of money in savings. Lost my first job w/no warning and have never recovered. I’ve lost my job 4 times in the span of 7 years. There’s been no time to build back before the next loss. I don’t think there’s a way I’ll be able to save enough to retire.

And I know well meaning people will give advice like "make sure you have months worth of money saved up in case", but the roles hit and their pay on top of the frequency of mass layoffs, this is impossible for a LOT of those impacted.

This is one of the biggest things I hate about the games industry. I know too many folks who try for years to get in w/ nothing to show for it. Nothing but gatekeeping nonsense.
Reminder that if you’re in, it’s not bc you’re better than the folks still trying. You were lucky.
I'm quickly approaching 3 years of applying to games industry jobs. 3 years of rejections. 3 years of building my own projects. 3 years of receiving emails containing the word "unfortunately." 3 years of not knowing what I'm doing wrong. It's exhausting, and it feels impossible.

Just FYI, Borderlands doesn't use cel shading. It's a comic book style painted by hand by the artists. Every time you call it "cel shading" an artist dies a little on the inside.😆

Commuting takes way more energy than you think. It quickly drains you. This person people are dragging is actually giving 11 hours of her day to her job. So that’s about 55 hours a week. That blows and it’s understandable why she’d be exhausted and frustrated.

My financial windfall I had built up over 6 years never recovered after my first job loss in 2016. Been paycheck to paycheck most of the time since. Every layoff is back to square one. This industry in it's current form is unsustainable.
working in games when you have high anxiety during a mass layoff trend (across the whole industry) is panicking at every new meeting invite like “is this the one where I lose everything” and that’s super fun 🫡

Pondering grapes: Made some real quick/dirty meshes. You quickly see how many tri's you have to get for things to look round and this is too high for something that small. For reference most of the chest gear I've looked at is about 2k tris.🤣🍇
People don’t realize just how many verts you need to make tiny round things. It’s….a lot. Might as well make it grape crystals and go about yo day. 😅

Advice from a dev who relocated across the US multiple times for work. Don't forget to negotiate for relocation packages to cover your move. A relocation package SHOULD cover the whole move. If it doesn't, you might want to reconsider if they won't go any higher.

Same here. I drew cartoons and doodles in the margins all the time. Graduated 13th in a class of 500+. I was fortunate that non of my AP teachers cared that I drew.

Our Raven colleagues were promised raises and job security. Some relocated out of pocket with no help from the company. Meanwhile, the company repays them for all of their hard work by laying them off.

Companies will blast out these tests to multiple candidates (even ones they may not be that serious about) because they know people will agree to them and it’s completely free. No skin off their nose. They don’t have to pay for it.

And if you are making money, you will need to pay self-employment taxes. A thing a lot of non-freelancers don't take into consideration when looking at commission costs. You don't get any benefits from an employer so that should reflect in your cost. 👍
