You know what sucks? How many games I love that "didn't meet expectations". How many games I've played that have follow ups that were so much better bc they learned from mistakes. And now they're setting a precedent that the only options are huge success or studio-ending failure.
Alone in the Dark developer Pieces Interactive has been shut down by Embracer Group after the game failed to meet expectations.

I've seen a sentiment that what's going on in the games industry is "at least mostly just AAA". And while I love indies with my whole heart, its where Ive spent my career, please know and understand this is extremely untrue. Indies are not immune to all the same issues AAA face.

My first layoff was in 2020 when the studio I worked for shut down. I was still pretty new to the industry and it took me 6 months to land a new job. I was terrified my career was ending.
Now, in 2024, I have 5+ years experience and am more afraid than I was in 2020.

This! I'm a little over a month unemployed now. 25 job applications sent (both in and out of the games industry), 2 interviews, mostly rejections/ghosting. Some days I can hype myself up, others I'm COMPLETELY drained.
Good morning.
Job hunts are hard. With each rejection letter or lack of response, you can't help but ask "What did I do wrong?"
Once you hit the submit button, everything's out of your hands. Don't blame yourself. Don't look at it as "I'm not good enough."
Move on to the next.
