Memo to City of Ottawa legal department: ample evidence exists to support a motion in Superior Court for an injunction restraining the incessant truck horns which constitute a nuisance. Indeed the order could also require them to move. Get on it!
My views about the shameful, ignorant and malicious attacks by Pierre Poilievre on the Trudeau Foundation. He doesn't care what he damages or destroys as long as he scores cheap points in the partisan arena.

State of emergency. Police acknowledge they cannot manage. The capital cannot be abandoned to chaos. Time for leadership. Feds must convene table to coordinate with province and city. Make a plan. Set a deadline. If they don't leave, take effective action.
Bravo uOttawa Président Jacques Fremont for showing leadership. Making vaccines mandatory for all on campus makes perfect sense. And as a prof, I will feel safer walking into a classroom this year. Others should do the same!
This is so typical of Pierre Poilievre. Baseless innuendo suggesting corruption, aimed at deepening divisions and encouraging acrimony. He does not possess the qualities of a national leader. Never Poilievre.
Liberals like Allan Rock and Gerald Butts define charities as groups that stuff the pockets of wealthy Liberals.
Liberals are their own favourite charity.
Had a great meeting today with

Chairman

. International cooperation between right-wing, conservative parties is more important than ever. Chairman Harper is a great ally in this respect. Thank you for your support, Mr. Chairman!
Why are Tories allergic to evidence? Harper limits the census that provides so much of it. Clement tries to shut down Insite, ignoring evidence it saves lives. Ford does the same, then kills the experiment on basic income. What are they afraid of? Progress?
Canada must demand that the AU reign in the Abiy regime and stop the wanton violence. Otherwise, the UN should take steps to do so. Never a bystander. Never.

Bob Rae's appointment as UN Ambassador is great news for Canada. He will be a fabulous Ambassador: a global perspective, enormous experience. And what an emotional connection, since his father was a distinguished predecessor! Warm congrats to Bob and Arlene.
Here's just a sample of the hideous nature of political discourse we're in for with Doug Ford back in public life. Crude, ignorant, offensive. Remind you of anyone? It's all so discouraging... Let's show that Ontario is better than this.
I accept Kathleen Wynne’s challenge to three televised debates. Let’s do the first one outside the jail where the senior Liberal operative will be spending 4-months.
Minister of Justice Arif Virani has turned this around, with outstanding appointments at a record pace. Truly a success story for the Minister, his team and the government.
Thrilled to announce that over 95% of federal judicial positions nationwide are now filled—with more to come.

In Afghan crisis, spare a thought for the many Canadian public servants, senior officials and political staffers working diligently (many 24/7) in difficult circs to evacuate desperate people from Kabul and resettle Afghan refugees here in Canada. Thank you!
Something to be proud of, yet not to take for granted. We've created the best country in the world. Now let's promote and protect the values that got us here. Accepting differences. Equal opportunity. Human rights. Social justice.
Incredible mix of appointments for BC today. I can’t help but be particularly excited about Justice Latimer. I’m old enough to know that she had the diligence, intelligence and passion from day one. Sometimes power winds up in the right hands.
The PM's G7 sherpa, Peter Boehm, along with Mark Gwozdecky and their whole team, did an amazing job in the most difficult circumstances imaginable. The Summit prep was flawless and everyone-- with one exception-- thought it the best yet. Bravo Peter!

Frequently forgotten, the "Fair Elections Act" was the Harper/Poilievre attempt at voter suppression and undermining Canadian elections. He must be held to account for these undemocratic proposals.
This is an important point. The takeover of the Conservative Party by the Reform Party is complete. Trumpism oozed across the border and found a host. It’s the Poilievre Party now.

Appointing the highest quality judges as quickly as possible is my top priority.
I'm proud to announce 3 new appointments. 939 of 996 judicial positions nationwide are now filled - over 94%. And that’s without counting the 256 supernumerary judges who sit a 50% caseload.
Sincere thanks and congrats to Ambassador Dominic Barton and the many, many other Canadian diplomats and senior officials whose hard work contributed to the happy outcome for the Two Michaels. How wonderful to think of them safely at home!
This is an historic decision, hopefully to be followed by all other provincial governments. Asylum seekers do not belong in provincial jails! Kudos to Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International for shedding light on this practice.
BC is ending its long-standing arrangement with the CBSA on holding people detained due to immigration status in provincial correctional centres because it no longer aligns with our commitment to uphold human rights, social justice & equity for everyone.
Ford cuts to Legal Aid target some of the most vulnerable. He probably thinks he’s hurting lawyers: wrong. He is hurting those without a voice. They are now without a fair chance to make their case.
"Cost savings?" This 30% cut to Legal Aid will save nothing – it will only cost hundreds of thousands more dollars in appeals resulting from unrepresented litigants, it will result in deportations of people who need protection, it will cause a crisis of access to justice.

The United States is no longer a "safe third" country for those who seek asylum in Canada, according to a Federal Court of Canada decision. Here, Lloyd Axworthy and I urge the government not to appeal, but to comply.

Kofi Annan was a gifted diplomat, a charismatic leader and a tireless worker for peace. Imperfect, like the UN itself, but like it too, deeply committed to advancing human rights and a world without war. Sincere sympathies to his family on this sad loss.
Devastated to hear of the passing of the great Kofi Annan. Blessed are the peacemakers. Mr. Annan was instrumental in building the responsibility to protect. I do what I do because of the path he set. My thoughts and condolences are with his family & friends.
Anti-Semitism is a manifestation of profound ignorance. It is hateful and shameful. Criticizing the Government of Israel for its policies and conduct is one thing. Promoting hatred of those of the Jewish faith is another- and is unacceptable.
This👇👇👇
Antisemitism and attacking Jewish people for being Jewish isn’t pro-anything. It’s not pro-peace. It’s not pro-justice. It’s as intolerable as being anti-Islam and anti-Palestinian.
Stand out: Call out all forms of hate and all atrocities, no matter who commits them.
I wonder if Canada is ready for the fact that unlimited amounts of untraceable money from outside of the country can now very openly flow into our country to achieve any end that it desires.
Some thoughts on Canada's Arctic from Lloyd Axworthy and me. By strengthening our military presence in the North, we can both meet the expectations of allies and enhance our Northern security.
The wellspring of all hatred is ignorance. Antisemitism and Islamophobia are examples. Canadians-- let's denounce and condemn those who engage in hate speech and crimes of intimidation. They amount to ignorance in action.
Paul Heinbecker and I both had the privilege and pleasure of working with Kofi Annan while serving Canada at the UN in New York. Here, we pay tribute to Kofi and his remarkable contributions...
We like to think of Canada as a nation of refuge. Canadians are kind, generous and respect human rights. But look at what's happening in our name at the border, every day. As Lloyd Axworthy and I argue in this op-ed, this has to stop!
A classy person of immense skill and unconditional commitment to public service. Marc Garneau still has so much to offer, and will no doubt find other ways to serve Canada. Meanwhile, let's acknowledge all he's done: thank you!
It has been an honour and a privilege to serve my country in the roles of Minister of Transport and Minister of Foreign Affairs. I wish to thank my caucus and cabinet colleagues, as well as the many public servants & staff who have made my work possible over these past six years.

That erroneous view also overlooks sovereignty as responsibility: and the most basic responsibility of sovereign states to their population is to protect them from mass murder. If they can't or won't, that's a failure of sovereignty and the UN must act.

Appalling. Unnecessary. In violation of Canada's international rights obligations. Indefinite jailing of migrants and asylum seekers is an affront to our values. 90% of detentions are on basis of perceived "flight risk", not public safety. Stop it!

My take on their new report:
Many in Afghanistan face reprisals from the Taliban. Canada agreed to accept the most vulnerable but red tape impedes. Today a number of us sent this Open Letter to the PM and key ministers, calling for urgent action to fix this.
Twenty years ago, Canada and the US entered into the "safe third country" agreement. It assumed that asylum seekers could seek refugee status as safely in either country. That assumption is no longer valid and the agreement must end.
This will come as unwelcome news for those building a political career by spinning fiction about "gatekeepers" and the need to regain our "freedoms". Seems we're doing pretty well after all...
