It’s meeeee! And my girl Gabs! 😍 Y’all are not ready for who I turned Jay G💚tsby into. Shoutout to every kid who’s ever been in my American lit class, and especially the class of 2024, who inspired me to write this version.
I teach juniors & seniors & read to them almost daily. As we finished our final novel, one of my seniors said, “I can’t believe this is the last book anyone will ever read to me,” & I felt that in my soul. And that is why I’ll never stop reading to kids & it’s my hill to die on.
One of my friends had her class make cards for Abby Zwerner, the teacher who was shot. One student said she didn’t want to make a card because she didn’t care and the teacher probably did something to deserve it. In case you were wondering where we are in this society.
“He has little pockets.” That’s what the teacher who told admin she thought the child had moved the gun from backpack to pocket was told. And that was just one of FOUR attempts to prevent this tragedy that day. Stop 👏 dismissing👏teacher👏concerns!👏
Justine: I’m pregnant. We have 8 kids. Michael: Excellent. Quit your job. I’m off to dabble in a local studio. We’ll be millionaires by nightfall. Go buy us matching shirts to celebrate.
#LoveAfterLockup
The constant lowering of standards to teach is such a slap to those who went to school,professionally trained, earned a degree & have made it our life’s work. As this trend continues, the public will continue to lose respect for us & not view us as professionals. So demoralizing.
I’m curious if the “do away w/grades” crowd has Ss who happily do all their work for the love of learning & where is this Utopia they work in b/c I don’t know many Ss who are willing to do things unless it’s for a grade. Many T’s can’t get some to even work FOR grades, so 👀.
@TeacherOnTopic
A few years ago, I was at a child’s party, and when a woman came out of the bathroom, a kid goes, “Did you use the potty? Good job!” and clapped. Priceless.
I’m convinced a kid could turn in an actual bag of dog 💩 and some of y’all would say, “They obviously didn’t understand the rubric. Did you model expectations? How about a little grace?”
What I’ve learned this month:Let 100+ Ss turn in work whenever they feel like it, give feedback on everything, but never grade outside contract hours, let them come 47 min late carrying a latte & wearing a bikini & give them a pen every day b/c the important thing is they came.🫠
Oh, Teacher Twitter. You never fail to disappoint. Some of you are really on here yelling at teachers to give kids a pencil even when the teachers are telling you they can’t because they literally don’t have one to give. 🥴
Just saw an article about motivating students and a teacher had an assistant principal suggest they motivate students with gift cards. Excuse me? We should buy kids gift cards for doing the bare minimum? With our own money? 🥴🫠

I’m waiting on Sheldon walking in on him cheating. The dad he always describes in TBBT seems like a dick. YS version dad is lovable, not what I expected, so curious how they will handle that moment in the show.
@k8roulette2
I know someone who got hired as a reading teacher & quit in a month. She was an English major in college but not for education. I think she thought all she had to do was read books w/the kids all day & was not prepared for all the actual WORK people don’t seem to know we do.
Told the foolish mortals they could make a 3x5 notecard for the test tmrw, & now one is messaging me asking if it can be 3x5 FEET b/c I didn’t specify inches. 🤦♀️
@SaraSchon
OK I watch too much true crime because everyone is joking you about missing the flirting and I’m over here thinking you smartly got away from danger. 😂
@ask_aubry
He doesn’t believe in women going to bed early? So they have to stay up until his arbitrarily acceptable time? Doesn’t sound like he’s worth staying up for TBH.
Them: Teachers are lazy. Teachers are groomers. Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to choose books or to acknowledge to children that gay people or racism exists. Teachers should leave politics out of the classroom.
Also Them: Teachers should have guns.
‘Murica 🥴
@msblackteach
Our school district has done it ever since the initial shutdown. And they also provide free breakfast & lunch during the school year as a result. I hope this never changes. No child should go hungry.
Came home yesterday with a migraine, went to bed at 7, woke up with it still. Whyyyyyyyyy? I blame this weird weather. Do atmospheric changes give y’all headaches like they do me?
@NicholasFerroni
I never understand having days labeled as different things. Call it what you want. Take it from whichever “bank” you wants. I ain’t coming and I give nonefux what label you give the day.
@tetheredtoed1
In my experience, the talking is constant when the room is arranged in groups, so I stopped doing it. I still allow mine to collaborate on most work. The room doesn’t have to be permanently arranged in groups to encourage collaboration.
@EDUwithEmily
I truly don’t understand this. Those additional assignments are something that might make or break acceptance of a position. It’s not the position you applied for!
@sage_stage
The school or district. Parents should not have the option to “opt out” of services necessary to keep others safe or keep an undisrupted learning environment. Their “opt out” should be to homeschool. We need to stop letting parents dictate how schools function.
@sage_stage
One time my sub didn’t show up. Another teacher discovered this when she popped in to check on things and found the class sitting quietly doing the work I left for them. I was so proud. 😂
@plcEvangelist
People use TPT to get an occasional unit, activity, etc when they are too busy to reinvent a wheel. Nobody uses it for an entire course curriculum. 🥴
Today my most challenging class informed me I’m the only teacher they have they’d be willing to go buy snacks for and their others can just starve. So….win? 😂
@TheREALTeacher8
I’d press charges myself. They don’t have to rely on the school to do it. If a kid ever intentionally hits me, I’m pressing charges. No discussion.
@locdeducator
I teach high school & don’t like hmwrk other than reading b/c my Ss have school all day, sports/clubs, jobs. When I have work all day, then a mtg & have to run an errand,by the time I’m home & have dinner, last thing I want is more work. So I don’t want them to have more, either.
Brandon sent Mary all his money, paid for that house they live in, she refuses to ask her family for help, deliberately gets pregnant while they have no jobs, and now suddenly thinks Brandon is a POS?
#90dayfiancetheotherway
Based on many responses to my tweet about 4x4 scheduling, it’s clear many teachers don’t know the difference between block scheduling and 4x4 scheduling. 😵💫
@Literature_Lady
I suspect it’s the fallout from 2 1/2 years of Covid “grace.” People can deny it all they want, but many, many students got away with doing nothing or next to nothing, getting credit for turning in anything, etc. I don’t lack compassion for them, but it was out of control.
I am presently on hall duty witnessing a young man speak to his girlfriend about behaving appropriately at school and being where you’re supposed be when you’re supposed to be there and keeping out of trouble. It’s so wholesome. 🥹
@notcapnamerica
For me, it wasn’t sticker shock but it was headache medicine. You know how when you’re growing up, aspirin, cold medicine, cough syrup, etc was just always there? My first place, I was there, looking in an empty medicine cabinet going, “Oh. I guess I’m the one who buys that now.”
Whew…some real holier than thou takes on that “people without kids” thread. Why do so many people with kids think they’re superior? It’s almost as embarrassing as the “teachers get summers off” crowd. 😂
@KoloheMama
@EThorntonGHS
Additionally, leave people alone for not being cold! Me: a displaced Yankee in the south, not wearing a coat over my sweater to walk from my car into work in 50°. Them: How are you not freezing?! Me: Because I’m from Chicago.
For my girl
@k_zookk
"Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission." I'm sorry there are those missing the point of your tweet and the spirit with which it was intended! 💞
@TheREALTeacher8
A kid hits me, and I’m pressing charges. Enjoy that one day of OSS staying home eating pizza rolls, kid, because your life is about to get all kinds of fucked up.
@TeacherTired4
I’ve stopped doing those things. You can’t tell me to practice self care and then force me into an awkward anxiety-inducing situation for funsies.
April is acting the same way Ed did when he visited Rose’s home. I will never understand why Americans are so shocked and rude when they visit other countries.
#90DayFianceLoveinParadise
@ModestTeacher
Context matters here. I know plenty more than parents when it comes to what I have been professionally trained and experienced to do for a living, just as I assume they know more than I do when it comes to what THEY do for a living.
Do any of y’all teach on a 4x4 schedule? Our district is moving to it next year, and I am STRESSED about pacing, not being able to do a lot of the things I currently do, and having no wiggle room. 😫
#TeacherTwitter
@yesthatteacher
Reminds me of a parent a couple years ago who wanted the district to “disable” the Chromebooks at a certain time at night b/c her kids were up late playing games on them & she tried hiding them but her kids snuck in her room at night to steal them back. Ma’am. 🥴
@TeacherTired4
Why? What would happen if you just didn’t go to the meeting? Not being snarky; genuinely curious b/c I have colleagues who never have to attend anything “because kids.”
@ReadTheSyllabus
In a college class? 😂 I had to start telling my high schoolers prior to every test that if they’re absent, they need to take care of that before test day. You wouldn’t think it would have to be said. I’d die before I tried something like that in a college class. 🤦♀️
@VictoriaTheTech
I once had a student who had heart surgery, and according to his parents, I was the only one excusing the majority of the work. Like…what? This kid has more to worry about than anything we’re doing in class.
My juniors name their “green lights” when we read G💚tsby. This is mine from last year. This weekend, those kids graduate, but last year they inspired me to write a book & this week I’m thrilled to be joining the
@WildInkPub
family with my debut novel!
@Ed_Realist
@HeatherL114
Middle and high school teachers do have to go to IEP meetings if they have students with IEPs, though. Not sure why you think they don’t.
@KamalaHarris
There are already thousands of tweets and posts saying this. We don’t need more tweets stating it, especially from people in positions of power; we need action.
@MatthewMooreWFU
@thekatrinagriff
Because it implies that if students choose not to participate and/or do work it’s because the teacher didn’t “sell” it enough instead of accepting that some students simply don’t feel they need to do the work.
@RogersHistory
@theDRAMAgoat1
They get overlooked. People are hell-bent on excusing disruptive behavior as trauma-induced while simultaneously ignoring the fact that those behaviors might be causing trauma for others in the room.
@k8roulette2
I also question how much coverage he did. I’ve been teaching 23 years, & it wasn’t until the last couple years that I ever had to cover a class or knew of any of my colleagues having to do it. Not saying it never happened, but that seems sus.
Yesterday: School all day, event, home an hour before bedtime. No way could I have done any work then. Many kids live that schedule regularly. HOW can they be expected to do much homework?! It’s not right. Moderation!!
#DitchHW
First day of Pre-Service today. Our admin provided us a huge breakfast and opened with saying there’d be no ice breakers because they know how we feel about those. It was a great first day. 🙌
