Led by their Chairperson, Dr. Peace Shalom Ogaranya, YOCAC emphasized the critical role young advocates must play in shaping cancer awareness, early detection, and prevention efforts in Nigeria. Recognizing the urgent need for greater support, YOCAC sought AHBNโs guidance in amplifying youth-led solutions in the cancer space. As a long-standing partner of the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), AHBN reaffirmed its commitment to empowering YOCAC with strategic support, technical expertise, and advocacy tools to drive impact. During the discussions, AHBN provided key recommendations, including: โ
Strengthening media advocacy, particularly engaging the Honorable Minister of Health to integrate YOCAC into youth-focused health initiatives. โ
Mobilizing political will through online campaigns advocating for an improved Cancer Health Fund, specifically addressing cancers affecting young people. โ
Developing a structured work plan to scale outreach and impact. โ
Organizing press conferences & panel discussions, bringing together youth voices and donor partners to drive actionable commitments. โ
Ensuring all initiatives remain youth-led to foster ownership and sustainability.

Wednesday, February 5, 2025, the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) senior team, led by Coordinator Dr. @AminuMagashiG and Hon. @Mohd_Usman2012, paid an advocacy visit to Dr. @AdoJGMuhammad (OON), the Senior Adviser to the Director General Budget Office of the Federation. During the meeting, the AHBN team provided an overview on AHBNโs Immunization advocacy and accountability work across some states and national level. The team emphasized the need for a dedicated platform to discuss health budget performance and track fund releases including immunization financing. They proposed that the DG budget office should create a quarterly budget performance forum where civil society organizations (CSOs) and other professional bodies will be engaged in the review and tracking of progress including budget performance, bottlenecks and challenges. Dr. Ado Muhammad welcomed the suggestions and affirmed that the Budget Office prioritizes the health sector in the 2024 and 2025 fiscal year, with vaccination as a key focus due to its effectiveness in disease prevention. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with the Director General on supporting partners like @gavi in co-financing efforts and improving vaccine resource tracking to ensure that allocated funds effectively reach the intended beneficiaries. He also enjoined AHBN to return to the ministry of budget and planning to hold further discussion after the assent of the 2025 budget by Mr. President to advocate for the quarterly health budget performance forum between the DG office and the CSOs. @Fmohnigeria @muhammadpate @PlanningNG @BudgetOfficeNG

AHBN Commends Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for creating Office of the Special Assistant on Health Security Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) commends the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for establishing the Office of the Special Assistant on Health Security, a critical step in strengthening Nigeriaโs health security including the ONE Health approach which is a multistakeholder response with health, environment and agricultural sectors. Since COVID-19, the ONSA has remained consistent and has prioritized health security, playing a key role in coordinating security agencies and mechanisms to enhance national preparedness including its role in convening the 2021 National COVID-19 summit hosted by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19. We also appreciate the inclusion of AHBN in the Linking Public Health Emergency with Security Authorities TWG (LPHSTWG), a technical working group that has been in existence and continues to drive multisectoral collaboration for a stronger health security framework. AHBN looks forward to participating in the TWG through our unique advocacy and accountability role. During AHBN advocacy visit to the ONSA in October 2024, we emphasized the need for sustained commitment to health security, financing and accountability. With the emergence of the Office of the SA on Health Security at ONSA, we look forward to the office being made permanent which solidifies Nigeriaโs efforts in safeguarding public health and making it a national security agenda. @NuhuRibadu
