This is shocking - 3/4 of newly homeless families are lone parents. We urgently need a targeted approach to stop these children being left behind by rental and housing costs
The homeless figures published today continue a worrying trend. Since March 2023, an additional 200 families and 370 children became homeless. Lone parent families account for 147 out of the 200. As more lone parents are housed in hubs, history starts repeating itself.

Child maintenance will also be excluded from social welfare means tests- this will make a big difference to struggling lone parents. Child maintenance is for children and should not be means tested by any Govt Dept.
This is welcome & was originally announced in December so it's good to see regulations being signed off. This is something, we and the other nine members organisations of the National One Parent Family Alliance (NOPFA) have pushed for a long time.
We are pleased that Government listened to us last year and finally increased the Single Person Child Carer Credit by €100 to €1750, but this continues to inexplicably lag behind other individual tax credit rates.
