Residents & ratepayers in the City of Yarra who want to see the council return to putting us first. A broken council with a broken culture that needs fixing.
Yarra is in financial crisis and they want you to pay for their own mismanagement and mistakes with a bin tax designed to bypass the rate cap so they can hike it up over the coming years sky high. 1/10
3 years ago, Bandt demanded the resignation of a candidate over some vile, but not illegal social media posts years earlier. Today he has a representative on council with 19 serious criminal charges and has not said a word. Why don't the Greens abide to consistent standards?
Another day and another packed meeting flowing onto the street opposing the
#yarrabintax
and service cuts in Collingwood. Unprecedented opposition to council spin and disinformation. This is political suicide for
@YarraCouncil
.
@stephenjolly99
More scenes of packed streets opposing the
#yarrabintax
. Tonight's venue is Fitzroy North. Do you think
@YarraCouncil
have figured out how much they have antagonised the community yet?
Another packed turnout in Richmond against the
#yarrabintax
- this time on Boyd St. Is the messaging getting through to Yarra yet that the community don't want a bin tax?
@tonytardio
The State government was caught out lying today claiming they consulted with residents at victoria park and working with the communities. Not a single consultation or meeting with the ministers has ever happened.
@JacintaAllanMP
and
@BenCarrollMP
are playing gutter politics here
Breaking: Controversial proposed changes to Yarra Council's Code of Conduct have been scrapped: specifically, a ban on councillors criticising a Council decision, procedure or policy. Plans to direct all media queries to Yarra's media team also dumped.
#springst
This is completely offensive from Gabrielle de Vietri and she needs to offer a full and unreserved apology. The politicisation of remembrance day with her ignorance and politics was completely inappropriate and insensitive. Once again Gabrielle fails to read the room.
The Bin Tax Passed 6-3.
Remember that Councillors Landes, Stone, Crossland (Greens), Wade (Greens) and Mohamud (Greens) voted for this.
More importantly, remember that our community oriented Councillors Stephen Jolly, Bridgid O'Brien and Michael Glynatsis voted against this.
It's time. Yarra Council needs to be sacked.
The level of dysfunction has hit unprecedented heights.
Until now we have held off calling for this in the hope that common sense will prevail. 1/4
As we called out 12 months ago and revealed in our budget analysis just weeks ago, the Yarra bin tax is set to go up by 30% this year, evading the rates cap as it was always designed to do. This is an increase of nearly 11x the ratecap.
@IanRoyall
@lauraplacella
@tonytardio
At least 23 emails to
@JacintaAllanMP
and
@BenCarrollMP
from residents and they haven't replied to a single one. Yet they claim they meet with us to the media and are working with us while doing everything possible to do the opposite. Outright lies.
There is no room in Yarra for intolerance towards any community group based on a conflict that is happening half way around the world. It is disappointing as Hope St Radio and This Mob have both been beneficiaries directly or indirectly of CoY grants and 1/3
@MeljCunningham
The Yarra Greens want to silence other councillors and make them follow the Greens party line while failing to enforce the existing code of conduct on their own councillor up on 19 serious criminal charges.
@s_deery
@IanRoyall
As we predicted 12 months ago, the Bin Tax is being hiked 30% - 11 times higher than the 2.75% rate cap! This means everyone can expect to pay 30% more for their bin levy. This has exposed Yarra last year as having lied when it clearly introduced the Bin Tax to evade the rate cap
@AdamBandt
How about you start local where your Yarra Greens are trying to run local sporting clubs out of business who rely on volunteers who contribute an invaluable amount to the community
It was incredible to hear your Yarra Leader defend this policy tonight after the council pulled it
Financial reform needs to be the first step, NOT hitting the community with new bin taxes that will expand by tens of millions of $$$ in years to come.
The reason they have avoided consultation is simple - they just want to impose this on the community with no transparency. 1/5
Yarra has 9.77 staff per 1000 residents, more than any other council in Victoria and nearly double some other local councils. Are we surprised that 3 years into this council term there hasn't been a single financial reform? 1/2
@IanRoyall
Quite unbelievable. For the first time we believe in the history of this council, meeting has been cancelled because the executive doesn't think they have anything to discuss. New administration has a reputation for being secretive and not transparent!
@suzandelibasic
@IanRoyall
The data is clear. Bike lanes have been significantly overprovisioned in places like Melbourne and Yarra. Balanced initiatives which cater for the other 96% need to be prioritised rather than lobbyist driven political agendas.
@sallycapp
Tonight's council meeting at Yarra is only what could be described as a complete shitshow. CEO and Mayor Edward Crossland have managed to alienate the entire gallery blocking nearly half the people who registered to ask questions. The gallery is impatient with this incompetence.
Congratulations
@YarraCouncil
for taking the award for the most complained about council in Victoria by its residents. 1.27 complaints per 1000 people. That's 1 complaint per 7.7 staff members if we combine it with yesterday's data that Yarra has the most staff per resident too!
Yarra has 9.77 staff per 1000 residents, more than any other council in Victoria and nearly double some other local councils. Are we surprised that 3 years into this council term there hasn't been a single financial reform? 1/2
@IanRoyall
The community has had a couple of weeks to reflect on the complete disregard for consultation and the bin tax debacle. Discussions amongst community groups have been damning of the latest display of incompetence, arrogance and lack of professionalism on display for all. 1/12
No doubt City of Yarra will try to use this as an excuse to not deliver to residents and we will inevitably see the bin tax jacked up to bypass the rate cap.
@najsambul
Collingwood parents are taking aim at Yarra Council for tearing down much-loved play equipment in favour of sculptures and a metal balancing beam.
The controversial park 'upgrade' cost more than $2 million.
@reid_butler9
#9News
Angry Abbotsford families say they've been blindsided by plans for a permanent overnight rail maintenance facility.
They claim the noise is unbearable and their pleas to the government have been ignored.
@reid_butler9
#9News
$200k on sculptures to "Dishboy Dreaming"(sculpturist William Eicholtz) yet $40k on a swing. It is clear that at the last minute Yarra deleted the planned playground to pay the sculpturist these crazy amounts for sculptures yet there is no room for a playground out of $2m?
If there was any doubt as to whether there was Greens political interference in the operations of City of Yarra - that is now gone. State Greens MP staffers have been revealed as being used to write council press releases.
Standing room only for a highly energised turnout for Bin Tax street meeting. highly articulate community calling out council with several members highlighting the bin tax is excluded from the rate cap and will be hiked over several years. Not a good look for Yarra Council
We guess the Bin Tax v2.0 is a "modest sum of money" if you are out sailing on the back of a Yacht.
To register to speak at the council meeting on March 14th you need to do so 6:30pm on Monday the 13th.
This is offensive, divisive and Cr Mohamud should offer the Yarra community an apology for this inappropriate gesture. This has no place in a local council and Cr Mohamud should be ashamed and learn to understand what the purpose of a local council is.
Congratulations to the residents of Glen Eira who successfully fought to abandon the poorly thought out and anti-community Inkerman corridor bike lane. Councils need to work with the community to achieve outcomes rather than pushing extremist political agendas with no support
A great interview between
@stephenjolly99
and
@tjch9
As Tony Jones said - "If you can't balance your books it isn't their (ratepayers) problem". Spot on. Council has a spending problem and hasn't made a single reform..
#yarracashgrab
Absolutely shambolic.
@YarraCouncil
is in crisis. No leadership to be seen instead hiding reports and reducing democracy.
This needs to be fixed. Bad governance led by Greens and an executive team that works against residents which the monitor did not address.
@IanRoyall
Clearly yet another situation where the Greens are using local councils completely innapropriately as their political stepping ladder. No council should be commenting on international conflicts. Councils need to stay in their lane and international politics is not their lane.
Merri-bek council in Melbourne's inner north has moved a motion, weighing in on the conflict in the Middle East. It will now write to the prime minister to call for an immediate ceasefire and fly the Palestinian flag for six months. To discuss
@Rebecca7Maddern
spoke with
Victoria Park (Abbotsford) Residents on
@9NewsMelb
tomorrow night. Maybe
@JacintaAllanMP
and
@BenCarrollMP
should tune in and learn a thing or two about the local community they are terrorising.
This is not good enough from
@JacintaAllanMP
or
@metrotrains
. The residents in Abbotsford deserve better than this and to be able to sleep at night in peace. Residents shouldn't be forced to live across the road from an all night industrial facility built on lies.
@IanRoyall
@rachelbaxendale
Unfortunately this is not surprising behaviour given what reisdents have had to suffer through here in Abbotsford (Victoria Park) with a secret maintenance facility being built without the department telling residents what it was for until after it was built.
Calls for the Local Government Minister to step in and fix the dysfunction and lack of priorities at the City of Yarra. Monitor Yehudi Blacher was appointed to fix this two years ago and didn't.
Why was Yarra Council resources being used for a Greens Campaign event with Gabrielle De Vieti? Not good enough from the council or Gabrielle. She was clearly listed as hosting the event. Where is the integrity?
@rachelbaxendale
CEO Sue Wilkinson should follow the Geelong's lead in blocking motions which have nothing to do with local government and are just councillors trying to bring their personal soapbox into council chambers. No matter what side of the conflict one is on, it is inappropriate. 2/2
Surprise surprise, Yarra in the news for not meeting their obligations yet again. The law is simple. Yarra is responsible for keeping the municipality clean.
Roads, rates and rubbish - they're supposed to be the core responsibilities of local councils but increasingly, the basics are being neglected.
Tonight in a special
#9News
investigation,
@reid_butler9
reveals the Melbourne municipality, winding back street-sweeping services.
Yarra's "Financial Sustainability Strategy" which has been published on the meeting agenda attachments is nothing short of an absolute joke. This is a council with a spending problem and is in complete denial.
There is absolutely no reform or management of expenses. 1/17
Another packed night in Abbotsford for the community councillors
@stephenjolly99
, Bridgid O'Brien and Michael Glynatsis hearing from locals unhappy with a financially inept council that isn't delivering.
This is how things are done in Yarra City Council now. There is no consultation. Secret reports that are buried from public view. Councillors hiding behind "confidential briefings" that have no justifiable reason for the matters being discussed to be confidential.
@IanRoyall
1/3
Just like that, the Abbotsford Farmer's market is gone. What are the other ripple effects of the damaging way state government handled the Children's Farm debacle last year? Once again, the community loses.
@crikey_news
@michaelfowler08
@carawaters
Those who missed
@stephenjolly99
Bin Tax speech for the community to a standing ovation. This is why he gets community support. He works for the community, not against them unlike other councillors who continually undermine and ignore the community.
It is 2023 and a council with a $223m budget and 900 staff members can't even get their webstream working. As residents, another example of an overstaffed inefficient and incompetent council.
The Council are voting to approve a pay rise for the CEO tonight too!
Gabrielle, You were Mayor of Yarra and voted against social and affordable housing in 2021. How can you claim any sort of moral superiority over matters of Housing?
This May budget I am challenging Labor to make more homes available for people who will actually live in them with a 90-day cap on any home listed on platforms like airbnb.
Will they come to the table or out themselves as the party for property investors?
@hierobadge
@yarraresidents
Ratepayers simply want local government to focus on doing its job. Foreign policy is the responsibility of federal goverment. When council wastes time and resources on issues outside its remit it is neglecting its duties.
Claiming for an in home nanny during lockdowns when Richmond Candidate and ex Mayor Green Gabrielle De Vietri was not an essential worker and other parents were juggling work from home with kids just doesn't stack up as reasonable.
@IanRoyall
@TomElliott3AW
@3AW693
This council, which has been plagued by issues with bloc voting amongst the greens and greens-aligned councillors, it is time to talk about the underlying issues of financial incompetence. 1/8
The heavy machinery is back at Victoria Park being unloaded with no spotters or safety considerations blocking the whole street for nearly 30 mins. Thanks
@JacintaAllanMP
and
@metrotrains
yet again for disrespecting locals.
@WorkSafe_Vic
need to investigate.
@IanRoyall
@3AW693
This is a council that is simply shifting the financial problems it created onto the community because it can't manage its outrageous spending habits. 6/10
On 3AW to talk about the absurd $191,000 for a couple of sculptures while the kids playground was removed. This outrageous misuse of public money really draws attention to the incompetence of
@YarraCouncil
while the children suffer.
@heidimur
$100k per year to find their own political activism but they cut services and won't provide the $85k a year to ensure we have a weekly recycling service. Plenty of money for pet projects while cutting funding to our services to fund their own political agenda. Put residents first
Lies. These comments from
@BenCarrollMP
is a complete lie. None of this is true and the minister alongside
@JacintaAllanMP
is trying to fabricate an alternative reality to our local Victoria Park residents who they have systemically ignored. This is shameful and unethical.
This current Council Term at Yarra has been ranked by residents as the worst on record in Council Satisfaction, Value for Rates and Making Decisions in the Community's best interests. The report card from Yarra for the 4th year in a row is absolutely appalling ... (1/2)
On Tuesday night, Yarra council is discussing a proposal to spend $2.2m on a fence at Burnely golf cause for a problem caused by CityLink. Why would this council consider a proposal for something that should be picked up by Transurban and the State Government? 1/7
How out of touch can
@YarraCouncil
comms department be? They butchered and removed the playground, made the pocket park family unfriendly and now showing a kid under the sculpture after national news coverage of Vic's worst playground. Could they have stuffed this up any more?
The Bin Tax is hitting resident mailboxes and at a time when households are under more financial pressure, the time could not be worse for people. The discussion today reflects a very disaffected and annoyed community
#yarrabintax
Yarra Council has had to embarrassingly admit it breached its own planning rules. The $2.2m golf course redesign was completed in a heritage overlay area with no planning permit removing over 100 trees! This council and its councillors cannot be trusted to do their basic jobs 1/8
This is not a proud moment for Yarra's Monitor Yehudi Blacher or
@VictorianLabor
who made his appointment. Yarra needed true leadership aligned with the community - not an overpaid lazy bureacrat who worked against the community and couldn't be bothered turning up to meetings.
Since Yehudis appointment:
- Transparency and community engagement has gone backwards
- Councils financial position has gone backwards
- Councils protectionist methodology, both physically (wall of Yarra) and metaphorically (unjustifiably unreleased reports) has gone backwards /2
Yarra is in financial crisis and it is advertising $100k (more once super is added in) for a Climate Emergency Engagement officer. How on earth does this get approved? Notwithstanding actual climate initiatives that make sense, what a waste of money for pure virtue signalling.
Our analysis shows that the waste costs increases are trivial to their own gluttonous waste and financial crisis of the council's own making.
We did an analysis of their staff and management costs from 2009 to 2022. 3/10
The City of Yarra is the grinch that stole Christmas at this new Collingwood park with the worst playground in Victoria! They spent over a million dollars on this poor excuse for a playground.
Yarra City Council has the highest expenses of any other metropolitan council! Even higher than the City of Melbourne. Our expenses are out of control. We pay some of the highest rates going around. Yarra needs to reign in its spending before slugging our residents higher rates.
@theheraldsun
Once again more completely ridiculous comments from this MP. You'd think that this was satire! Unfortunately not - this is real and serious from this MP who has shown she doesn'tunderstand that Puffing Billy is a public asset (unlike the private venues she wants taxpayers... 1/2
In the same time, their Senior Officer and Executive costs blew out with a staggering 288% increase from $2.7m to over $10m.
Yet this council wants to tell you that you need to pay 2 bin taxes because waste costs are too high? 5/10
The Yarra Energy foundation is an opaque organisation which has taken millions of dollars of ratepayer funds over the last 10 years, employing staff and providing no demonstrable benefit to the community. There is no reason for it to exist. (1/6)
@IanRoyall
How embarassing and hypocritical.
“How out of touch can you be with the challenges facing residents?"
“It would be nice to go out on the bay and avoid the overflowing bins of Richmond.’’
Our state MPs are supposed to represent their electorates. International conflicts are not state issues. This divisive conduct is completely inappropriate from Gabrielle De Vietri and the Greens. It is insensitive and she is now using state parliament as her personal soapbox.
People have the democratic right to run for elections without being bullied and having inaccurate slurs put against them. Do these sorts of tactics belong in a council election?
This is not on. Streets Alive Yarra in the City of Yarra have devolved to vitriolic 1/3
Minister Hutchins: "wouldn’t rule out the local government minister reviewing the rate capping applications"
"She criticised the City of Yarra for not consulting the community before voting on the waste charge, a requirement under the state’s rates system."
@rachael_dexter
It has nearly been a week and
@YarraCouncil
2nd August meeting is still not available for viewing following what was reported to have beena "dysfunctional" meeting. Governance continues to get worse.
@VictorianLabor
need to step in
@CMI_Vic
@ratepayersvic
The community has just heard residents have been locked out of the
#binthebintax
meeting downstairs.
@YarraCouncil
knew there was going to be a large turnout and doesn't organise appropriate facility. Dysfunction at its best.
Yarra Council has panicked and deferred the vote on Clifton Hill Tennis club after strong community turned up. Council was set to rubber stamp rejecting the community request until they saw the mass of submissions and panicked in paralysis yet again... How is that Monitor report?
Yarra FAILS on community consultation yet again. 89 people opposed the Yarra leisure increases in submissions while just 6 supported it.
How is this continuing to happen under Monitor Yehudi Blacher's watch? He is there to improve governance and community cooperation. (1/2)
The
#yarracashgrab
is complete with no consultation from the council at all. The lack of consultation has left local residents with no trust for this disrespectful council.
A controversial bin tax will go ahead in the City of Yarra, despite furious residents protesting on the steps of Richmond Town Hall last night.
Council Watch vice president Dean Hurlston explains why community members are so outraged.
#9News
"the council's 826 employees sucks up 83 percent of rates revenue"
This is unsustainable. Instead of fixing their budget, Yarra slugging residents with a bin tax instead of fixing their bloated spending.
@IanRoyall
Here is the breakdown of the costs for Melbourne's worst playground. Staggering. Anything $300k should have been public tender as well under the council's procurement rules and only the CEO can sign off on an exemption. Did CEO Sue Wilkinson sign the exemption for this?
On 3AW to talk about the absurd $191,000 for a couple of sculptures while the kids playground was removed. This outrageous misuse of public money really draws attention to the incompetence of
@YarraCouncil
while the children suffer.
@heidimur
Yarra even breached its own consultation policy with the bin tax and are in damage control deflecting, ducking and weaving. Bin Tax was just to surface for this systemic and anti-democratic secrecy while they try to implement their agenda away from public scrutiny. 2/3
Yarra Council is in financial crisis. The solution? Manage your spending and expenses better? Nope. Slug your residents for parking and fines more than ever. Increase parking rates to record highs encouraging people to go elsewhere and making it even... (1/2)
