After a cadetship and a year as a City Reporter for
@theage
, I've decided it's time to explore new opportunities. I'm forever grateful to the many people I've met and interviewed. I will especially cherish amplifying the voices of the western suburbs and everyday Victorians 🩵
The UK deciding to send asylum seekers to Rwanda for offshore processing just shows how insidious practices are passed around like homework notes between western countries. We all saw this coming.
Two Muslim men in hotel quarantine in Melbourne received no food upon breaking their fast. After a non-profit group advocated for them, they received this.
A ham sandwich for fasting Muslims.
12 days left in quarantine for them.
I truly hope this doesn’t happen again.
People policing why Black and Brown folk have an opinion on how Ukraine is being covered. The racist comparative reporting is triggering. Seeing Black Africans being turned away at borders, European countries abandoning anti refugee rhetoric etc this is a lot!!
I reported on
@Tejasvi_Surya
coming to Australia last week. Many in the Aus-Indian community from different faiths opposed his visa, citing he could stir up anti-Muslim sentiment and cause disharmony in the community here.. This video is pretty telling.
Dear
@DFAT
,
This is
@Tejasvi_Surya
, the president of
@BJP4India
, on Australian soil, encouraging violence against Muslims by equating them with Nazis, saying, “The Islamic chapter in India is bloodiest chapter in the history of the world.”
THIS. IS. A. VIOLATION. OF. HIS, VISA!
Ramadan begins this Saturday.
Please do not try to awkwardly avoid eating in front of me. I can assure you, I am not craving whatever left overs from the previous night you’re reheating 🙏🏾
I’ve deleted several tweets about this article. This is pretty awful, nobody deserves to have images of their past that don’t reflect who they are now circulated by a media organisation.
It’s absolutely creepy behaviour toward a Muslim women.
Although the situation has since been rectified and the ham sandwich replaced with culturally appropriate food. Why did it take a non-profit to advocate for these men? They didn’t even listen to them first. Like ffs.
Djokovic came and went from the Park Hotel. Ismail Hussein has been there almost nine years. He watched the immigration minister use his ‘God powers’ to eject a tennis player from the country, then he went back to waiting |
@najsambul
Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo
@M_Farmaajo
, the now former President of Somalia, lost his presidential re-election bid. Farmaajo instilled so much hope in the Somali people and many of us in the diaspora. Thank you for your service.

"It was the most difficult decision I have had to make, and although each step I took across the Senate floor felt like a mile, I know I did not walk alone," she said.
This quote.
@carliebonavia
@Asher_Wolf
What’s worse is they refused when the men asked for food the first time. Hence, why a non-profit had to step in. Fighting for basic things. 😡
Such a good piece.
“I found myself wondering what Markle has done to deserve her spot at the top of the celebrity social justice advocate food chain.” SAME!
And when Markle invoked Mandela’s name. It was embarrassing.
Pies fans on bus 1/5 are about 1 hour away from the SCG. Some have already claimed an early victory over the Swans and a mentally preparing for a Geelong showdown.
Quote of the day from a Pie:
“I want Swans on toast”

For the past 8 months I’ve been co-curating a Somali Art Exhibition, AQAL.
It will open in March (melb) and exhibiting artists are award winning Idil Abdullahi, Muhubo Suleiman and Madaale.
AQAL is the word for a nomadic home in Somali.

Obviously it’s not surprising to see, but telling folk it’s in poor taste to bring up atm? Nah not buying that. We can speak on anything that affects us and our collective humanity.
Quite unimaginable that tonight the Park Hotel is empty and no refugees will be there. Heartbreaking that many refugees will not get the adequate support they need as they transition out of detention. No doubt non-profits and individuals will step up…
As we see Melbourne rapidly change,
it’s important to report on how gentrification affects peoples lives, particularly community groups with limited resources.
New story from myself and
@MillarRoyce
about one such case in North Melbourne.
New from me: Indian-Australian community members, academics and the national students’ union oppose controversial right-wing nationalist Indian politician
@Tejasvi_Surya
coming to Aus for
@AIYouthDialogue
next week.
I spoke to the student who first discovered a video of peers at
#Trinitycollege
in Adelaide, lynching a black baby doll from a tree.
Nyadol Nyuon: “Schools need to take this [racism] seriously.”
@AfricanAU
Bella Hadid’s caption on her recent Instagram post including this sentence: “Every day I wish I could go back in time, to when I was a child, so that I could start fighting for Palestine sooner.”
She really speaks her truth more than any celeb of her age and influence.
In the video he calls for films on Netflix to depict what he’s alluding as a holocaust against Hindus by Muslims? The thing that baffles me is what’s the aim of a far right politician from India to say these things in Australia?
"After being granted bail, Spencer told the magistrate “I know a bit about the law” and said he intended to appeal to the High Court.
Grinberg told Spencer he did not have to appeal as he had been granted bail and adjourned the case."
I’m took my two nephews and niece to the local shopping centre today, after a lot of “pls don’t touch that” and “I’m not buying you Coca Cola”, my nephew on the car ride home says, “does this change your mind about having your own kids?” Lol.
A lot has changed in a year since I wrote this story as a freelancer for The Age, when Novak Djokovic got locked up in immigration detention..
For one, I now work at The Age, but far more importantly Ismail Hussein has his freedom.
Really important and significant reporting. The concerns of African communities with regard to employment bias/ racism has been going on for decades. It’s exhausting.
All strength and power to Sonny Bill Williams and his wife Alana who have been ridiculed by news dot com for practicing their faith. That article was so wrong on many levels.
Pies fans are gearing up for a mammoth road trip. Close to 300 fans will drive up at 1 am (Saturday) to Sydney for Collingwood’s prelim final tomorrow.
Oh, and they’re also planning a 400 strong march to the SCG.
New from me.
The way we speak about religion in this country has become increasingly flawed and reductive. Religion and faith is still a big part of a lot of peoples lives in Australia. There needs to be far more sophistication in how we discuss this.
@fahad_s_ali
@SaraSalehOz
It’s terrifying to see the blatant double standards and hypocrisy. It confirms everything we’ve been knowing for a long time. People don’t care about Black and Brown folk nor the wars that displace us.
My mum and aunties having a conversation in Somali about how Prince William is problematic and “the younger one” is better. 😂 even in Somali, you can’t escape the royals.
@MagazineAmplify
@thejimmalo
It’s not about whether someone is born in Australia or not, it’s about the way in which non-white immigrants are told to stay in the place or get out of Australia, that’s the issue..
At my local, the Footscray Lawn Bowls for the election tonight
where are the atmosphere is being described as “cautiously optimistic” by ALP supporters.
I think it’s actually WACK that people are criticising Prince Harry for going to be with his grandmother. I’m sorry I don’t care if I’m beefing with my entire family, if one of them is dying I’m not thinking twice - I’m there!! Why should Harry be any different?
Malcolm Turnbull tearing up talking about the Queen’s remarkable life, on
@abcnews
channel. He said he got the Queen’s portrait out last night and reflected on her service.
Tonight 7 pm on Spin Cycle
@3RRRFM
, we have ABC journo
@ahmedyussuf10
co-hosting with myself and
@lilleyjuice
. He’ll also talk about reporting on Héritier Lumumba.
Our special guest this week is
@fahad_s_ali
, a Palestinian writer and academic to talk about Shireen Abu Akleh.
Australian Neo-Nazis are not some embarrassing fringe group that mainstream media can jokingly dismiss.
They are vicious, angry and they kill.
@BenjaminMillar
wrote this piece on Christchurch. I couldn’t agree more with his words.
All these influential male black artists dying in their 50s is particularly sad. Coolio, Michael K. Williams, DMX- to name a few. They were all giants in their art. RIP.
My co-curator is Halyna Mykyta, a Ukrainian-Australian woman who has been supporting the Somali community in Melbourne for over a decade.
We have forged strong ties as migrants, and have so much in common. It’s a sad day.

I spoke to Jordy Kerwick, an Australian artist making it big.
His painting recently sold for $400,000 and the
@museoreinasofia
just acquired his work for a permanent display.
Amazing considering 5 years ago he sold paintings for $200 on Instagram!

BREAKING: Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist for the Al Jazeera network, was killed by gunfire in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry says. The shooting happened during an Israeli army raid in Jenin.
I never expected to be on a Collingwood fan bus in my life, let alone for close to 12 hrs straight.
Here’s my final piece about the trip up to Sydney.
Thanks to the Pies fans who told me their stories, say what you will but they make AFL entertaining.
