West Virginia United Students' Union is a union of students and student organizations fighting to consolidate and strategically direct student power at WVU.
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Sources say the World Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics dept. has been recommended for COMPLETE DISSOLUTION and a REDUCTION TO ZERO FACULTY.
In the last 3 years for which we have data, the WLLL dept. has made the university an average of +$871,384 per year!
Last night, associate provost Mark Gavin (paid over $250k per year) said that admin will not be taking reduced salaries because it wouldn't be good to cut anyone's pay. A student yelled out that their current plan was to reduce hundreds of salaries by 100%. The audience cheered.
With the suspension of the Eberly BA language requirement, WVU has once again validated the claims that West Virginia is shut off from the world and culturally backward. West Virginians don't deserve this.
Students, we know this may feel like the end of the road, but it isn't. We have months to go before the cuts and RIFs take effect. In that time, we can continue to fight to reverse what we can. We can lend support to the faculty who have been selected for the RIF.
Administration can't decide if there's a massive budget deficit needing to be addressed, if the university's finances are stable, or if the cuts are in response to financial burden or academic vision.
At the faculty senate meeting, Gee implied that faculty are responsible for the students organizing against him and his transformation. Does he not believe students possess agency? Does he not believe students can think and learn for themselves?
What a guy...
People in power who say the powerless have to stay "civil" 🚩🚩🚩
Let's be real here. There is nothing civil about ripping jobs away from hundreds of people.
"After protestors exited, Willis-Miller firmly told attendees that she did not tell any student to leave and that she 'will not let that misinformation spread.'
Protesters tried to re-enter the room but were physically pushed out by University personnel."
The DA = 🐐 🏆
🚨 Developing 🚨 WVU is not allowing students to put the 2nd of their dual-majors first if that major is *recommended* to be cut.
If you know any student who's been affected by this, send them to us.
WVU's student government has no words for us today about the walkout. Rumor has it that some among them think the issue is "too political."
Do they know what the "G" in "SGA" stands for?
Less than a week out from the BOG vote on the recommended cuts and reductions, some members of the board were seen enjoying a fancy meal at the Blaney House with Gee and his cronies.

WVU instructors, we know some of you are hesitant to cancel classes on the mornings of Thursday and Friday this week. We reached out to Associate Provost Evan Widders, who said their office does not track or take part in class cancelations. Hopefully this helps.
All programs (undergrad and grad) would be discontinued.
If you are a student in the WLLL department, please reach out to the
@WLLLCoalition
about joining to help fight for your department, your educators, and your education.
We stand with the faculty and appreciate all the love and support they've been giving us. We encourage them to do all they feel comfortable doing in order to show support tomorrow during the walkout. Faculty are absolutely welcome to the rallies.
Sorry, but we don't believe a small group of political appointees with obvious private interests should be making decisions for a $1.3 billion-dollar public institution.
Gee's response to the claim that the BOG meetings were placed so early in order to make them inaccessible was to say they've always been held at those times.
Gee, we thank you for bringing to our attention the issue that is the inaccessibility of the BOG meetings!
WVU cut 12 programs and fired 132 faculty and staff members over the summer when they thought no one was watching. Now they're proposing to cut at least an additional 32 programs and fire nearly 200 additional faculty.
Hundreds of families and thousands of students are at risk.
Gee couldn't grow student enrollment by throwing money at building projects. Now he expects us to trust him to grow enrollment by taking money from strong, existing programs and throwing it elsewhere?
Our union is closely monitoring a real-time development of two narratives.
The first is that students do not care. The second is that students are pissed.
Make your guess as to which narrative is propagated by administration and which is propagated by students.
The BOG issues an immediate response: "The Board of Governors unequivocally supports the leadership of President Gee and the strategic repositioning of WVU and rejects the multiple examples of misinformation that informed these resolutions."
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 The administration on the webinar tonight admitted that they don't have answers to some of our questions and have been dodging answering others. They've already resorted to muting students.
They are terrified of us.
We thought Chair Willis-Miller asked us to leave, so we left. When she said she didn't ask us to leave, we returned. When we returned, UPD and security physically removed us from the room.
We want to see a turnout on par with that of the walkout (300+ people). We need students, alumni, parents, Staff, Faculty, and community allies to show up. Every last person counts.
Once we get the times, we will alter this flyer.

Don't forget!
Tomorrow, come out to the Alumni Center @ 1 PM to rally in the BOG's face before their meeting!
Wednesday, come out to

at 530 PM to enjoy a free show (18+) and support our cause!
The administration says it'll direct students affected by the cuts to
@WVU_Carruth
for mental health support. The administration ALSO says Carruth is one of the services they'll review for potential cuts.
Tomorrow is the day we come together and show the administration what solidarity looks like.
Tomorrow is the day WVU's campus culture is forever shifted.
Tomorrow is only the beginning.
They tell us that protesting is unnecessary—"All you have to do is talk to us." When we talk to them, they disregard everything we say and belittle us.
The administration is abusive to the campus community.
If the deficit is real and the reason WLLL needs cut at WVU, why did Gee say WLLL expenses will be put into other places after the department is demolished?

The "teach out" plan for Chinese, French, and Spanish majors has been released. Students wishing to complete these majors only have until December 2024 to do so. This will likely be impossible for most 1st and 2nd year students enrolled in the programs. We will keep you updated.
In one year, WVU would have eliminated 44 programs and over 300 employees if all cuts are approved. Do not let the university's mouthpieces say otherwise.
Our members have reached out to admin and the BOG a number of times and rarely receive responses. Our members have spoken at a BOG meeting and got met with the same, dry talking points the admin sells to the media. They don't care about us.
We'll make them care.
Once again, the wealthy are trying to suppress Appalachians to keep them as obedient workers who will turn them a profit. The struggle at WVU is a piece of the broader appalachian workers' struggle.
1st, it is the grad math program getting discontinued. 2nd, discontinuing the grad program and eliminating math faculty would make the undergrad math experience much worse. Math can be a difficult subject, but shrinking the dept will only make courses more difficult.
@HoppyKercheval
Just ask any undergrad the Math department at wvu is horrible and why the graduation rate is down. There is one particular coordinator in the math department that doesn't even know how to do simple problems let alone teach it to the students. She gets low reviews nuthing is done
WVU spent $0 total at Jones Day ... until Stephanie Taylor was hired by Rob Alsop as General Counsel.
From February 2016 to date, WVU has spent $2,754,452 with Jones Day.

The amount of intimidation the administration levies against faculty, staff, and students is deranged. We are going to work to uncover this, but we'll need all the help we can get.
They're still going to eliminate nearly all faculty and eliminate all programs. This is not the administration giving into our demands. This is the administration trying to cover its ass.
