THAT WHICH SINGS is a punk-rock fairy tale—a dark, visceral YA fantasy rooted in Celtic folklore, ruthless and lovely as the tangle of briar and bloom.
"Uncle. Family trouble. Blood feud. It's old news. Really old news."

Question for men:
My mom, who has been married to my dad for over thirty years, just found out that my dad constantly scans for, assesses, and plans for possible threats
Menfolk, do all of you do this?
No, Cinderella didn't go to the ball for the prince. No, the little mermaid didn't leave the sea for the prince.
But what if they did? Would that be so bad? Is it such a terrible thing to want, to risk everything for love?
Part of the reason my mom was so surprised to learn this is that she does nothing of the sort. She’ll respond to a clear threat, but doesn’t look for them
I wasn’t surprised, which is probably because I do scan for/assess/plan for threats, though not to the extent my dad does
Begging modern authors to realize “evil priest is hateful and sexually repressed and sexist and bigoted and also very very evil” is not an edgy and original character anymore
@AshleyLenz_
I don't think so—not that it *can't* be a result of anxiety, but I think this general male inclination comes from something more instinctual. It's certainly not anxiety for my dad. Being aware of your surroundings is entirely distinct from being anxious about them
It's right to challenge the criticisms leveled at fairy tale princesses for their inaccuracies, but there's more to it than that. Even the false motivations of which they're accused are worth defending
It is good to seek love. It is good to take great risks for greater rewards
Spin the bottle but it’s spin the blade & instead of kissing you hold a dagger to their throat and gaze into their wild, defiant eyes until the tension becomes too great & you must tear yourself away & roam the night, cursing the scent of their skin and the weakness of your heart
What is worth greater risk than love? Why shouldn't you––yes, you––devote yourself to a quest for love? Why, when the opportunity presents itself, shouldn't you take a chance, however perilous, in the hope of winning love? For what better thing do you have to search?
If love––romantic love, anyway––isn't for you, that's all well and good. Best wishes to you, I hope your life is filled with every other love.
But it's for me, God willing, and I will not let anyone tell me it's an unworthy goal. It is mine, it is right, it is good.
Every time I read a Diana Wynne Jones book I remember she was taught by both C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien and for a moment my heart is struck by the combined envy of Hera and Athena gazing at the apple in Aphrodite's hand
CS Lewis' lack of subtlety incorporating Christianity into his work wasn't actually clumsy but an honest portrayal of and glimpse into the time in which he wrote and it's no more unsubtle than the portrayal of Christianity in tales of King Arthur and the like send tweet
"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it" rightfully gets a lot of attention, but can we get some love for "You were only an ass, but I was a traitor."
If I hear one more word from Rachel Zegler about how Snow White is "not dreaming about true love" I am going to lose it
LOVE IS A WORTHY GOAL & SNOW WHITE'S ARC IS ALREADY ABOUT BECOMING A GREAT QUEEN RACHEL FIGHT ME
Masculinity. The word you're looking for is *masculinity*. Not "non-toxic". Just normal, average, everyday masculinity.
I absolutely loathe how guys doing something nice and wholesome and *normal* is so often twisted to suggest toxicity by default. This *is* the default.
in the mood to explore sun-drenched ruins choked with climbing roses of variegated pinks, to climb a spiral staircase that leads to nowhere but an odd shimmer in the air, to be met by a stranger with a sly smile and a terrible, wonderful secret ✨
@xXshink3nXx
Basic instinct, yes, but for men. She's always known that he's aware of his surroundings and that he reacts well to threats, but it's this active level of awareness that came as a surprise to her
"One day people will address *you* with a term of respect!"
Oh no. The horror.
Also I already get called ma'am. It's great. It conveys respect, not implications that I'm a withered crone
Or, and hear me out on this, they just give fans of the series the ending they expect. And if they don’t want to “alienate” people then create an entirely new IP.
This is evil. Pure, simple, unadulterated evil.
AI "women" are not women, and women are not orifices.
"Now you get to swipe left." What wretched, wicked resentment. What wrathful, wounded pride.
God help those who made this, those who use it, and those who are used by it.
One of the great lessons of fairy tales is that you should seek adventure for the sake of adventure, fulfillment for the sake of fulfillment, love for the sake of love
My Roman empire is that article about those monks' beehives on which they'd painted icons and the bees covered everything but the icons in honeycomb and the article was like "but don't worry there's a perfectly natural explanation: the icons vibrate at the Holy Frequency"
So many people speak of winter as a wicked thing, reminding us to hold onto the light, that it will be bright again. And I get it, but there's something precious in winter, in darkness, in rest. I think it's worth remembering that flowers open in light, but seeds open in darkness
Your toddler is beautiful and precious and a living, breathing miracle.
Your toddler is interesting. Your baby who can't even lift his own head is interesting. Your baby kicking in the womb is interesting.
And you should be absolutely enraptured by the wonder of your child.
I finished The Burning God and all I can say is
@kuangrf
, you have my eternal respect and perhaps more importantly my pain, which I assume you drink as an offering to keep you from unleashing ultimate torment on the world
That was simply one of the greatest series I’ve ever read
nice nihilism bro, hope it's not a defense mechanism to keep you in complacent "realism" so you don't have to seize the double-edged sword of hope and fight your way through the darkness to emerge bloody yet victorious on the highest plane of meaning
I will never get over the fact that Joy Davidman snarkily said she was going to England "to seduce C. S. Lewis" and then *married him*
Icon. Legend. Hero.
I am. So tired.
The original Ariel wanted to leave the ocean because of her fascination with humanity. Eric was a bonus
The original little mermaid wanted to leave because her fascination with humanity led to her discovery of and longing for an immortal soul
Halle Bailey says
#TheLittleMermaid
's reasons for wanting to leave the ocean will be more nuanced in the live-action film: "It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants”
Not sure how unpopular it actually is, but I want little stakes!! Forget saving the world and save a city, a village, a family. The world doesn't need to be in danger for the character's world to be in danger
More protagonists should be motivated to do the right thing just because it's the right thing, not because they have any particular personal motivations
I don't mean paragons. Not shiny happy people who always do the right thing. Flawed people who still care about what's right
Do you think Eustace in The Silver Chair was ever like "Oh this is how they all felt dealing with me" when he found himself stuck with Chronic Disaster Jill Pole
Listen. I don't know about people in general, but I will rage against AI-generated "art" until the very end. I will go full Sarah Connor. The machines will have to drag me kicking and screaming to my demise and I will take as many of them with me as I can.
Netflix is officially rebooting ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ with ‘Barbie’ director Greta Gerwig set to write and direct at least two films in the franchise.
“Courage, friends,” came Prince Rilian’s voice. “Whether we live or die Aslan will be our good lord.”
“That’s right, Sir,” said Puddleglum’s voice. “And you must always remember there’s one good thing about being trapped down here: it’ll save funeral expenses.”
Everything I've learned about Taylor Swift and that football guy I've learned against my will, but on the other hand it does seem to confirm that knights would do better in a tournament with a token of their lady's favor. So that's cool.
"Ohhh she's going to delve into the sibling relationships of Narnia!!"
Well that's lovely and all but it's not what Narnia's really about. It's about an entirely different kind of relationship. The sibling relationships are important, but they're not the sort Narnia is built on
@prvserpine
Miette knew you could fold anything into a pastry – butter, secrets, enchantments – but wishes were tricky. They were delicate, far more than the pastry itself, and slippery.
But this one – golden, flaky, iridescent – was worth it. This would change things.
I wonder if flawless characters are boring not because perfection is boring, but because we have a faulty perception of perfection.
The complaint is always about realism. But a truly perfect, truly virtuous person would be truly Real, and what could possibly be more interesting?
Oh, are people wailing about the evils of homeschooling again? That's nice.
I'll just be over here, rewriting a novel with the skills I've been meticulously cultivating over fifteen years because my mom introduced me to creative writing, encouraged me, and allowed me to flourish
Found out there used to be a feminine abbreviation of "Saint" (Ste.) & now I'm working on a post about how I hate the elimination of feminine terms in the name of feminism
Also the feminine version always sounds cooler. I mean, aviatrix? Oratrix? Murderess?
I AM S C R E A M I N G LOOK AT THIS PRECIOUS LITTLE FAE WARRIOR MAY HER ARROWS ALWAYS FLY TRUE MAY HER BOWSTRING ALWAYS BE DRY MAY SHE ALWAYS WIELD HER WEAPON FOR A RIGHTEOUS CAUSE✨
Thinking about that time my amazing medievalist professor explained the concept of the music of the spheres and it was such a beautiful idea it almost sent me into shock
I'm arming the pixies with paperclip swords
It's their only defense against honeybee hordes
And I hope for the best, but they may not survive
Three hundred tiny Spartans versus the hive
This is evil.
Anyone looking at this and thinking they might like to try it, it might be easier, you're just so tired—I'm sorry, I really am, but this is not the cure for loneliness.
This is evil, and it's only going to get worse.

A quick thread on features, and where we go from here (1/13)
Fairy tale question for menfolk:
A princess doesn't want to marry. She dissuades her suitors with an impossible game for her hand & kills the losers. A hero comes, wins, and she becomes his virtuous wife.
What does this trope mean to you?
Not to brag, but my mom says I’d be great at creating a diversion to distract from a crime because I have “no shame” and “a vivid imagination” and am “an incredible liar”
So what I’m saying is of course WHO WANTS TO DO A HEIST??
me when I see basically any depiction of the Virgin Mary:
✨🩵THAT'S HER!! THAT'S MY GIRL!!! I KNOW HER!!!! SHE'S MY GIRL SHE'S MY MOM SHE'S THE BEST AND I LOVE HER!!!!!🩵✨
This is an understandable misinterpretation, but it is still wrong.
Tolkien, we must remember, was a WWI veteran. He was a young, small, scared man who took on a terrible responsibility, along with his friends, and none of them were unaffected by the horrors they experienced.
People tend to miss the fact that Frodo’s journey in The Lord of the Rings is a metaphor for depression. He suffers invisibly, he feels isolated from those closest to him, he loses the ability to enjoy things, he leaves Middle-Earth because he’s too deeply wounded.
People call fairy tales inconsistent, for the mysterious hag could just as easily be a wicked witch as a good fairy.
Really, they are easily told apart: The witch tries to give you something so she may take from you, while the fairy asks something of you so she may give to you.
Shameless self-promotion time!!
For more passionate defenses of fairy tales and their princesses (plus whatever random insane ramblings pop into my head) find me on the Website That Shall Not Be Named by following the link in my bio ✨
Narnia is a story crafted from values & anyone taking the reins of that story must understand those values, respect them, & allow them to take center stage
It's an in-your-face allegory & if you won't tell it with the same blatant love & enthusiasm as Lewis, get outta my way
@ThatRosaryGirl
It just never came up. She's always known that he's situationally aware, it's just that this active level of awareness came as a surprise
absolutely disgusted to report that this "trend" is just about small gestures of affection and not about dates where you go out and find each other cool rocks
Reasons I want to become a lowkey expert on medieval cosmology:
✨To make CS Lewis, George MacDonald, & my favorite professor proud
✨The concept of the music of the spheres is so beautiful it almost made me cry
✨To see how it further influences my space fantasy stories
Do we need to talk about how adaptations of Hans Christian Andersen's work have a tendency to erase his religion from the story?
Because I feel like maybe we need to talk about how adaptations of Hans Christian Andersen's work have a tendency to erase his religion from the story
The little mermaid doesn’t kill herself, & her death has less to do with the prince & more with the machinations of the sea witch
She chooses to spare his life at the expense of her own, an act of selflessness which finally earns her the immortal soul for which she left the sea
Question for men:
My mom, who has been married to my dad for over thirty years, just found out that my dad constantly scans for, assesses, and plans for possible threats
Menfolk, do all of you do this?
Excuse me while my dumb little heart breaks into a thousand pieces over the knowledge that I cannot shrink myself down to wear this for an evening of dancing 'neath the shadow of a great wise oak tree and fall into tragic, doomed love with the King of the Faeries
I saw the trailer for Wish and like…… I know the king is going to turn out to be ridiculously evil, but not granting everybody's wishes is not evil. Not granting *most* wishes is not evil
Most wishes should not be granted. Even most *good* wishes should not simply be granted
It's not about whether AI looks good. It has never been about whether AI looks good.
Art is a labor of love. If the labor is lost, so too is the love.
If you do not love it enough to sacrifice for it, to give your time and effort to it, it is not art.
It's annoying how generative AI defenders say that it's getting better & better at generating "art" and soon it'll be "indistinguishable"... The output is not the sole point! I wouldn't feel moved or connected to AI "art" even if it spat out the whole Sistine Chapel
This is pure foolishness, and an unfortunately common conflation of "appropriate" and "mature". A truly good children's story (and a truly Good anything, really) speaks to all ages.
Hot take: Children's entertainment cannot both appeal to adult sensibilities, while remaining appropriate and entertaining to children. Adults need to seek out adult entertainment instead of demanding that children's entertainment be tailored to them.
The other day I was having a conversation with my dad and I was like "Well in That Hideous Strength—because I'm becoming one of those people who ties everything to That Hideous Strength"
I walked under a stone archway today and I am shocked, disappointed, and deeply offended to announce I did not find myself in a magical parallel universe, soon to be swept away on a noble quest to save a world that is not mine but that I will grow to love with all my heart
To all the people being drawn to AI "art":
Truly, sincerely, without an ounce of mockery—please, please pick up a pencil instead. I promise you, the struggle of learning is worth it. I promise you, the thing you wish to create will be better if you are the one who created it.
Dear Disney,
Maybe don't put people who actively hate the story and have the reading comprehension of oxygen-deprived gerbils in charge of the movie. Just a thought
xoxo
