I genuinely don't know what field to encourage my kids to study. Programming, law, accounting, I keep telling them about career options that were open to me, but a part of me feels sad as I do. Will any white collar paths let a young person add value in a decade?

@JeanPFournier You can think a bit outside the box here, no need to centralize the regulatory state. Outsource regulation to non-profit certification. See the example of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. That's how industrial safety standards have been harmonized in the US.

@elidourado I assume you've read Vollrath's Fully Grown? He says regulation explains only small part of growth decline, blames it on population aging and switch to services. Goldschlag & @ATabarrok's regulations and entrepreneurship paper same. Wonder why you disagree.
