@johnpringdns
“If this isn’t resolved quickly then I cannot survive.”
27-year-old Philippa died by suicide when her disability benefits were cut off. The system can be hard to navigate and complicated. When mistakes are made and the process fails, it can be fatal.

Really pleased to see the coverage for our latest doc - Rebekah Vardy: Jehovah’s Witnesses & Me - highlighting the darker elements of the religion, including failing to protect victims of abuse

People with a learning disability are more than twice as likely to die from an avoidable cause than the rest of the population. A little bit about the people featured in tonight’s

"From the age of 12-years-old I was being abused and instead of being supported, I was blamed."
Rebekah Vardy grew up as a Jehovah's Witness. She shares her experience of how the religious organisation handled her allegations of being sexually abused as a child.

In light of the sentence against PC Oliver Banfield, I’m just re-tweeting one of the stats from the

Exposure we worked on last year...these aren’t one off incidents:
Chloe loved singing. She was part of a drama group and played the Good Witch in the Wizard of Oz. She had visited Australia four times and was extremely popular. She was only 27 when she died. (2/6)

Amazon has thrived during the pandemic, but we found that
#AmazonDoesntDeliver
on its pledge to ban
#zerohour
contracts from its warehouses. Agency staff say they’re left struggling, with shifts cancelled last minute & hundreds of pounds in unpaid wages.
I worked on a doc in 2019 which found that a police officer is sacked or convicted for sexual misconduct every 5 days.
The police’s own inspectorate said it was a problem in both 2017 & 2019. It’s systemic & we need more journalists in those misconduct hearings to report on it.
As companies like Amazon rely more and more on their agency workforce, there needs to be better regulation to protect the rights of these workers. My piece for
@bureaulocal
:
Last week we uncovered how
#AmazonDoesntDeliver
for agency workers on
#zerohours
contracts who were missing hundreds of pounds in unpaid wages.
But why is this happening?
@vjbnoble
explains how regulation of employment agencies has fallen short.
Julie Barrow was a talented knitter and loved to knit baby blankets. She was stylish, collected jewellery and was obsessed with Elton John. She was known as the 'Queen of Florida' on her holidays to America with her parents. (4/6)
Julie Taylor never missed an episode of Coronation Street or Emmerdale. She loved having her hair blow dried and straightened each day. She was the life and soul of the party and enjoyed spending time with her brother and sister-in-law. She had been their bridesmaid. (3/6)
Robert Newmark. Previous restaurants resulted in unpaid workers, employment tribunals and cockroaches in the kitchen of Beach Blanket Babylon (
@HarryTaylr
followed many of these ventures and I wrote about it for
@hackneygazette
back in 2018). Now he's back in Shoreditch?
Robert Bourn loves banter and going out on the motorbike. He also likes football and buses. Thankfully he is still with us after recovering from cancer – but he was first told by clinicians that there was nothing they could do and he would have to go onto end of life care. (5/6)

The most shocking stats from yesterday's LeDeR report on deaths of people with learning disabilities (a thread) - 1. the average age of death for a man with severe learning disabilities from an ethnic minority group is only 33. That's 50!!! years younger than the average.
Uber drivers are now workers - this has huge and potentially exciting implications for the gig economy, particularly those struggling with work/illness during the pandemic.
Today after many months’ delay, the Supreme Court has finally handed down its decision: Uber drivers are workers.
This decision is very significant news for all private hire drivers in the UK.

The Met apologises again. This time its really disturbing behaviour of officers at Charing Cross station where apparently messages about raping colleagues, killing black children + domestic violence were "jokes and banter". One cop known as the "mcrapey raperson". THREAD
For an investigation in 2018, I developed a database of 227 officers in England and Wales who were sacked or convicted for sexually exploiting at least 424 victims (between 2015 and 2018). That was one officer or PSCO every 5 days - and only counted those who were caught.

Hi Ed, I work for the BBC - was just wondering if we could use this clip in our new crime series. Could you follow me back so we can DM about it? Thanks so much.
LeDeR has been reporting on these deaths for six years and there's been little change in the life expectancy gap between those with and without learning disabilities in that time (still around 27 years for women and 23 for men). We need change faster.
