I started my career with app support. Over years unpeeled & learnt deeper layers of software - backend dev (Java/Go), infrastructure (Docker/Puppet/Kubernetes), OS & so on
Last ~9 months been exhilarating - closer to hardware. 800GBPS switches to 22GBPS write speed & of course

Then you unpeel APIs, backend etc.
You can then unpeel DBs, MQs

One of the most underrated things about software industry: you can "practice" without an industrial setup. Just need a Laptop + Internet. OSS is force multiplier!
This luxury is NOT available in many industries.
You can not build a factory at home.
Nor a chemical lab
Skills = Knowledge x Practice
Knowlege can be found in: Blogs, videos, certifications, courses, books
Without practice you won't develop skills.
Optimise for 10-20% learning and 80-90% practice
You can never have enough of knowledge & still reach nowhere without practice 😅

One thinks they know how business works, but one is dealing with abstractions so high that one never really deals with harsh realities
Being in smaller org - very close to customers, problems & harsh realities is powerful

2 things to ♥️ abt India passport office
1) Been 8ish years: consistent experience Fast, efficient & manages scale well. Very unlike other govt offices in India
2) For kids - super fast track. Was done in 22 minutes. Very thoughtful
