@1999Yadwade Can't tell you what to do as I avoid advising anyone since no one can know anyone else's situation fully. What I do is assume good intent, and ignore small things. If things repeat, just move on.

Contrary to public opinion, I think the Indian government getting directly into AI is going to be a huge waste of money and resources. It will end up with a lot of people making a shit ton of money with disproportionate (on the worse side of things) outcomes. Govt should rather focus on how to make it easier for private companies to advance in AI by removing the red tape, and supporting them in connections and getting anything they need. The catch being "anything they need" should not be money, otherwise a lot of companies will just scam the govt (in cahoots with politicians/babus) for the dole outs. It should be things like connecting the companies to the right contacts, making imports/exports easier, removing compliance restrictions, making taxes lesser/easier, making travel easier, getting them access to experts and connecting research at top institutes to industry and more.

@Parikshit_K_ It's a time bomb waiting to blow and a lot of people will get fired when it does. Just like the firings that have happened for people at Apple/Meta/MSFT for lying about reimbursements.

At Google, there are enough people who know and care. When I was at Google, I routinely rejected referrals from ppl where i knew they were sourcing resumes for referring from topmate or even linkedin and asked recruiters to auto reject their referrals in future. Google also collects data on referrals and deprioritises higher fail rates automatically too. There are thieves and corrupt folks becoming rich and successful all the time. Does not mean that everyone should become the same and can't condemn this behaviour. Like I said people are free to optimise for themselves whatever way they feel. I'll keep calling out and rejecting such people nonetheless.

@Parikshit_K_ They can optimise for it. Hiring managers like me see anyone being on topmate as a negative signal and will optimise for leaning towards not hiring them, and actively rejecting anyone on there who is referring people or getting referred by these people.

Not just a game, people now feel they are "entitled" to these fake referrals. This person reached out to me asking for a fake referral for my co and when i refused, went on about a long rant about it and unfollowed. Platforms like topmate, and most of the people on it, promote scams like these even making it monetised and make them feel legitimate.
Originally, referrals were vouches. We were supposed to recommend people we knew and could confidently vouch for. The system is now gamed, and most companies aren't getting enough benefit from it. I believe we'll soon see a return to that original concept, with the term "vouch" replacing "referral," and the process becoming stricter.
