I really enjoyed doing this piece With Klaus himself it was all about subltle acting. Not very sexy from an animators point of view. So, this one was a welcomed change from that.

These shots were initially planned only as test Scenes but ended up in the final movie. You can't imagine my relief!
They were also the very first two dialogue shots I did with Klaus. Except one done prior with Liam Neeson's voice from "Batman begins" (I'll post that one later).

This trailer gives me the impression that the film is a rehash of many that have come before. The all to familiar acting, humor, and overall look feel reminiscent of a dozen other projects. I’m left hoping the full film will offer something more original, but doubtful about that.

These shots were a bit tricky. I always felt that the dialogue was too on the nose here. You basically end up animating almost exactly whatever the lines are instead of the subtext (juice of the shot).

Fun shot of Klaus and Jesper opening up unexpectedly—one of the few times I animated both (though Jesper changed in the final version). In hindsight Jesper might've been more fun, but after reading the script I felt Klaus to be the right choice for me at the time.

Oh my, I remember this one was driving me nuts.
The biggest challenge to me here was to not make it look weird and funny due to his tiny legs. There’s a ton of cheating going on there, because he actually has no knees 🤪

This is crazy to me, but I never knew they used THIS much life action references for Ariel.
I think life ref has its place for very complex tasks, but when I see it being used for almost every single shot I just don’t see the point of calling it animation anymore.

After this one, I gave up on CG. Although I was able to make this guy walk, the process itself was lacking any sense of spontaneity or surprise that I was getting from 2D. I guess nowadays things have changed quite a bit.

James Baxter, the king of animation. In this type of 2D animation, there is no “camera” like in 3D animation, just pencil drawings on paper. This means drawing the character to change perspective as the environment is spinning to give the illusion of a camera movement.
