Which great American writers, living or dead, would you nominate to write the dark, tragic farce of half the USA voting for the person whose stupidity and egomania would make them lethally sick? Twain? Mencken? Surely Nathanael West.
“Women are actually actively avoiding misogynistic partners. That misogyny, that gender inequity, that antagonism is actually a key driver for why many women actively choose to remain single.”
@DisabilityStor1
It's ridiculous. I remember when it was required, way before the pandemic. In 2007, I went to visit someone going through chemo who was in the hospital for low white blood cell count, and they made sure that I wore a mask before entering her room.
@The_Acumen
And we weren't supposed to say anything then because he was still in the first 100 days of his presidency. Then we couldn't say anything because of the midterms and now we can't say anything because it's a presidential election year. 🙄
@KendraWrites
I remember early in the pandemic when they were surprised that more people in African countries weren't dying. They sounded just like this.
@eveewing
I am not in the mood to have "conversations about race" with non-Black people whose understanding of Black history, leadership, struggle, and resistance comes from an elementary school bulletin board or a bumper sticker or a meme or a public service announcement from 30 years ago
@johnniejae
Thank you for this thread. Every time I hear Lagerfeld's name, I immediately think of what he said about not wanting anyone who wears a double digit dress size wearing his clothes
@brokeymcpoverty
“Look, we all have the right to protest, but that doesn’t mean you can just rush in and destroy any business without gathering a group of clandestine investors to purchase it at a severely reduced price and slowly bleed it to death”
I RTed someone who said this before, and am saying this again in light of recent events + my latest project:
If you follow creatives of color on here and only RT their tweets decrying racism but never the ones in which they promote their work, ask yourself why that is.
@offbeatorbit
I was 22 like Aaliyah. It felt so unfair for her life to be cut short like that when she had finally escaped R. Kelly. What a sad summer that turned out to be.
@awkward_duck
When I was 27, I went back to school to study art. I had tried being practical, but nothing worked out. Some people didn't understand, but it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I wrote about it more in depth on my blog.
"A lot of artists die when they're 27, but for me, that was the age when I got my life back. That was when I decided to become an artist."
More on my blog:
@chick_in_kiev
I used to do it all the time until I got a backhanded compliment from a woman who said, "I could never do that. I don't look good in cheap clothes."
@salesses
@nowhitenonsense
This is why in my YA novel I made it a point to mention that my main characters, who are Black, found each other's dark brown eyes attractive.
@docrocktex26
"Let him have one good day" is the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, not a valid reason to silence legitimate protests against an illegitimate president.
"There were never climate change deniers. There were climate change exploiters. One can question whether the motive behind environmental collapse is theocratic or kleptocratic, but there is no denying it is man-made."
"Dictatorships murder poets because poets convey the feeling of a people. They heed Zora Neale Hurston’s warning to document your pain. They are the ultimate witnesses, and as such, are priority targets."

My mom's inspiration for becoming a guidance counselor was having a racist one tell her and my grandmother that she shouldn't go to college but would make a "nice little secretary" someday. She definitely proved that counselor wrong!
@rahellNO
Seriously! I'm up at the crack of dawn to pick up the groceries I ordered so that I'm prepared to hunker down at home. Not to prepare for a blizzard, but for an election!
@mahaliahayana
You're making a good point. I remember feeling underwhelmed by Good Hair because not long before seeing it, I had just read Lori L. Tharp's far superior book, Hair Story, and wished she'd gotten to make a documentary about Black women's hair instead.
I saw the long, long line at a polling place in Mississippi and thought that if my grandparents hadn't come up north, I might be right there in line with them. We descendants of the Great Migration should not forget our roots or get smug at times like this.
@naima
I was so mad they made time to write this long post, but didn't post anything about Sonya Massey. What's worse, that post was published the same day the bodycam footage was released!
@offbeatorbit
These are the same people who will say not to critique her during the first 100 days of her presidency, and after that, it's too close to the midterms, and after that, it's too close to the next election! So there's never any progress 🙄
"I fear that Americans will accept transnational crime masquerading as government as the natural order of things — instead of following the most reliable road in America, the money trail."

So when I saw this article and saw the photos of the kitchen, I was immediately reminded of Amina Mucciolo's kitchen. (Which is a better execution of this concept, btw)
@Charlotte_Stein
Thanks for saying this. I refuse to watch You and don't plan to see this film, either. I ended up feeling the same way about Dexter and Breaking Bad. I'm so tired of these kinds of men being portrayed as fascinating antiheroes.

And then they have the nerve to email me about a new show that I might like! Why bother when they're just going to cancel it anyway?
@surlybassey
I appreciate you saying this! When storytelling was the new buzzword, I briefly thought it meant that corporate America might appreciate all the creative writing classes I took, but as always, I was wrong about them.
@DocDre
Thanks for mentioning his thread. What he said about staying here is very inspiring. When I mentioned Black Twitter in my latest blog post, I attributed its success in this format to our call and response tradition.
@DelilahSDawson
After reading from the first 2 chapters of my book, someone asked me how the book ends. When I didn't tell her, she got mad and stormed out.
@rianphin
The older I get, the easier this is for me to do because I care less about mindlessly chasing trends and have come to view my wardrobe as a collection.
@DavidCMaybury
I was thinking the same thing! I've been a contestant on a few game shows (including Jeopardy)and they definitely could have edited! Especially considering that they tape a week of shows in a day.
@EpiEllie
I will never forget this article by an economist from March 2020:
"Even the simplest cost-benefit analysis suggests that the US government should be willing to spend up to $65 trillion and lock down the country to avoid extra deaths."
@AngryBlackLady
@thewayoftheid
This does not surprise me at all. He spoke at my university in 2001 and when we protested he was livid and hateful and called us fascists. He said we were crack babies of welfare mothers who only got in because of affirmative action.
"There are some things people can never take from you, no matter how much power they have. Your conscience, your compassion. These cannot be stolen, only surrendered."
We have adopted the language of “war” on the coronavirus so we can dub essential workers as “heroes” for their “sacrifice.”
Here’s why it is a convenient lie.
@D0MXNXQUE
I can see that. Because I have a father who respects, appreciates, and cooks for my mom, I think I do have higher standards. Meanwhile I see guys on here demanding women fix them a plate... lol
The question I've been meaning to ask is what ever happened to waiting for the stores that carry good quality clothes to have a clearance sale? That's a tried and true strategy from the time before fast fashion came along.
The fact of the matter is: overconsumption of fast fashion is contributing to ruining both the planet and the quality of life for millions. And everyone has the option to not overconsume. It's that simple.
@faaaaadumo
@AngelaNissel
Ugh. He sounds like the worst math teacher I ever had. His exact words were "nobody cares how hard you try. All they care about are results." I wish I'd told him nobody cares about pre-calculus if you're not a STEM major.
@myrabatchelder
Thank you for mentioning public transit. I feel like not enough prominent people talked about it after the mask mandate was dropped. They were so focused on planes.
Let me make this clear:
I never expected other people to pay my student loans for me, but when I signed up for them I did expect that when I graduated someone would hire me to use the skills I borrowed the money to learn and pay me a living wage so I could pay them back.

At this point, I feel like the federal government owes every single American reparations for its mishandling of the pandemic. People have lost their lives, their livelihoods, their money and their minds. $1200 is not enough. Put some more zeroes behind it.
I think they should give everyone way more than $1000 or $2000 a month. It's not just lost wages. It's emotional distress and pain and suffering. It's like a class action lawsuit settlement.
