When I was 13, a very good friend of mine was run over by a Suburban. The driver waved him and his friends across, miscounted, then ran him over. She couldn’t see and thought he was a curb.
He was 15. The driver and the friends all had extensive mental health issues for years.
When we had our third child I bought a Yukon. It’s very safe and built like a tank.
We always had sedans and crossovers which have no chance against large trucks.
The lives of my children are too important to risk to another driver.

I went to grad school for public policy, and if I had to sum up American policy, it would be that we rather spend double the money making sure "undeserving" people don't get any benefit from the government than just solving the actual problem. We waste BILLIONS this way.
How much has closing these two encampments cost the city? MAK says hundreds of hours of staff time and likely in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This happened in 1997, so these cars were new and people didn’t really know what their blindspot was. The woman who hit him had her kid in the car, did first aid and CPR in him and had to spend some time in a mental facility. Her kid had trauma and his friends also had trauma.
