@SarahisCensored I agree, do you think they should also be allowed to exempt the % of their home considered classroom space from property tax?

@Mangalawyer This is the video game version of saving the preachy bits for the 6th episode. Get the audience invested. Then club them with the thing they love.

@meltheatist @anielizarmly It’s a winnable war, this nation has just been busily doing nothing for my whole lifetime.

It’s not hard. I do the exact same as should any parent. And no, it isn’t inconvenient. But it’s not about inconvenience. Firstly, again, those precautions are quickly becoming not enough, how inconvenient does it need to be before you accept that approach isn’t working? Will it be when a passerby can snap a video of your family while out at the park, load it into an AI and churn out filth (and you can do nothing about it because we aren’t merciless to predators)? Secondly, you shouldn’t have to do those things. To use your dark alley analogy, we should advocate for a society where we can walk down a dark alley, while also recognizing that in the right-now, it would be unsafe to do so.

Im against kids having social media, But the argument is largely that people can’t take family photos anywhere anymore for fear of them being misused. No christmas cards, no family gatherings, etc. It’s not the dark alley comparison I take issue with, it’s the shoplifting in big cities comparison. Stores bent over backwards to protect their merchandise, from hiding it to locking it down, and it didn’t do anything to stem the tide because the societal incentives were misaligned. Eventually they just closed the worst afflicted locations. That’s not an option for families in the digital age. Sure, you could theoretically move to a place without internet, but those are shrinking faster than ever with the rise of technology like StarLink, and they have their own issues like reduced prosperity and quality of life. When the only options are to a) accept your child’s image will be misused, b) move to bumfuck nowhere and still maybe be victimized, or c) be merciless to perpetrators, I choose c every time. Feel free to choose differently, it’s a free country after all.

I’m well aware of why April. Their consent means nothing to a predator. There will come a day when an afternoon out at the park will be surreptitiously recorded without knowledge or consent. There will come an AI capable of mimicking their features nearly perfectly with that footage alone. Do all you can, but all you can do goes further than your daily life habits. As a parent you have to pressure your society at large to be a place where children are safe. That is my point.

I never said plaster your child all over the web, Absolutely do what you can, it’s your job as a parent. But it’s not a solution. Sure, it helps reduce your risk profile, but you’re altering societal norms to accommodate criminals. We’re rushing into an era where you literally cannot keep your child off the internet no matter what you do. If you bring them in public, they can be surreptitiously recorded without your knowledge. In a few years, that short clip of footage taken without your knowledge or consent will be plenty for an AI to replicate them. Protect your kids, but don’t fool yourself that you never once postĂng their image online is bulletproof. There was a phrase when I was growing up and a careful family’s kid was snatched despite their precautions. “But, they did everything right…”

@TimcastNews Nah, just cut the funding. Independent media will still be there when the nation is back in the black
