Another benefit of fine grained urbanism vs. block-sized mega buildings: If there is a viral pandemic, in the smaller scale fewer people share entrances, while mega-buildings have HUNDREDS of people sharing the same entrance and the same hallways.

I know who needs to hear this, but Art Deco is not a Modernist style. It is modern (of course), but it is not Modernist, not in the slightest. Modernism by definition rejects traditions. Art Deco embraces them.

We designed this new house in Charleston. 11 neighbors supported it, including the neighborhood association which supported it unanimously "with praises." Everybody asked that it "fit in" with the neighborhood. The only opposition came from the Preservation Society of Charleston.

We designed this addition to a listed house built in the 1740s. To get the owner preservation tax credits, it had to be approved by the State Historic Preservation Officer, and it was. The only opposition was from the Preservation Society of Charleston.

The end grain of wood wicks water much faster than other faces. That's why boards used for exterior sheathing are normally installed horizontally. Traditional architectural detailing isn't arbitrary. It represents centuries of tried-and-true knowledge.

We were hired to make this room more architecturally interesting. It started life as a plain sheetrock box. New mantel, new panelling, new trim, new coffered ceiling, new arched opening with French doors on the second floor.

Today we give out Masters degrees in Urbanism, yet despite the huge demand, not one and I mean not a single one has managed to create a place like this. Instead they administer to anti-urban codes and actively fight the creation of places like this, using your taxes to do so.

In the middle of the city you will find a convent, the heart of the city, and the Munsterkirk, which celebrates their 800th anniversary in 2020. Here is Wim Luinge's fantastic reconstruction of how it would have looked in 1775, when the city was formally Austrian.

Roman concrete buildings are held up by gravity. Brutalist concrete buildings are held up by the steel reinforcement rotting behind a few inches of damp concrete. At much cost it can be slowed but not stopped. We've known this about reinforced concrete for multiple generations.
