Criticism is fine. Expected. But some human empathy or goodwill between party leaders - as one leaves - would help to detoxify our politics. Especially given the vicious abuse Leo Varadkar and his partner have suffered.

This whole concocted controversy simply reflects the fact that we have a reasonably efficient stable administration: a minor discrepancy is elevated to ‘mired in scandal’ because the media and opposition struggle to get traction. It’s a nothingburger

🤯You couldn’t make it up! The 3 men leading govt spent 2 months talking, only to produce a package that completely ignores extortionate housing costs. Nothing for ripped-off renters. Nothing for hard pressed mortgage holders. We need a govt with ambition to fix housing.

NEW: Denis O'Brien attended an RTÉ-organised retirement event for Tommie Gorman which was also attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Mr O'Brien’s attendance at the event is understood to have caused disquiet among some staff who were on the Zoom call.

The lesson is this: In the eyes of the current leadership of @FineGael protests by a certain class of people are tolerable, but protests by another class of people are “criminal”. It’s not a question of the legitimacy of protest, it’s a question of who’s protesting.

There are many reasons for the local election results but one of them is that people are by and large happy and contented. Housing is a problem, but the economy is thriving, there is full employment; Sinn Fein's message of discontent and dysfunction simply isn't landing.
