Speaking of radical plans. At Oxford Econ Dept, we've just decided that we'd be using @coreeconteam to teach around half of the topics in first-year economics from next October. That's right. PPE, Econ & Mgt, and Hist & Econ freshers of 2019 will be our first CORE cohort!!!

A striking paper by a @MertonCollege mathematician-economist team: . Almost every large (in # players) game that has a Nash, has a simple best-response path from every non-equilibrium profile to a Nash. This is wild! 🤯🧐😲 @ecmaEditors , take note.

😊 I was briefly an undergrad RA for Tarek Hassan on his project with @DAcemogluMIT . It was, like David says: crap work and I loved it. I got to digitise the Soviet censuses, cell by cell, ~100,000 entries. I hope I wasn't too sloppy! This was their paper:

Economists do NOT "put a price on nature". The "price" revealed by how we consume something. It's society, our collective actions, that "puts a price" on nature. Economists just help point out just how ridiculously low this price is given how scarce natural ecosystems are.

Like @GeorgeMonbiot & others, I'm wary of economists trying to 'put a price on nature'. But I was surprised to see the #DasguptaReview make a strong case for actually *putting large parts of the biosphere off-limits to the market*. Short thread to explain:

Something like Trellick Tower in London, built in 1972 and designed by Ernő Goldfinger, is often held up as an example of Brutalism. That is true in some sense, but as you can tell from the other buildings shared here, Trellick Tower represents its most watered-down form.

To infer causality, the paper exploits a natural experiment based on the expulsion of fellows following the English Civil War and uses an instrumental variable design that predicts students’ choice of college based on their home regions. (8/12)

Absolutely fascinating paper about how #ChatGPT reproduces human-like judgement biases (e.g., Kahneman & Tversky's "Linda the Bank Teller" conjunction fallacy) by my two brilliant colleagues at @St_Catz . 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇.

With @vinnylarouge1 found human-like judgment mistakes to increase in GPT-4, even as it also got better at human-like correct judgments. Perhaps no surprise, since GPT is learning from human text. Humans in humans out?

@AlexZevelev It means that if you start at any profile and myopically follow best responses you will eventually reach a Nash (generically you will never even revisit a profile) in a large enough game. In particular, you don't need to be smart about learning dynamics; the simplest thing works!

This is the paper. If they are right, this is maybe the most important paper in climate change and energy economics in a long time. And I really hope they are right. Of course, if everyone believes they are right & acts accordingly, they will be right...

Finally! As Ravi showed cadet-branch matching can be viewed as a version of Kelso and Crawford's (1982) "job market with salaries" (where "salaries" are actually years of service): . Anyway, Deferred Acceptance strikes again!

@seema_econ I think if you get asked by Brit, don't even say you're "willing to do it". They will assume that your main joy in life comes from tenure letters/university committees.
