GROUNDED SWIFT THREAD! MYTHS BUSTED! 😃
People believe that swifts can not take off from the ground, they do find this difficult but a healthy bird should be able to, under no circumstance should they be thrown up into the air 📸 Alison Ingram 1/4
SUCCESS!! 🥳
After advice from the Police, Cuan, the Pest Control operatives and pressure from the wonderfully kind paramedic team, the Swallows are SAFE for the rest of the season.
They will be making changes over winter, but no lives will be lost here today!!
What to do if you find a grounded swift: ✅
DON’T THROW IT IN THE AIR, DON’T FEED IT AND DON’T DELAY!
If you find any swift PLEASE CONTACT A SWIFT CARER:
Or contact swift sos, for help and advice on finding a swift:
🕷 🐛 Please do not feed the bird at all no matter how much it begs. Grounded swifts are generally dehydrated and emaciated and can die if they are fed in this condition. Under no circumstances must you feed meat, mealworms or seed. A swift is an entirely insectivorous bird. ❌
URGENT 🚨 At 10 am tomorrow, Pest Control contractors will be at Shrewsbury Ambulance Station to remove nesting Swallows. WMAS have taken no professional advice. Somehow (???) this barbaric act is being done under a license from Natural England 1/2
Place the swift in a deep plastic container, or a shoe box, with a folded tea towel and make sure it is well ventilated. & wait for a swift carer to help
2️⃣ REHYDRATE carefully by placing a damp cotton wool bud to the side of the swift's beak. Take care to avoid the nostrils and don’t try to open the beak.. as it breaks easily. ✅
DONT drop water directly in mouth ‼️
NEVER 'throw or launch' a grounded swift in the air. ❌ ✋
a swift on the ground is usually a swift that needs specialist help. Never release a bird without consulting a specialist carer/rehabber. But healthy swifts can take off from a palm of a flat hand!
Did you know? YOU can create a home for a

Install a swift nest box, or even better a nest brick, to save a species that’s declining 🐦💙
🎶 Don’t forget to play swift calls to attract swifts to the nestboxes
📸
@BirdingDad
& Robert booth
As a first aid measure. take a cotton wool bud and soak it in water. Try to squeeze a small amount of water into the side of its beak to help rehydrate it ✅
Please do not put a swift in a cage. A grounded swift is unable to fly and a cage will irreparably damage its feathers ❌
I know of lots of times when the bird has been thrown and dropped straight back to the ground and had the most awful painful death or the swift had to be put to sleep.
1️⃣ Bring the swift indoors. House it in a deep plastic container or a ventilated cardboard box or shoebox, lined with a folded tea towel or tissue. Keep the swift in a quiet room. ✅ (the bird will not fly)
‼️NEVER try and take care of a swift yourself. Swifts need specialist diet and supplements. They also sometimes require force feeding and their beaks can be damaged easily.
Without the right diet they can also have feather issues and can be in a bad state. find your local carer
NEVER RELEASE FROM HEIGHT. ❌ 🪟
Eg. From a Window, It’s likely that the grounded swift is too weak or cannot fly, and this can injure it more and can be fatal
At 10 am tomorrow, Pest Control contractors will be at Shrewsbury Ambulance Station to remove nesting Swallows. WMAS have taken no professional advice. Some
People who can, are intending to be outside the ambulance station from 8am.

They said they are putting nestboxes up- SWALLOWS DO NOT NEST IN NESTBOXES!!
This nest site has been active for 7 years.
A simple solution is to install boards under the nest sites to catch the droppings.
AND wait for the young to fledge.

UPDATE: however the Wildlife Crime Officer and the local paramedics are pushing for them to wait and allow them to stay for the rest of the season. If this cannot be achieved, any chicks will go to Cuan Wildlife Rescue. 2/2

The Wildlife Crime Officer was also very supportive, as are the paramedics who love their Swallows. The license allows the pest control operatives to cull all of the birds and destroy the nests, however this didn’t happen THANKS TO THEM👏
UPDATE: 1/2
There is a meeting underway. The Wildlife Crime Officer is very supportive, as are the paramedics who love their Swallows. The decision has been made higher up. The license allows the pest control operatives to cull all of the birds and destroy the nests,
Please if you find a grounded swift and it’s Healthy hold them in the the palm of your hands at a flat open area (do not throw in air) if thrown or launched this can cause injuries, also do not throw or hold swifts out of window. If the swift is ready it will fly off. If not 2/4

In just 20 years, more than half of our swifts have vanished and we believe that the loss of nest sites in the roofs (cracks) of buildings is at least partly responsible. 1/10
@michaelgove
. There are at least 110,000 UK citizens who will never forgive you if you allow swifts to become extinct on your watch. Their future was in your hands...
'...then
@michaelgove
went silent & has refused to engage since. Now the future of this iconic species rests in one man’s hands. His hands. And I fear he is willing to let them go. It is unforgivable. After all his work, will this sordid chapter be his legacy?' -

The months of dedication, love and care our rehabbers give to get these precious swifts back into the wild is incredible. Thank you, all of you.
As I release precious, abandoned swift chick Bob, I can't help but wonder at the enormity of these few seconds, and the magnitude of his journey ahead.
From a small dark box - to our atmosphere..

Incorrect advice… many swifts that are on the ground are in fact injured, exhausted or young swifts that will not fly, always consult with a swift carer before attempting to release.. and healthy adult swifts can take off from the ground. Carer List here:
Introducing: Mart the Swift 😍
He's just landed back in the UK.
Over the years, Mart has raised 18 chicks, endured heavy rain, heatwaves, multiple takeover attempts & a visit from a curious bat.
This year, we've popped a shiny new camera into his swift box 👇

Highlights the need for vigilance, surveying and action.

Also never release swifts on high walls, this is super dangerous for them, when swifts are ready they would take off themselves, from the palm of a hand at a flat and open area
A very sad day yesterday “my birds” have gone, left within 30 seconds of each other to begin their remarkable and epic journey , taking an almost identical flight path directly south. Safe journey you beauties & see you soon 🤞

The housing development will have around a 100 S-Bricks grouped high up on gables, the gables are grouped together too. The locations are selected where there is a clear line of flight for Swifts to access/egress the S-Bricks.
Here are the first ones going in

Shrewsbury Ambulance Station, they nest in the garage. Natural England have authorized a license to remove/cull due to risk of contamination. Which, we are informed, is minimal!! Thankfully the young will be taken to a rescue- discussions still ongoing

Hi Robert. You're a well respected and brilliant wildlife champion.
The Swift care community are desperate to put an end to the outdated & dangerous practice of throwing swifts. Is there any chance you could consider removing the tweet so as not to encourage others to emulate.
The all important 'Mandate Swift Bricks' debate can be watched here 4.30pm Monday 10th July.

This is why we never release swifts from height! Most swifts are dehydrated and weak. Never release them from height as they can fall and injure themselves more!
@swifts_uk
I found once a poor thing, I let it fly from the second floor, but it did not help, it just landed down, so I took it to a vet, he found it dehydrated and upon parasites. Hopefully, they helped.
What a thread. A heartfelt plea for swift bricks by rehabber
@ChetCunago

Swift rehabbers witness at first hand, the results of blocked nests. As
@WriterHannahBT
said. We need year round nest protection for our nest faithful swifts
Swift rehabber
@ChetCunago
in her 3rd season of caring for swifts gravely injured due to trying to get in to their blocked homes. With no protection of nesting habitat all year round site loyal swifts are making EPIC migrations only to die on arrival. The govt needs to help them
@Kate_Bradbury
The second wave of younger swifts have arrived, third wave due July. The lack of swifts each year is worrying. we need to PRESERVE natural nest sites and ADD more nest boxes!
Great to see swifts so well represented by champions

So important to survey and record Swift nests.

Why not pop out around 8.45pm walk your street and if you see it log a Swift nest.

Why not check out your neighbourhood and submit nest site locations to the Derbyshire Swift Survey?
Swift Awareness Week begins this month, and to mark the event, my local Swift action group will be spending the day at my colony on the 30th June. If anyone wants to come along and talk all things Swifts, in the company of Swifts, just let me know.
