I’m happy to announce the official launch of Hawkstone Bloodstock, my new pedigree blog! My introductory post drops at the top of the hour - subscribe now for free to get it delivered straight to your inbox, and stay tuned for new content every Monday!
I'm not very comfortable talking about my struggles with mental illness, but felt the need to open up about my experience in the racing office at Laurel Park and how I've realized I need to redefine my relationship with horse racing.
In January of 2021, a good internet friend asked if he could fly to MD to take me on a date. I agreed - it would be fun to meet and chill in person - but warned him not to expect too much. Last year, I moved to TX with him. This week, I said yes to marrying my best friend 🥰
omg went into the little local used book store and it turns out they’re going out of business (someone bought the property) and everything is 50% off, so I asked if the decor was for sale too and pointed to this on the wall and the owner said he’d just give me it
Progress!!! There’s probably about a 60lbs difference between these two pictures. Down 25lbs from just the beginning of this year. Another 15 and I will no longer be considered overweight. Self-confidence is still very much a work in progress but seeing this feels good 🔥
I didn't mention anything about it online before now because it just didn't seem real to me, but today was my first day working in the racing office at Laurel Park 😁 I still can't quite believe I'm finally following the only career path I've pursued since I was 11
This is the kind of horse who deserves a stud career in Kentucky. Don't forget he was a stakes winner at two, free of Northern Dancer through six generations (and being from the female family of Into Mischief, should love that line), whole pedigree is loaded with huge families
Anyone else think about Spicer Cub on a surprisingly regular basis? To this day I think this is the wildest thing I have ever seen happen on a racetrack, made all the more memorable by
@DaveRodman
’s brilliant call.
Sucks to not be going to the Charles Town Classic but since I already got dressed up I figured I’d continue with my attempt at a self-confidence arc and post a selfie lol
In case you’re doubting what the casual fan thinks of the narrative around this year’s Kentucky Derby, I’m at dinner with my boyfriend’s family and the only thing they’ve asked about is the dead horses at Churchill. Impossible to defend this sport sometimes.
@KentuckyDerby
@PreaknessStakes
winner I’LL HAVE ANOTHER may not have set the world on fire as a stallion, but I can’t ever recall seeing a stallion match his ability to sire horses that make it to the races. Of his 407 named foals ages 4 & up, 399 started - A REMARKABLE 98%!!!
Laoban’s death was heartbreaking at the time, but finding this out is enraging. It’s a disgrace that the industry operates in a way where, after 126 mares, a stallion not breeding for two days is enough to warrant giving him a libido shot of expired vitamins instead of a break
@racing_dudes
How do you figure? Is it the jockey riding at low-level tracks showing his skills with a master-class ride? Is the the trainer who lost over two dozen horses in a barn fire choosing not to push his horse for Derby points and getting in on luck? This is the best story in years
I’m so excited to be joining the team at Little Blue Bird Stables! I’m looking forward to helping provide content and pedigree insight for LBBS and our partners
You know her as
@starryday93
, but we know her as LBBS Partner AND our very FIRST hire! We're delighted and excited to add Jessica Tugwell to the LBBS team as Content Manager. Her enthusiasm for horse racing will undoubtedly help achieve our lofty goals in 2023. Welcome, Jess!
How does Blame stand for only $25,000? He gets over 70% winners and 8% stakes winners, and is becoming a breakout broodmare sire (10% SWs from his daughters). $25k is a bargain for that kind of consistent quality.
Wow, I’m absolutely blown away by the response to my blog post. Thank you all so much for the kind words and support. I’m touched that so many people see themselves in my experience and I hope that we can all keep on supporting each other through this crazy thing they call life😊
Every year, my uncle gives me a horse racing related gift for Christmas. This year, he asked who my favorite racehorse was and got this customized for me 🥰
I’ve never looked forward to the Breeders Cup less in my life, and it’s really discouraging. Between not having much attachment to any of the horses running and being terrified that any mishap could be disastrous, I kind of just want to be past it.
Any chance the Laoban story has enough weight to convince big farms (and, by extension, Kentucky legislators) that a mare cap is in the best interests of the Thoroughbred industry?
@cannonshell
@caCHRB
$5,000 for an extra strike with the whip but $1,500 for a second drug overage in six months? 🧐 I think enforcing the whip rule is just dandy, but the fine scale compared to infractions that markedly influence safety is crazy
Mom told the dog that he wasn’t allowed downstairs because he doesn’t know how to be downstairs without getting into mischief and Jordan looks at me and says “Into Mischief?”
I’ve never been so proud of my fiancé 🥹
Runnin'toluvya has been known to act up in the paddock, so trainer Timothy Grams rode into the paddock after the others left to hold him from horseback for saddling. Overall, things went pretty well, and the son of Fiber Sonde went on to win the Frank Gall Memorial impressively.
Feeling overwhelmed and hopeless about pretty much everything, but I started a new antidepressant yesterday, I've been running a mile almost daily for a month, and I had 3 job interviews this week, so I'm hoping maybe I'll like myself at least a little more in a month or so.
You know what would be better than a Triple Crown winner? Horses racing past age 3 or 4. Having fans who only tune in a few times a year consistently seeing the same names, even if in different races, and realizing that there are other days when they can see those horses run
@TomRyanKY
@BelmontStakes
If we have more triple crown winners everyone from the racetracks, to the breeders, to the fans wins. The marketing side alone is huge. Think about how many more people show up to see a triple crown winner. Not to mention the merchandising side of this. We will create more fans.
I’m very excited for my next video, where I discuss inbreeding in the Thoroughbred, but man if y’all don’t watch it I’m going to be very sad because I have put a lot of work into this outline and it’s going to be a monster to edit with all the visuals I’m making lol
Probably won’t hear much from me for a while. Deleting Twitter/FB off my phone. I know that the pain I’m feeling is nothing compared to what other people go through, but I can’t handle all this violence and hatred. I’m sorry for being weak
Really hope he gets a chance as a stallion, this is the kind of horse who could bring plenty of durability along with a bit of diversity to the table. Some really interesting uncommon names on the bottom
@duolingo
I really liked the branched learning, as it allowed you to switch between topics. Forcing a linear path is really frustrating (especially as it seems to be on subjects I’ve already covered)
Holy wow! That was some debut from

Crimson Light! Keep a close eye on the one out of the gate and it'll be awhile before you see him again after that! Unflappable ride by

Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday! 💚 Turning 30 is something I’m proud of, because I spent over half of my life quietly convinced it wasn’t going to happen. I’m so grateful that I kept choosing to prove myself wrong, and nowadays I look forward to my future
American Pharoah’s Travers and Zenyatta’s 2010 Classic are two races where a horse earned a lot of my respect in defeat. What are some other losing efforts that stand out in your mind as being more impressive than most wins by the same horse?
I’m so glad people in the racing industry are talking about the job security aspect of the current state of affairs. Finding a new career path at 30 is way different than doing it at 50, something people my age working in the industry have to weigh into their choices.
@mattyglesias
Good therapists also teach that you are not responsible for anyone else’s emotions and nobody else is responsible for your emotions, but I see the opposite message all over the place nowadays, encouraging people to conflate hurt feelings with harm instead of owning their emotions
With McPeek getting a filly like Thorpedo Anna, hard not to think about Swiss Skydiver and wonder if we might see this one against the boys at some point
Just realized that the first horse I ever advised a mating on has surpassed $100k in earnings! 🥹 The goal was to find a mare to breed to Uptowncharlybrown and get a foal who runs, wins, and earns breeder rewards, so I’d definitely call that a success!
Thorpedo Anna will certainly be easy to write about for Monday! An absolutely brilliant mating. Can’t wait to talk about it because this is absolutely my kind of pedigree - value sire, massive female family, linebreeding to the tail-female line, and linebreeding to Rough Shod
If there’s anything in life that can make you feel old very quickly, it’s horse racing. They just referred to Orb’s Kentucky Derby as being “way back in the day” 😭😂
I know y'all are probably sick of my self-promotion, but thankfully this is the last major video I did for the BC, covering the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, so it'd mean a lot if you could give it a watch and a like for me!
Can we petition to get Prof. McGonagall sent to Medaglia d'Oro in order to name the baby Dumble d'Oro? Because nobody has used that name yet and I think it'd be great
@paulickreport
Heartbreaking, terrible article to read but excellent and crucial reporting here, thank you for not just letting this story fade away. Laoban deserved so much better.
Pardon the clickbait headline/thumbnail, but I wanted to do a deep dive on the concept of inbreeding and its implications in the Thoroughbred breed, so I did. Hope I did this nuanced topic justice.
Happy Fathers Day to all the wonderful fathers and father figures out there, but wishing an especially happy day to the best father out there - the man who taught me to read a racing form!
Looking at the report of mares bred makes me wish I could afford to buy mares just for the sake of breeding to some of these stallions people have totally ignored.
Hit the jackpot at the used book store today! Grabbed the 1977 edition of Sire Lines and E. S. Montgomery’s The Thoroughbred. Will be returning for the 1942 Thoroughbred Sires and Dams and 1932-1969 Dams of Stakes Winners (and maybe a few others that caught my eye)
Sorry for the outburst earlier. I try to stay professional on here but I’ve been using a lot of emotional RAM the last few days without much recharge time and that incident sent me over the edge.
It's just so frustrating to me, the way people are so black-and-white with their opinions. "I think X. You don't think X, therefore you must think Y. Anyone who thinks Y is wrong/stupid/evil/etc." and their logic is absolute. Nobody leaves room for discussion or compromise.
Sitting here trying to write Monday’s blog post for the Timonium sale. This is supposed to be all about hope for the future, but it’s so hard to feel anything but dread about horse racing’s future.
It’s Monday, and I’ve decided it would be fun to get back into talking about mares entered in claiming races who I think might make useful broodmares. Let me know if you think this is an interesting topic, I’ve always had a lot of fun with these kinds of exercises
So grateful for everyone who has supported me in my first full year of doing bloodstock work full time. As a thank you, I'll be offering 10% off annual subscriptions to my website from now until the end of the year before I increase my prices on January 1st.
Wtf I’m offline for three days and come back to learn Jerry Moss and Art Collector have died and Honor Code has been sold to Japan? What else did I miss?
Wow, twenty new subscribers since Wednesday! Thanks so much to everyone for your support, this was an experiment I had absolutely no expectations for and at this rate I might hit 500 by the end of the year 🥲

Strong class for the Hall of Fame this year, but if Corey Nakatani doesn't get in, I'm going to riot. His induction is so overdue. He's the kind of jockey who could be the difference between a horse winning and losing.
I am SO excited that we got this colt from the remarkable female family of Special and by one of my favorite value stallions in First Samurai, who has three stakes winners from the family, including a pair of siblings under the third dam of this guy.
We struck early today
@OBSSales
, for one that was very high on our list - a big, strong First Samurai colt out of a Ghostzapper mare. There's some horse named Blame in the family too.
This one is also a

special! Reach out to us for more details...
Thanks for the memories, Saratoga! It was great to see so many friends from Twitter, meet so many

partners, and get eyes on a whole lot of horses. Starting the first leg of my journey back this morning, should be home in San Antonio by Wednesday!
This might be the best racing merchandise I’ve ever acquired. Thanks
@HorseRacingPPs
@Classhndicapper
for the inspiration to Google for photos of this guy and learn this pin existed and also happened to be available on eBay
Very excited for my first start as an owner with
@LBBStables
! I really like Our Country, and would love to see him put in a solid return to the races here.
Hope all is well with The Wine Steward, I still think he's the most talented horse we've seen in this division so far. Looking forward to him on the Kentucky Derby trail.
The situation is Maryland is getting sketchier by the day. The surface is fine, enter your horses, but you can’t train (on EITHER track?). So sad to see this happening in my home state.
Well, it’s the Wednesday before the Derby, which means you might as well not bother if you don’t have a pick yet 😜 I took a look at the full field and was surprised with which horse I found myself leaning toward in this year’s Kentucky Derby
Perhaps lost in the excitement of yesterday was the promising debut of Knightsbridge, a half brother to Speaker’s Corner by Nyquist for Godolphin and Bill Mott
I’d love to see just one owner take responsibility for being part of the problem and say something like “We just knew the guy won races and we didn’t look much into why, just let him do his thing. Nothing seemed off on the bills, so we didn’t ask questions when we should have.”
Not at all disappointed with my pick, though. Could've never had the winner, but I think Resilience is going to make a lot more noise in the three-year-old picture moving forward.
Thank you all so much for your kind words and support. It’s so comforting to know I have a community here I can turn to. This is such a scary time for the entire world, and seeing the responses here made me feel a lot less guilty for how I’m feeling.
