First poster session done and dusted at #ESPEN2024 🙌🏼 Kristin Gomes’ PhD work is exploring post-discharge malnutrition care for older people transitioning home from hospital, and how this may be improved to better combat malnutrition

Inpatient malnutrition care receives a lot of attention in research and practice, but what happens when patients with malnutrition are discharged home? This is arguably the best time for nutrition intervention - do we need to rethink our approach? 🤔

Our team developed a rigorous validation protocol for the GLIM criteria and piloted it at Gold Coast University Hospital. This paper provides practical guidance for others looking to undertake GLIM validation studies in their settings

Patients completing an electronic version of the MST from their hospital bedside is feasible, acceptable, and potentially cost effective, modeled to save $3.23 per patient screened and yielding more true cases of malnutrition than nurse-led screening

@MarcusNGPOD1 @VMcSharryRD For sure! The more we engage patients the better. Technology is also giving us more opportunities to do this 🙌🏼

@AliceGreenRD Thank you! We also engaged family members to complete the MST on behalf of the patient in some instances when patients were unable, which may work in some settings if there are family members visiting 😊

@blades_mabel For sure! 👏🏼 capturing patients early in their admission is the best way to ensure they receive the appropriate care

@AlexisW0294 You’re right - engaging patients in their own care in simple ways such as this can yield more accurate results, save staff time and allow patients to be at the center of their care 🙌🏼

@RD_Catherine We are doing an economic analysis to see if this approach (patients completing MST themselves) is cost-effective. Paper to come soon! 😊

@RD_Catherine At our site nurses do not always complete the MST properly, due to high volumes of paperwork. This makes it difficult for dietitians to triage patients (they estimated spending ~100 hours/week, per ward on inappropriate referrals).

@RD_Catherine The MST consists of 2-3 simple questions and is validated for patients to complete themselves. We found the patient scores were more accurate than nurses’ and were more likely to predict malnutrition.
