@littmath Perseverance is an excellent quality in all domains, but it can't solve every problem. I think for the majority of people this is one it can't.

@littmath If most people could, why don't they? Do you think there's something horribly wrong with math instruction? Is that why they don't demonstrate proficiency in algebra and geometry after taking those classes?

@littmath How do you reconcile "Most people can really get to quite a good level in mathematics" with national test results? I think the best explanation is that Wiles is, perhaps unconsciously, referring to a wildly unrepresentative sample. "Most people" won't pass Calc 1.

@mauddweeb Some people I went to grad school with (in STEM) basically don't interact with the general public. Technical jobs, all their friends are from work, no kids, don't go to church - their longest normie conversation is probably at the DMV.

@AjaxTheOdd @St_Rev @tracewoodgrains I believe this is an example of a pragmatism Trace would deem bad - which I agree requires an external standard of which pragmatisms are disallowed.
"this is a public service announcement: I have rejected my own previously claimed principles, because my enemies are bad." ok, that's cool I haven't

@tracewoodgrains @jkbdco Pew after-action report sure sounds like Evangelicals weren't any kind of outlier when it came to actually voting for Romney.
