Dear Congressman Wilson @RepJoeWilson - All Pakistani origin Americans, and 250 million Pakistanis appreciate that you have taken up the cause of Pakistani democracy in the US House of Representatives, and you pointed out that Generals have put twice popularly elected Prime Minister, Imran Khan in Jail. Big Thanks for taking a stand for the right thing! However we are concerned on this totally inaccurate impression your statement (and earlier letter to President Trump) creates in the minds of those, in the Congress & Administration, who may not be familiar with the history & power dynamics in Pakistan. Imran Khan has nothing to do with Chinese Communist Party or being lenient with President Putin. We don’t know who has created this impression in the minds of your Congressional team. Foreign policy in Pakistan, since the 1977 overthrow of PM Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, has been an exclusive domain of Pakistani military and Army Chief. Pakistan’s close relations with China started in early 1960s, under Gen. Ayub’s govt. and have moved from strength to strength under all governments that followed. It’s essentially a security relationship under firm control of the military with cooperation in joint defense production & missile programs from 1980s onwards. The latest economic dimension, CPEC, which is part of China’s Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) was initiated in early 2015, under the PMLN govt, of PM Nawaz Sharif. When Imran Khan became PM in Oct 2018, CPEC first phase was already completed. Sharif’s party, seized power through an engineered Regime Change, by the then Army Chief, in April 2022 and is still ruling in Pakistan with the help of another Army Chief, through a blatantly rigged elections. Congressman, similarly PM Khan’s visit to Moscow, in February 2022, at a very awkward moment, came in the background of Pakistani military, working since at least 2014, through joint military exercises to improve trust with Russia. PM Khan held a meeting with top diplomats, officials & select media before, 24 hours before leaving for Moscow, and asked everyone that should we go to Russia at a time when war looks inevitable. I was present in that meeting as a prominent journalist, with focus in foreign policy. PM khan was told by everyone that if he didn’t go, all efforts of the past several decades in improving relations with Russia will be lost. The then Army Chief, Gen. Bajwa, also advised him that he must go. Actually both relations with Russia and China are driven by security lens - given military’s fear of India and its need to balance regional dynamics. Congressman, I wonder who mislead a United States Congressman on these essential, publicly known facts? I am a keen observer of Pakistan’s foreign policy and will be more than happy to help your Congressional team to understand the dynamics of the region. You should kindly accord, Pakistani Americans an opportunity to brief you on these aspects! - kindly retweet so that it reaches Hon. Rep’s team. @FirstPakGlobal @PAKPAC @pakistanwalli @JehanzebParacha @javedhassan @SHABAZGIL @RichardGrenell @realZalmayMK @SusieWiles @PressSec @michaelgwaltz @justfp @RepCasar
