I just had a conversation with a longtime friend, who’s a full-on Trumper. He stopped talking to me for a few years when I turned against Trump, but we talk now, and he generally gives me shit, but I can tell he’s also curious about my thinking. This afternoon we were going back & forth about Elon Musk. I told him how wrong it is that an unelected wealthy guy has basically been given the keys to the federal government. Doing stuff he has no authority to do. I brought up the whole “Imagine how pissed you’d be if Obama had done the same with George Soros” thing, unrestrained executive branch, etc, etc, and he just kept dodging, we kept going back & forth, and then he finally gave me the money line: He said - “Fuck it Joe, I don’t care if he’s breaking the law, I don’t care if he’s doing shit he doesn’t have the authority to do, he’s my guy, he’s on my team, and he’s going after the bad guys.” There was a long pause, then I asked him if he knew how darn wrong that sounded. He just laughed, gave me some more shit, and that was the end of it. Look, I hear this kind of stuff from MAGA folks, my former friends, voters & supporters, all the time. They don’t mind if Trump has the powers of a king as long as he’s giving them stuff they want. But every time I hear it, it still bums me out.
