In March 2021, after six years of dedicated learning to write and about 4 years of querying, I signed with Laura Bradford. In March 2023 I'm signing copies of my debut novel! And this is just the beginning.
The arc of publishing is loooooong. Have patience and persevere ❤️
44: started writing seriously (after long hiatus)
51: signed with agent
53: debut novel on big 5 pub and working on book three 54: book two will release (2024)
And it’s fucking great. Life is long.

Four Hard Truths About Writing Your First Novel 🧵
First of all: FUCK YEAH! for getting to that page where you write “The End.” Lots of people say, “I’ve always wanted to write a novel." You actually DID it! That's huge.

How to survive querying in five very difficult steps. 🧵🪡
1. Understand: it’s going to take a long time. Lots of hours researching who to query, crafting your query letter, polishing your first pages. It. Will. Take. A. Long. Time.

For anyone who is sad because they are shelving a manuscript... a 🧵
My 2nd book, PRINCIPLES OF (E)MOTION comes out 1/9/23. It got a glowing review in Kirkus and a ✨review in Booklist.
It started as a seed in 2016. I shelved it TWICE.

Writing a novel takes as long as it takes.
Which is usually a long time.
It takes all the false starts and restarts.
It takes all the cuts and changes and rewrites.
Take the time. Do what needs done.
This is just how the thing works.

I. Finished. My. Manuscript. 83.2K
Sort of disoriented with all this space in my head.
I can think about other things now.
Also kind of feel like I just gave birth. (Which I have done for real. Twice.)

What annoys the fuck out of you as a reader?
I mean, in the book you’re reading. (I think we can all agree on things like lack of coffee and people trying to, you know, *talk* to you.)

What do you dream of being as a writer?
Not doing (e.g. publishing, making money, having a movie made of your book) but BEING? Where do you want your work to fall in the grand scheme of creation?
(Forgive me. Prosecco makes me philosophical.)

OMG OMG OMG I just sent the finished manuscript of my second book to my editor!!!!
Let the pacing and wringing of hands begin.
(Actually, I am very excited about this one... but also nervous... but also excited!!!)

What do you find most mentally and/or emotionally challenging about writing and the writing life?
For me it's impostor syndrome and self-criticism.

That feeling that there is some BIG EMBARRASSING flaw in your manuscript that you somehow haven't spotted despite scouring it 100 times before you send it off?
That feeling never goes away. Just so you know.

Today's unsolicited writing advice:
DO. NOT. SETTLE.
If it can be better, make it better.
Brought to you by a major structural revision to a WIP I thought was done.

Goodbye solo writing retreat. I spent two days, three nights & a morning:
-not going anywhere
-not seeing anyone
-totally uninterrupted
-writing (7K!)
-doing whatever the hell else I felt like
My introvert batteries are recharged. 💯recommend.

Am I the only one who doesn’t use up a notebook in order (front to back?) I just flip to a blank page and start there. Sometimes at the back. It’s a jumble but I guess it keeps the mind loose.

Leaving in an hour for a solo Airbnb writing retreat. Not only is it gorgeous, but it’s in the neighborhood where my WIP is set!

Author milestone—signing preorders …from people I don’t even know! 😁❤️ Thanks to everyone who ordered. You made my day.
Johanna Porter is Not Sorry comes out Tuesday!!! Order link in my bio.
Just Googled “breakfast for people who hate breakfast.” And what did I get? Breakfast recipes! I don’t want food. I never want to eat in the early morning. I want a food pellet that will get me through nutrition-wise to lunch.
I was kind of sad not to see my book on the shelves. Then I had the brilliant idea to…check the catalog. Three copies. Two checked out and one being held 🥰🥰🥰
OMGOMGOMG.... I think I wrote another *decent* book 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I didn't think I could. I felt like such an impostor after the first one, & I thought, that's it. I had one good book in me & now I'm done, but...I THINK I DID IT AGAIN!

Does anyone out there NOT bother about chapters when they're drafting? I just write scenes and figure I'll work out the chapter breaks later.

As a woman who started a career in my 20s (music), then another in my 30s (nursing), & another in my 40s (writing) with lots of overlap between them & two kids along the way, I am here to tell you, WRITING IS THE LEAST AGEIST of almost any career.

Four years, three books, and hundreds of queries elapsed before I signed with my agent (who promptly sold my book to a stellar editor!)
You may beat those odds, but you may not.

is a long game. So WRITE THE NEXT BOOK. (And best of luck! ❤️)
Damn. My first draft WIP has a Flesch-Kincaid reading level of 3rd grade. The last one was 5th grade--and I thought I was getting better at this! (FYI, I write adult fiction 😂)

Mathematical genius Dr. Meg Brightwood solves a famously difficult—and famously valuable—problem known as “the Impossible Theorem” but confronts her anxiety and the prejudices of her field when challenged to prove that the proof is her own.
Have you ever noticed that there are a lot more synonyms for laughing hard, than for laughing a little. I want a word for that little laugh you do when you're feeling kind of sarcastic about something.

I am utterly ignoring timeline in this first draft. There are dozens of brackets that say [date], [day], [time], [amount of time] that I'll fill in later. That stuff just bogs me down.
What do you skip over in a first draft & fill in later?
#writingcommunity

I’m at the point in my WIP that I really need to pin down the timeline.
Anyone have a favorite tip or tool for dealing with timeline?

Even though I am agented & my debut comes out 3/23, I’m still looking for things to get rejected from. I got rejected by three residencies this year. & I’m looking for more rejections! Bigger & better ones! Because each one is an opportunity.

Wrote 5K that will never make it into the book (wrong POV). But it was worth it. Once I know what the story behind the story is, everything gets easier.

You know that trope:
"I love you, but I can't be with you bc I am such a fuckup and I will ruin your life--so I am leaving forever!"
Do people really do that in real life? When they KNOW the other person loves them back?
(WIP r/t. Help!)

Well, I missed
#momswritersclub
tonight :(
But I had a teen in crisis. We went from being very sad to ranting about social justice, to walking down the block to see the big tree that fell down, to her making a tiktok about how I made her feel better.
Mom win.
You are superior to circumstance. You are bigger and badder than what life/art/publishing throws at you.
In the immortal words of Edna Mode, “Go. Confront the problem. Fight! WIN! ...And call me when you get back, darling. I've enjoyed our visit.” ❤️
Tea drinkers, is it a thing to pour some of you hot tea in the saucer to cool then sip from the saucer. It’s something I think I remember my mother doing.
2. It’s part skill (your book) and part luck. The only way to influence the “luck” part is to query a lot of agents. Keep about 20 “live” queries out there. If a rejection comes in, send out another one.
I’m into the long, slow, final edit of this MS. I love this part. The refining and polishing, but it takes a LOT of focus.
Are there parts of your process you could do all day, and other parts where you need breaks?

Dear Friends,
