Here is my first test image using Nightshade! I had it set to the defaults and it took ~12 minutes - about 1/3 of the 30min estimate. I will try higher render qualities next.

A camera doesn't ingest all previous photos to make a new image. Photoshop doesn't need any awareness of an artist's style to be a useful tool. The creative process is not a time consuming labour which needs automation.

Oh FFS I tried it too and Google showed me this AI image instead of actual Edward Hopper. The deluge of AI art is going to make search engines pretty useless unless they can properly filter/see it.

At this point you have to assume everything you ever post online will be copied, bought, sold, stolen, imitated, appropriated, algorithmically evaluated, judged, broadcast, translated, trained upon, by whomever thinks they can make a buck off it. ‘Share’ is a loaded term now.

Making games for the N64 was expensive! As artists we had high end PCs but also needed SGI Indys with dev boards to run the game. Later when Maya was introduced, we also needed SGI O2 workstations as well. In total a full 1997 artist setup could be over $40-50k CAD #gamedev

Today I took down my website devoted to sharing my family history research. I had run it openly for 14 years and it was used by other researchers too, but I now realize all of the content would be open to AI training, photos and all. I think I will turn it into a book instead.

Also GenAI was not developed by or for artists benefit to improve their work. That market $$ is much too small. It was made for the mass market by people who are not thinking about the downstream effects of what they are making. And who see creative work as output and content.

AIs are trained on existing datasets, so they will end up perpetuating the styles and ideas found in those datasets. This could lead to a lack of diversity and innovation in art. It would be ironic that such a technological advancement leads to a great stagnation.

Two hopeful developments in the battle against AI images. Both WoTC and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences were called out by artists for using them (unknowingly), and both apologized and committed to banning their use moving forward.

@ailantd You can mainly see artifacts in the flat blue sky, otherwise the effect looks like jpg compression or added noise. I think the effect is quite subtle though, and not distracting. And worth it!

As I see it, the push for ethical AI addresses two issues. First is one of consent. Most creatives I know would never contribute their work willingly to training genAI. They consider it theft, hence the need for ethical creation of these tools. /3

But a 2nd benefit is that genAI output is only as good as it’s inputs, and since most artists would not willingly contribute to it, this would severely handicap most of these model’s quality. They know this and so will fight tooth and nail for the right to use our work.

This is an additional joystick bus for the N64 dev board that went inside an SGI Indy workstation. The early controllers used RJ11, and when they switched to the final connector, Nintendo sent these little boards to developers. #gamedev #nintendo

I picked up this great book at Nasa in Houston in the mid 90s. It by Ron Miller and is an amazing encyclopedic survey of all of the spaceships created for literature, film and the real world over the years.

I finished a new 80m sea level rise map of Antarctica! Last year NASA released a new dataset of bedrock elevations through their MEaSUREs program and so I've been able generate a highly detailed map of what it would look like without ice (+80m of water). #sealevelrise #antarctica

Another thought I had. His artificial skin would definitely be more than just a covering. All of the myomer muscles to move his mouth and give his face expression would be contained in it, along with touch sensors, electronics, etc.
