Going to pin my Signal user name here, and encourage anyone with a tip to reach out! (NO PR.) Right now, I’m mainly covering how AI and other emergent tech is changing the internet, media, and entertainment industries.
got rejected by the "george r.r. martin summer writing workshop" at northwestern, which is sad, but the rejection notice came way past deadline, fully over a month later than they originally claimed, which is objectively very funny
I thought the whole “cats can have a little salami” meme was a quote from the Irishman and I just sat thu 3 1/2 hours of a movie waiting for them to say “cats can have a little salami”
As someone who has lived in both NYC (7 yrs in Brooklyn) and Chicago (cumulative total of 21 years, all south side) I am sorry to say that if you find Chicago “miserable” it’s a skill issue
Hi, I’m a NYer who lived in Chicago for 2 yrs. It has its charms but I found it mostly miserable: the winters, the measurably worse violent crime, the exceptional scale of segregation, the vast transit gaps, the monotonous suburban sprawl into farmland. It’s cheaper for a reason.
If you look at Acronym's "About" page today it says "we invested in Shadow" but if you look at the Wayback Machine from last month it's "we launched Shadow"
crazy that Grimes and I were in the same Russian lit class in college and now she's pregnant w/ a billionaire weirdo's child and i'm in an LL Bean robe with the phrase "Cozy Time" stitched into the side. (yes...it cost extra)
I heard a rumor that there was some sort of "cancelled women" retreat for high profile cancelled women and obviously i need to know more about this. if you know anything please DM me immediately. thank you.
Once again marveling at how grimes and I were fresh faced college coeds together and now she’s got a billionaire baby named e = mc Aerosmith or whatever and I’m quarantined in a 700 sq ft apt trying to convince myself that eating a full box of white cheddar cheezeits is self care
Our old landlords wouldn't give a COVID break & raised the rent. It was too much, so we moved. The apt has sat empty since Oct & is listed for $800 less *per month* than we paid. Negative thinking works! I cursed those ba$tards!
today i got a revel and was scootin down the street and the people on the street had opened the fire hydrant so my only option was to scoot through the giant spray of water and i did it and everyone clapped and it was literally the happiest moment of my life
The expectation that a young freelancer has the resources to report out 40-60% of a story before even *pitching it* is the exact sort of thinking that keeps everyone except the wealthy out of this field.
i just feel like i need to tell you guys that a girl i worked with in college is now a "somatic healer" who is going lightly viral on tiktok for telling people to pee on money
A few years ago, news broke about a drug-smuggling ring centered in Vice's Toronto office. This year, two former Vice Canada employees were arrested in connection with that ring. I wanted to know more about how it all happened. I went to Toronto to see:
i told my husband i'm gonna get bangs again and he said, why, so you can ask me every day if your bangs look greasy? ... anyways it was nice knowing all of you since i just got shivved
i know this is an unpopular opinion but i feel like.... completely repelled by the barbie movie. branded content with a wink and movie stars is still branded content! bring back the concept of selling out!!!!!!
Obsessed with the thought process that led to this CEO tweeting this thread in response to ppl from her company making explicitly racist remarks during her tenure. Just next-level bullshitting.
CollegeHumor launched over 20 years ago and helped shape modern comedy and the internet as we know it. This month, it laid almost everyone off. Here's my story on what happened:
my draft is due tomorrow so obviously i've reached the point in the night where it is absolutely necessary to browse the instagram of my ex-college fling's current wife (they joined a canadian doomsday cult homestead and she honestly has very good tips on canning food)
And finally, Pinterest is also hashing anti-vaxx memes to keep them from being reuploaded. (For the non-technical, hashing is tech mostly used to ID and block child abuse imagery and terrorist content.)
SHIT. they just found the ISIS murder dog's secret reddit account. he said some really messed up things about cats and commented under a picture of a pregnant ferret "i want to eat u." :(
Open container laws are classist, the way they are enforced is racist, and they infantilized us even when it wasn’t a pandemic that made socializing outside necessary. Get rid of them!!!
I regret to inform you that using this emoji “😂” means you’re old, according to my teen sister. Here’s a list of the new acceptable emoji & what they mean:
i've thought about it and the exact perfect level of successful/famous for creative people is "literally nobody ever recognizes you once on the street BUT you got to record a Drunk History segment"
@jpm25
Hey Jamie! I’m a reporter at wired and I’m interested in learning more about this because it definitely sounds newsworthy. If you and your wife are open to speaking w me, my DMs are open and my email is kate_knibbs

The NBA should have made its fake fans animals instead of humans. A bunch of fake humans is weird and depressing. A bunch of computer generated gorillas and dogs and hippos drinking soda and watching some ball? Whimsical, hilarious!
you know when you think a guy is hot but it turns out he's just tall? that's the bill de blasio story except replace "hot" with "baseline competent at governing" .... that man is one LEGGY FAILURE
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg says the Capitol Hill riots were not organized on its platform.
“I think these events were largely organized on platforms that don’t have our abilities to stop hate, and don’t have our standards, and don’t have our transparency.”
I had a baby 4 days ago, I love my son desperately, and I’ve also never been more adamantly pro-choice than I am right now recovering from birth. Abortions are a medical procedure and give people bodily autonomy. Abortion rights are human rights!
im having a generally hellish week but i did get to chat with
@desusnice
and
@THEKIDMERO
about doing a talk show during rona and they were delightful as always
the best part about working at home is when ya get to change from your "day sweatpants" into your "evening sweatpants" after a nice 4 pm shower ... and they're the same sweatpants!
Me: I’m in my 30s, I should work on classing up my wardrobe. Some everlane basics, some investment pieces. Cashmere. Neutrals. Also me: (orders this shirt and nearly cries a joy upon opening)
2022 predictions...

it's the 2nd anniversary of the ringer & also my second anniversary of working here, and i cannot think of another media company that would let me write long reported stories on whales, gossip columnists, content moderation, and snails, and i feel very lucky to work here 🙏
Wrote about & its founder Andy Hunter, who might be the only genuinely humble CEO I've ever met...its a story about bookselling, but also: zines, the Beastie Boys, the future of small businesses, and a pet rat named Agent Jellybean
i also have some ~professional news~ which is, I must admit, less exciting than Gibson. I'll be leaving The Ringer at the end of the year to try something new! I feel excited but also sad, because the
@ringer
team is beyond great
Imagine living in a world where someone with cancer's HEALTH CARE wasn't tied to the capricious bullshit decisions of a Netflix exec!!!!!!!!! The most moronic, demonic system.
Netflix laid me off earlier this week, which means my BF is losing his health insurance, which means we’ll no longer be able to afford his cancer treatment. Please consider donating and/or RTing so we can get things back on track 🤘🏾
Grim stuff from the alt-weekly world: the Village Voice, LA Weekly, and the Riverfront Times are publishing AI slop promoting OnlyFans creators, disguised as editorial:
