🧵This thread sets out important context for the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Before commenting, bear in mind that this context comes from: - Crown appointed judges - Established historical record - Independent commissioned research - Multiple year fact-finding court cases.

My kid's high school is having a fun Pride week. Well, it was supposed to be fun. Pride flag scavenger hunt, picnic, rainbow bake sale. Chalk drawing. Now there are parents outside with signs like "this school is making kids fa***ts." Is this really us Aotearoa? I'm heartbroken.

I do not accept that Te Tiriti o Waitangi, or its interpretation, should ever be subject to a popularity contest. The promises made are to stand in perpetuity. If you are Pākehā or tauiwi, I sincerely hope you will stand up and make your voices heard. History will be watching.

This may be one of my less popular opinions, but I hate hearing Luxon talking about the 'obligations' of beneficiaries. People don't owe society or the government just for being given the bare minimum to survive. Bring on a UBI.

Our media is breathlessly reporting that “research has found” every $1 invested in Gumboot Friday results in $5.70 of social return. These downstream benefits are notoriously difficult to measure so I went digging to find who did the “research.” You’ll never guess… 🧵

This is a lie. The new govt is inheriting a triple A rated economy, if they fuck that up that's on them. However, it speaks to how the coalition plans to use disinformation in order to justify their cuts to public services and other policies of austerity. Don't believe it.

We lost because: - Labour was insipid & didn’t stand behind their record - The right had money coming out of their ears - A credulous media treated parties like ACT seriously instead of like fascists - NZ is racist & hates poor people That last one is the hardest to stomach 💔

What I can gather from 'New Zealanders' trending on Twitter is that we're going to have fewer visits from Covid deniers and TERFs, and more from people who got vaccinated & support trans rights. This being exactly what we wanted, I accept the terms of the trade 😆🌈🇳🇿

The government saying it wants to have a “debate” about Te Tiriti, but then having none of its leaders come to Tūrangawaewae, shows exactly the kind of “debate” they’re interested in: completely one sided, and all on their terms. How feeble.

And as a last note on this (for now). In the past I have worked for a bunch of different Ministers of Health. As an official I was never ONCE sent this sort of bizarre and unprofessional political diatribe by a Minister. This coalition truly has no idea how to do their jobs.

Nat MP Simon O'Connor is literally pushing replacement theory on Facebook today: "They are not seeking plurality but replacement." Not so much a dog whistle as a foghorn, and boy are the racists of NZ lapping it up 🤢 Where's the media scrutiny when you actually need it? #nzpol

Surely this is an argument for better te reo Māori education instead of this fearful, backwards approach to a beautiful language that is unique to Aotearoa

Do you know the difference between Waka Kotahi, Te Pūkenga and Te Whatu Ora? Christopher Luxon says some Kiwis don't.

Winston's transphobic rant about a c1s woman athlete not being female enough is a perfect example of how transphobic attitudes hurt everyone. There is normal variation in what women look like and this gender policing creates a narrower & narrower 'acceptable' lane for us all.

Supporting carers costs less than carer burnout. School lunches cost less than lower academic achievement & earning potential. Smoking tax is less than the health costs. Stop saying this govt are good economic managers when they'd fail a basic marshmallow test time & time again.

You can’t be lazy on $385/week because it’s HARD WORK (& ironically, expensive) being that poor. You can definitely be lazy when you own multiple properties and have passive income though.

This argument that "sex ed should be taught at home" is so disingenuous. Firstly, parents can already opt their child out if they don't want them learning sex ed at school. This is about removing the choice from those of us who WANT our kids to have good quality RSE at school. 🧵

Oh FFS, this really is the Cooker Coalition. We're going to go from a world leading pandemic response to being the most poorly prepared.

MSD is introducing new rules to cut down on the number of people using emergency housing, including tougher eligibility and a stand-down for 13 weeks on the housing grant if a person breaks the rules. Where will people live if not in *emergency* housing?

A referendum on Te Tiriti is like a referendum on a contract - it's not a popularity vote, it's a signed agreement that's done and dusted.

ACT's proposed referendum on the Treaty principles - their Treaty Principles Act - effectively cuts out Māori authority from future understandings of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It deletes the tino rangatiratanga of Māori from Treaty principles. This is very far-reaching & dangerous. >

Not when it's someone like Mark Mitchell, no. But for someone like Metiria Turei, well - people like *that* should be chased out of Parliament for their past actions, naturally. The two standards of scrutiny apply.
