@dvassallo My first programming teacher was clearly just reading a chapter ahead in class and could basically answer no real questions on the subject. YMMV with teachers.

@Scotchjake @SaysSimulation They aren’t going to say “this is a bribe, Iowa” They will have reasons. “Respectable” reasons why they want to bribe Iowa. It’s not even a bribe you see. Just sober policy. Climate change has long been a favorite reason to enact questionable and widely unpopular policy.

@Scotchjake @SaysSimulation Not even. It’s a giveaway to farmers and ADM. specifically because Iowa Caucuses. Nobody wants to tell Iowa farmers that this is an absurd grift, because their opponents sure won’t.

The problem is legacy systems. Everyone important, including the government itself is running systems nobody wants to touch. Big Iron mainframes running bespoke COBOL code that the last remaining original team member died of a Heart attack at 70 in 2018. That’s your real problem. To fix long term, is you keep assigning SSN_legacy numbers for as long as you have combos, and assign everyone a SSN_rev2025 one as well. We won’t run out for a while, and then everyone can plan for the new when they make new stuff or updates existing stuff.

@dylancvdean @theo That’s not really the point though. The possibilities are limited. Everyone thought it was fine because a billion is a big number and nobody realized how sticky standards become in a modern context. If SS was invented today, it would be UUID.

@no3puttsforlife @NoRiskNoParty Inspections are a different beast entirely. Getting it registered is its own ordeal. You go in to the DMV and say you have a 2025 Hilux, they will tap away at their computer and eventually tell you that no such vehicle has been approved for use and they can’t help you.

@no3puttsforlife @NoRiskNoParty Because it met the requirements for the model year. The rules are aimed at making the bulk of vehicles safer, and assume vehicles cycle out over time. The people who have a Hilux in the US typically find a wrecked Tundra and swap the VIN. Now it’s officially a Tundra.

@Andrew87229442 @ShannonJean 1. The design has been off patent for decades. Anyone can just make them. 2. It’s the NFA stopping you from having one, not a lack of availability.

@Brushbeater @321zonk The one I got from rabbit labs has a decent case on it. I wouldn’t call it rugged, but it doesn’t strike me as especially bad. This one you got here is far worse with the exposed board, etc

@TimConley @sweatystartup Committee, and it’s specifically because they required everyone from 5’2” to 6’4” should be able to see a child in front of the vehicle at some specific distance. Metro buses tend to also have this requirement, but don’t have the engine in front, so don’t need this stupid nose.

@juan_krepecki @NoRiskNoParty @sonnysizzak Ironically, Toyota will be the first to want excuses to not import these. It will just canibalize their expensive truck sales.

@NoRiskNoParty @sonnysizzak And as long as the Treasury approves, you can print your own dollar bills… (They will never approve)

@Ffxivmarket @NoRiskNoParty Regulations for safety, etc. When people want hiluxes in the US, they typically buy the VIN of a totaled Tundra or something and then make the hilux that truck instead, as there isn’t anything that says you can’t heavily modify an approved truck.

@NoRiskNoParty They won’t be street legal, and states are cracking down, because of the rise in popularity of kei trucks.

@WyattMatthers @Farmer31548981 It can be revoked, but it would require Congress to do so, and Congress is dysfunctional.

@UncleZoGunTales Those fancy featherweight revolvers (single action of course, so there isn’t a hammer to get caught on stuff) are super unpleasant to shoot. And for some reason people suggest them to new people…
