A mother : A mother can walk around smiling and laughing and even having witty conversation while holding onto a broken heart that is not even hers. Our kids pain and struggles can live right in our chest cradled carefully and always always felt. they reach up into our throats leaving a little lump our laugher has to hitch itself over and they sink down into our bellies like a little group of moths scrambling around never letting us forget they are there. But we smile and make small talk and make lunches and drive places and sit face to face with our coworkers but if we have a kid with a broken heart we are often doing all these things while our kids pain seeps through our veins even as we walk through halls looking like we are just breezing through the day. We can hold their broken hearts and walk through a grocery store and give a speech at work and smile at strangers and say hi how are you? And even look our kids dead in the eye and tell them it is all going to be OK that they can do this thing. We know they can. We know we can sit with them and give great advice and be intent listeners and we can do these things while the pain from those broken hearts live inside our own. We know their feelings are their own to have, but in that connection of parent to child every one of their sorrows can make a home in our hearts. The big ones can set up shop for many days and weeks. In the night in unguarded moments we ache for them and pray for them and make plans to ease all that our kids are holding. We can curl around them and lessen the pain. The strength of a mother could be missed if you don’t look closely. It might not be visible when you see a mother smile and even laugh or unload all the things from the van like a trooper or when she’s watching that kid so intently from the sidelines or when she’s looking out the window waiting for a now tall kid to arrive home. But know she is also the sum of the joys and sorrows of every one of her children for all the days. She may have stared at the ceiling at 2:00 pushing down that lump in her throat but she is up in the light of day taking care of all of the things. That is what we do. Our kids are never alone because we hold their hearts in our hearts. The honor and weight of this is the price of the beauty of motherhood. For all of our days on this planet, world without end amen.

It was truly an honor to chair the Natural Orifice Consortium (NOSCAR) during the SAGES NBT weekend in Houston alongside Geri Keane from ASGE. My journey with NOSCAR began a few years ago, thanks to Pat Sylla, who introduced me to this initiative as we shared a passion for advancing the boundaries of natural orifice surgery. The event featured a packed room and an agenda filled with engaging talks on innovations in foregut, bariatrics, and colorectal surgery. NOSCAR represents a remarkable collaboration between SAGES and ASGE, bringing together brilliant minds in surgery and gastroenterology to drive patient-centered innovation. #NOSCAR @SAGES_Updates @GeriKeane @patsyllamd @KevinElHayekMD @debby_keller @ehaasmd @AdventHealthCFL @AdventHealthMD

If you have a friend or loved one who left a toxic relationship, they are beginning a brand new journey full of fear, uncertainty, and difficult realizations. They are not out of the woods, but are only accepting that the woods exist and they need to escape them. Know that they need you to support them. Know that they need you to listen when they grieve the loss of all that was familiar. Know that they need you to show up on days they can’t find the energy to get out of bed and face the world.

I like the idea of synoptic report for all colorectal cases. Makes life easy!

I met Debra Lai last year at Pacific northwest Colorectal meeting. Life is too short! Days are long but years are short. We have a lost a beautiful soul in colorectal surgery @ASCRS_1 @SAGES_Updates @AmCollSurgeons
A huge and unexpected loss for our @GWSurgery family. A sobering reminder that time is precious. Debra Lai was just getting started leaving her mark Earth side and those of us that knew her are better for it. 💜 @GWSurgChair
