We work hard and suffer many failures to accomplish work goals. Sometimes we have to do the same to accomplish our personal goals as well. Proud to share my latest accomplishment. He was worth the wait.

I think I would say “ok, so I’ll be at work tomorrow unless you tell me to stay home and don’t punish me for it. Happy to let the media know that you created an impossible situation for me that essentially encouraged me to go to work and place patients at risk.”
Such an honor to teach robotic surgery to the residents of University of Michigan! Great group of smart, fun, fast learners. Thanks for having me!

Dr. Brandon White (now PGY2) received one of the 1st robotic challenge coins for putting in the most hours on the simulator as an Intern. Simulation allows us to train in a safe & responsible way, preparing him for the OR.

Unfortunately I think society has done a good job of teaching women that there is something embarrassing or shameful about a natural bodily function such that women don’t want to report issues related to that issue.
Academic surgery at its finest. Leaving the OR & loving my team composition & that we are all leaving together w/ smiles 😄. My team: MS3, PGY2, sub-I, & PGY 5. Fixing hernias, having fun, everyone learning from each other. 🔪 🤖

This gets old. Usually from 🦕 that just need to stop talking or from physicians who aren’t surgeons and just don’t know what they are talking about. Happily Married. My daughter is proud of me and brags about me. My son thinks I hung the moon. And I think I’m an ok surgeon 😏
I was feeling the Mondays this morning. Got to my office to find a lovely thank you note from a patient. A small effort with huge effects. Feeling uplifted and ready to help more patients get their quality of life back!

I’ve learned along the way that some people just like to pull the rug out from under you so that they look better. It’s upsetting when it happens. In retrospect, I feel bad for them that they are so insecure & feel threatened by the success of others. It’s them, not you.
Got a package delivered today and was so thrilled to find this from a just graduated chief. As a resident I thrived off the approval of my attendings. As an attending it feels just as good to get the approval of your residents.

Certainly helps. Unfortunately counter acted by the extreme sleep deprivation, general inability to hydrate oneself, and depression and extreme fatigue that leads to poor skin care habits like not showering for days.

First day of pre-K!
I want you to grow. But please slow down
I have an addiction to flavored sparkling water. I drink at least 3 daily. I branched out and tried mango today after my daughter insisted we buy it. Surprisingly good. Many flavors I regret buying. What are your favorites?
When you have to come in for an emergent operation in the early hours, I do what I need to do to feel empowered (my shirt), to have some luck (my evil eye), and pump myself up (3 rounds of Enter Sandman ✅).

DV5 finally got FDA approval and we can finally speak about it after years of an NDA. “Intuitive has a new robot coming out and it has haptic feedback!!” 😁
Life of an academic surgeon married to a busy professional. Nearly 2 weeks of not seeing my husband as we both were traveling and passing each other in the air. So happy to be back home with my complete family.
Well it took 3 days of hot debate. I thought it might end in divorce. The family has all agreed on a name finally. Twitter family, meet Enzo. “Ruler of the house”
My PGY2 on service just told me the robotic simulator has become her “meditative happy place.”

Got off console at end of case to find my amazing robotic assist PA was doing some teaching of his own to the medical student & surgery PA resident. Proud to have taught him & then to see him passing that knowledge on to others. Academic medicine at its best!
@hopkinssurgery
I don’t think I’m alone in the medical profession to say I’m feeling a bit toasted around the edges these days. Then my 80 something patient thanked me for getting her through her surgery with my skilled hands and told me how grateful she was for me.

I just got off the phone with a patient I’ve operated on a few times and known for almost 4 years. He said “I appreciate you and I appreciate all that you’ve done for me.” I needed to hear that.

It would be nice if the teachers could prompt just a bit. “Anything else she is good at? Maybe being a doctor? Helping people? Surgery?”
Nope. Watching TV. 😝
#doctormom
I’m surprised how many patients have questioned my competency as a surgeon upon returning from maternity leave. As if I would forget how to operate in a few months away. Is this something my male colleagues retuning from sabbatical or paternity leave face as well?
Made a beach trip this week. While my husband played w/ my daughter on the beach I stayed sheltered under a tent w/ my son, hot & unable to move as he slept. All I could think was how grateful I am for the burden.

What types of cases are these residents learning on then? Robotic whipples?
They should absolutely have robotic cholecystectomy as part of their safe learning curve. Hard to teach robotics when you can’t perform low acuity cases robotically.

I had the same experience. I’d say I’m pretty tough and OB was the only rotation where I had to excuse myself to the bathroom at least twice so I could let a few tears roll off before shaking it off and returning to work.

An important topic that ambitious 🚺 may not think about until too late. I encourage all young 🚺 to consider options. you do not need to have children to be happy or complete, but if you want them and can’t have them it can be devastating.
