5/ Fit to outcomes quickly: Sliders are special. They start outperforming pitch models descriptively after just 900 pitches. If your slider is getting great outcomes after 500 pitchesāeven if it doesnāt look great metricallyāstart giving the Jordan shrug. Models canāt measure everything.

Great post on VAA. Hitters need to understand this when formulating approach and pitch selection. Tying in arm slot and VAA in certain parts of the zone, can help paint an even clearer picture. Hitters donāt bring a knife to a gun fight.
So what correlations can be make between Vertical Approach Angle (VAA) and variables like Whiff%, K%, tjStuff+, and IVB. For the sake of this mini-breakdown, I sourced data from Baseball Savant from 45 qualifying pitchers with the following parameters based on the 2024 data set. FB Grouping Only (4S/2S/CU/SI) Min 400 Pitches Average Velocity 96.0+mph "High" and "Low" VAA classification based on range dictated by data set. Letās dive into it.
