What a crazy year 2023 was!
- lost my Dad
- proved
@freshkart_io
's business model
- launched
@OTDToday
- launched
@maytentech
focussing on mobility tech
- Met interesting people in Europe/SF
- Wrote my first Angel check
- Created new jobs in Brussels
Looking forward to 2024
One of the largest Auto dealership in Belgium (D'Ieteren) just acquired a bicycle retail store in Brussels.
The Auto Dealer has setup an internal bicycle division with the goal of setting up a nationwide e-bike sales and service chain.
Number of EV registrations in Germany went up by 207% in 2020 vs 2019
In France, it was 158%.
Though I don't include PHEV in EV mix, in Germany PHEV registrations exploded! +342% in 2020 vs 2019. (+304% in France)
Apple Smart Bike System
In 2009,
@Apple
filed a patent where an iPod or iPhone could be connected to a bike fitted with sensors.
This setup would provide cyclists with real-time performance data (speed, heart rate, position, power etc.)
Leaving San Francisco with a lot of
@Waymo
trips.
I had zero glitches and gave 5⭐️ for all trips.
On all trips, Waymo was very responsible around other road users, yielding for other misbehaving cars, pedestrians, mm users etc.
Chinese EV maker NIO just crossed $100 Billion MarketCap, surpassing Volkswagen.
@NIOGlobal
is now the third most valuable car company, behind
@Tesla
and Toyota.
Bolt is in talks to acquire
@TIERMobility
Bolt and Tier are fundamentally different companies.
@boltapp
is built lean ground up!
Bringing these two together is a tough job. If the deal goes through, expect a large job cut on Tier side.
Super happy to announce that e-motionlabs was acquired by
@Bond_Mobility
today!
Cédric Langer, the team and I will join the BOND Mobility team continuing our work on emerging mobility tech.
It takes a lot of courage to build a hardware company in Europe.
Though it is sad to see Vanmoof perish, they've built a massive brand and a product that challenged existing bike supply chain.
Kudos for being brave
@VanMoof
!
Skimming through the IPO doc of Ninebot from 2019, Sequoia owns 16.8% of Ninebot and is the largest shareholder. Interestingly, Sequoia has participation in Bird - which has more OKAI scooters than Segway!
Also, Intel owns 3.32%
I never found words to explain my experience using the new BOND bike.
But, Horace Dediu (
@asymco
) in this piece, put words to that experience.
The best Bike experience piece I've read till date!
@Bond_Mobility
Lime has 12 weeks before running out of cash.
-Daily revenues of Lime plunged from ~$617k to ~$192k (14 March vs +3days).
-In Paris, # rides went down to 300/day (down 98%)
-Global # rides: 147k to 52k
-Monthly Burn: $22.5M
-Cash in Jan: $50M
Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng started delivering their G3 electric SUV's in Norway!
In the next years, we will see many more young EV cos from Asia expanding in Europe.
This thermal insulated bag is probably the only notable innovation around food delivery in the last years.
Everything else (vehicles, tech, ops, delivery model..) is far behind.
Big day for us today. We launched our closed beta to select users in Brussels after months of hardwork from our team.
What we're building will fundamentally change how we live/move in cities, reshape our living spaces and improve healthy life expectancy - all in one package ;)
@gokulr
11pm all-hands for the entire org. isn’t normal, unless it is pushed by someone in the US without regards for local time in India. Folks in India normally wouldn’t push back on these.
Entrepreneurs staying late, is very normal.
All Cars hired by Delhi Govt. will be EV's in 6 months.
Currrent goal: 25% of all new vehicle registrations in Delhi should be Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) by 2024.
Note that is is "BEV" (doesn't include PHEV's)
Last year, we changed our pricing model from being based on mins to kms.
What we observe is that users are much more relaxed using
@Bond_Mobility
bikes vs others.
No pressure in getting to the destination as fast as possible!
Ditching physical buttons and switching to touch screens was a pivotal moment for mobile phones, accelerated by the launch of iPhone
Easy to see what should be ditched for e-bikes to have an iPhone moment
In a shared context, e-scooters and e-bikes don't compete against each other.
Target users, distance travelled etc. are different for both.
imo, they are two distinct mobility modes.
Super excited to announce the launch of my new venture
@freshkart_io
After spending the last years in mobility, building e-motionlabs, Kyte and BOND Mobility, now I'm shifting focus on improving healthy human life expectancy (HLE)
Post COVID-19 crisis, micromobility will see surge in users.
- Users will shift from PT and ride hailing to owned and shared MM
- Some shared MM users will shift to personal cars, owned MM or walking.
Founder of Tier recently signed the Founder's Pledge, committing to donate 100% of his shares.
Oh wait! Not to charity but to an impact investment firm called Blue Impact Ventures!
Oh wait! He owns the Investment firm!
Impressive narrative as usual!
.
@boltapp
just upped their scooter game! From being unusable to something good..
What changed? They went from building scooters in-house to getting them from
@okai_co
Spent money on own HW only if you can beat Segway and OKAI at their own game!
Hello
@Ridefrogs
;)
Ninebot is raising $293 million via their IPO.
Ninebot submitted registration documents on 21st June and is waiting for the results.
Here is a quick snapshot of their filing last year.
Both
@deel
and
@remote
offer a free HR tool but Deel wants you to get on a call before they can give access.
Mandatory onboarding calls are super old school.
Not sure how many customers deel would lose, given that both offer similar services.
Micromobility co. Reby Acquired for $100m by one of their largest shareholders - a Canadian PE firm (House of Lithium)
Reby says they had $15m in Revenue and $3m EBITDA in 2021..
I have way too many questions ;)
“In the worst case scenario, an electric car with a battery produced in China and driven in Poland still emits 22% less CO2 than diesel and 28% less than petrol.”
I’m moderating a panel on “Solving the pain points of shared mobility” at the
@MicromobilityCo
Conference.
We have
@BirdRide
CEO Michael, Sinah from
@swobbee
and Wendy from Joyride on the panel.
If you have questions for the panel, drop them here and I’ll pick a few.
@Dott
just crossed 1million rides in Brussels, ~18months after launch.
- Some of their scooters lasted 18months!
- Operationally profitable since November last year!
These scooters deployed by
@boltapp
are good!! Took a 2.7km ride through bumpy road and was a good experience. The handle is curved for better ergonomics and is comfortable.
@okai_co
did a great job with this new model.
Weighing less than 500kg, Citroen Ami should fall under Micromobility?
This was engineered by my ex-colleagues at Altran (now Capgemini engineering)
more than 100 Engineers from France, Morocco, India and China worked on this.
Best moment at the panel today was Bird’s CEO being honest that sticking to non-swappable battery scooters wasn’t the best idea.
With SPIN acquisition, Bird is intending to move towards scooters with swappable batteries

Swappable battery e-scooters are better for OEM's than operators.
OEM's now make more money per scooter than before. Operators need to buy 1.3 to 1.5 batteries per e-scooter.
Few months ago when I got to know
@Bond_Mobility
more, something that was fascinating was that BOND doesn't rebalance e-bikes.
Rebalancing is done via dynamic Bonus zones where customers drop off bikes - dropping that cost line to zero.
I don't know of any other train operator that brought micromobility options this close to the track! :)
@sbbnews
just introduced "Sharing Zones" in Zurich, with MM options much closer to the track.
@Bond_Mobility
is the only e-bike provider to be part of this trial
Bird will be much known for their personal/owned micromobility vehicles than shared in the next years.
With Bird Air e-scooter, the new e-bike and a network of dealerships,
@BirdRide
is easily positioned to become a big player in the owned space.
Still an underestimated market
Free-floating e-bikes in cities are assets waiting for new business model iterations!
Haven't seen many business model innovations, though there are plenty of options.
Relying only on conventional sharing model might not be the best for e-bikes!
➡️ Pony, seul acteur français de la micromobilité, lève 6 millions d'euros
➡️ Cette start-up propose des trottinettes et des vélos allongés
➡️ Elle a un modèle original puisque les particuliers peuvent acheter ses engins
I'm constantly looking for delivery focussed vehicles. This one from CAKE retails for ~€6.5k and would cost close to ~€8k with the delivery box.
For the same price, you can get a Citroen Ami.
Curious to see what the adoption would be in delivery, given the high price.
Undervalued long-term effects of moving to Europe: Improved (healthy) Life expectancy.
- Cleaner air
- quieter/safer streets
- high-quality food
- active lifestyle
- good work-life balance
- better healthcare
- personal freedom
all contribute to a longer and healthy life
Bike share use surges in Wuhan after lockdown was lifted on 8th April.
- 70% spike vs previous week
- Hellobike saw 10x increase vs Jan 23rd, the day of lockdown
Micromobility operator

recently presented their progress at

Capital Markets Day and here is a snapshot

Over the last three years, industry rides have grown at 120% per year
With the Paris shared e-scooter vote, it is time for
@limebike
to put the
@BoostedBoards
IP to work.
Boosted Rev v2.0 would bring in more cash from France than their shared ops.
Participatory democracy is great but doesn't work if only a small portion of the population would participate.
For such referendums, if the voter turnout is less than a certain % (say 60%) of the population, results should be canceled.
Else, like Paris, this can be used to
Dimanche dernier, plus de 100 000 parisiens se sont déplacés pour décider de l’avenir des trottinettes en libre-service à Paris dans le cadre d’un bel exercice démocratique, que je vous raconte en détails. ⤵️
I just bought mymobilitypal(dot)com domain and will start working on building a tool to track my mobility behaviour.
If it is any good, I'll open it to others as well!
Let's see how this goes.
End to End time to unlock and ride a
@Dott
scooter: 18.3s
Ending the ride: 8.5s
This is not just the lock/unlock command time, but time to open the app, scan qr and unlock.
Impressive timing! Goal should be to get the unlock time below 15s!
Yes, I used a stop watch ;)
This is the third time I’m attending Micromobility conference and for the first time owned dominates the conference than shared!
Interesting evolution in a short time!
What Drover has built is impressive but their talent is best spent on solving real problems rather than satisfying cities that have zero knowledge on tech.
Cities that ask for sidewalk detection tech on e-scooters should go through a micromobility tech
#101
course
.
@boltapp
spent €72m last year to buy e-scooters.
If OKAI goes public right now, probably they’d be valued higher than all scooter sharing cos combined.
Hello Hamburg!
We just launched in Hamburg.
Also, Thanks to our partnership with FREE NOW, riders in Hamburg and Munich will now have a greater choice of vehicle types.
Kudos to all those at
@Bond_Mobility
and
@FreeNow_DE
who worked hard to make this possible! :)
Voi is testing a 3 wheeled sit-down (option?) scooter in NYC..
The base of the scooter looks similar to the one launched by
@ridespin
recently.
Both from Segway, I assume!
JUNE 2020 Update: 🚲🛴After a difficult stretch for the shared micromobility sector following the outbreak of COVID-19, June was the first month some of the operators saw demand return to January 2020 levels.
@MicromobilityCo
Market Cap of
@Apple
surpassed CAC 40 index of France (~ top 40 listed cos) and DAX index of Germany (to 30 listed cos).
Just one single company from the US!
Not far, when
@Microsoft
and
@amazon
will overtake European Indices.
In 2021,
@dott
generated €32m in revenue with ~19m rides, operating in 29 cities.
€64k revenue per employee, with 499 employees.
€908 revenue/vehicle with ~€35k vehicles.
