WHAT IS LIFE I have a poem in the new issue of @3pennyreview (alongside Sharon Olds and Charles Simic!). It’s the first one this too-scared-to-submit-until-age-40 poet has ever had plucked out of the slush pile by a journal. And what a journal. Thank you forever, Wendy Lesser!

It took me until this year, age 41, to work up the brazenness it takes to submit to the Poetry Review, the brazenness I had in spades as a little girl. Thank you forever @AndreBagoo @iamrichardscott @PoetrySociety

2 years ago @3pennyreview accepted this poem, despite the fact that I'd never had a poem accepted for publication. I didn't get an acceptance anywhere for a full year afterward, but this kept me going. I've said it before and I'll say it again: thank you forever, Wendy Lesser ♥️.

Last year I turned 40 and started sending poems out for the first time since I was rejected from an MFA program 14 years ago. In 2021 I had a poem in @3pennyreview, was a @breadloafwriter scholar, and got a Hawthornden fellowship. I also got 39 rejections. I’m most proud of them.

This, folks, was the LAST COPY of @CHotchandani’s debut poetry collection THE BOOK EATERS at #AWP24. ✨✨✨ I had to buy it. It’s the kind of book that, after you read it, you NEED to give it to everyone you know.

@ShikshaWrites 3 days and it was my first-ever acceptance, one year ago! Any journal that gets back to people so quickly is welcome to not take sim subs imo. And they pay $200/poem! They get a ton of submissions but I’m proof that anything is possible…good luck!.

Happy release day @CHotchandani! THE BOOK EATERS is a stunning debut weaving together reckonings of lost language—a father’s memories, a new mother’s thoughts—words lost and enduring, consumed and consuming. As @VChangPoet says, it’s “simply a gorgeous book of poems.” ✨

@emdashphillips My first workshop leader said “I’d like to see you writing poems of which you’re not the center.” I heard this as “Don’t write poems about yourself/your life.” Still feel guilty that I do.

Happy to have this minty, sickeningly floral sonnet in the current issue of Poetry Scotland. And thank you to @brendashaughnes for telling me that this was, in fact, a poem, at a time when I wasn’t sure if anything I wrote was actually poetry.

@brendashaughnes’s poetry delights and destroys me. “What could be queerer than this queer tug-lust for what already is, who already am, / but other of it?” I’m thrilled to add The Octopus Museum to @PoetrySociety’s #thesealeychallenge book list ✨ @SealeyChallenge @AAKnopf.
Day seven of the #SealeyChallenge @poetalicewhite recommends 'The Octopus Museum' (@AAKnopf) by @brendashaughnes. ""What could be queerer than this queer tug-lust". Shaughnessy will take you on a fantastical, harrowing journey through a preposterous future that is all too now."

@itsdbouts “Unfortunately, the piece is not for us.” Something about “not for us” just feels a bit harsh to me. I’d prefer simply “Unfortunately, we won’t be publishing this piece.” But I’m probably way too sensitive! 😂.
