Last night, with absolutely no fanfare whatsoever, parliament passed a 66% increase to the NHS surcharge. This migrant tax now means that people will pay £1,035 every year to access the NHS, no matter their contributions to the system via tax or NI.

@ladyofstars74 @Patrici89225734 Still a bit unclear - the minister said something about not applying to people who are already here on a family visa, but most of these last for 30 months max, so even if doesn't apply right now, likely to apply in the future.

I've heard a lot of horrible stories while working on our report on the 10-year route to settlement. But Nura's story encapsulates both the absurdity and the harm of this immigration policy with painful clarity. Nothing is worth the price she and her family have paid.

A lot of talk today about the English Children's Care Review. The thing that leaps out at me is how little migrant children with No Recourse to Public Funds are considered. There's a brief para in the main report, which is welcome, but no rec's 🧵 #MacAlisterReview #CareReview

Great result on Friday in another strategic 'no recourse to public funds' (NRPF) litigation. The SSHD conceded that barring our destitute client and her 1 year old baby from welfare benefits was unlawful & the NRPF condition was lifted from the Claimant's leave to remain. 1/4

@AndrewTingley @ladyofstars74 @Patrici89225734 But most people on family visas have to get a new one every 30 months - what happens then? Can't imagine they'll be ongoing leniency, esp given that some people will have to renew their visas 3 times before they can settle permanently.

Govt estimate of impact of raising the family visa threshold ⚠️Up to 30,000 families will no longer qualify for a family visa, but ⚠️we don't know anything about income of these families anyway ⚠️so Govt doesn't know how this will cut migration anyway

The headline thrust of a 2023 asylum bill will be the THIRD time this Govt is legislating for something it simply *cannot* do. It’s going to leave a lot of ppl very scared. But that’s pretty much all. Not sure about you lot but I’m sick of the repeat performance.

The 2023 asylum bill will make those who cross the Channel "inadmissable" for asylum in the UK. (The 2022 Nationality and Borders Act already did that, but this will re-legislate it again).

The solutions are simple. ✅scrap the 10-year route ✅cut visa fees to cost ✅give visas for 5 yrs, not 2.5 This would not only dramatically improve the lives of people on the route, it'd also slash the amount of work the Home Office needs to do
