Did you know that 4 million people could soon struggle to prove their basic rights?
The Govt. plans to overhaul how we prove our immigration status and is moving to a digital only system.
It's crucial we raise awareness. Share NOW!

🎉INCREDIBLE NEWS! 🎉
The Government has just announced a permanent extension of free school meals to ALL families affected by No Recourse to Public Funds! (1/8)
We spent 11 hrs at
@ukhomeoffice
advocating for a family of 4 homeless asylum seekers (including a 5yo) so they could get a place for the night.HO refused bc they had £200 cash & "weren't destitute".We didn't leave til the decision was overturned & they had a roof over their head
Double celebration this week:Albert got treatment confirmed AND was confirmed that he has right to live in UK. It took an endless series of media interviews and parliament debates to get here-what about all those who aren’t in the spotlight?

@JCWI_UK
A woman escaping domestic violence just came to us. Her local authority would not house her because she has the words
#NoRecourseToPublicFunds
printed on her visa, making her street homeless during a global pandemic, putting her and everyone else at risk of
#COVID2019
🚨🚨We took our

campaign to No.10 Downing Street to tell this govt we need shorter & more affordable routes to settlement now!
Watch Praxis campaigners tell you why...
Share our message and take action. The fight is not over.
The whole of Praxis wants to give a massive thank you to our receptionist Ruksana who has been one of the only staff coming in almost every day, sending documents to service users and the Home Office, making sure that we can carry on providing vital immigration advice
#keyworker
Are you looking for good news? High Court just ruled that
#NRPF
is unlawful & breaches the Human Rights Act, as it forces 1000s to extreme poverty;among them many of the people we help at Praxis. Congrats to
@UnityProjectLdn
and
@dpg_law
for this success!
The House of Lords sat until nearly 4am this morning debating the
#AntiRefugeeBill
. For anyone who couldn’t stay up all night, here’s just a *tiny* flavour of some of the changes peers have been tirelessly pushing for 👇(1/6)
🎉Great news!🎉
The House of Lords inflicted big defeats on the Nationality and Borders Bill last Night - peers said:
NO to discriminating against refugees based on how they travel!
NO to citizenship-stripping powers!
YES to the right to work for asylum seekers!
Thank you to the 45 organisations who signed on to our letter urging the Government to rethink the Borders Bill. No-one should be penalised just because of the route they take to seek safety. Read in full here 👉
We are excited and honored to share that we have been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of this year

appeal for our work bringing the Windrush scandal and hostile environment injustices to light
Success! In April a woman called us, her leave expiring in 48 hours and no one was able to help with her application. Our caseworker powered through for 2 days and managed to submit an application in record time... and we just found out that it was successful!
#FridayFeeling
Yesterday we took the petition 50,000 of you signed directly to Rishi Sunak's door
Our message is loud & clear: migrants & refugees are always welcome here
The cruel Refugee Ban Bill may have passed, but we won't stop fighting for a compassionate society

We are delighted to announce that Dr Debbie Weekes-Bernard, London’s Deputy Mayor for Communities and Social Justice, will be joining Praxis in 2022 as Chair of the Board of Trustees!

Stop The Waiting.
We all want to feel like we belong but some of us are denied any security by a cruel immigration system, involving stressful, costly visa applications for decades - even though our lives + futures are in the UK.
Join the campaign here:
Success! We helped a mother of 2 to get leave to remain - despite living in the UK since she was a child, because of unfair immigration rules she was never able to get a visa.
After living in limbo for years, her and her two children can finally be safe.
#CharityTuesday
It took us 1 year to secure leave to remain for a 19 y/o woman who came to the uk when she was 2. Without a visa she missed out on uni this year, but the decision from
@ukhomeoffice
finally arrived - she is now able to move on with her life. She just sent us flowers & we are 😍

In April the minimum income required for people to live with their foreign partner will increase to £29k - 50% of Brits don’t earn this amount.
This Valentine's Day, email your MP about this heartless policy:
Good news just came in - a woman came to see us in March after she lost her husband, a British citizen. Alone and with no recourse to public funds, she was at risk of losing her accommodation. It took us 8 months, but she now has indefinite leave to remain and secure housing.
We helped a family of 4 to get visas. The amount of evidence required by
@ukhomeoffice
even for the simplest applications is so vast that it took us days just to go through all transactions on their bank accounts - time that we could have spent helping more people in need. 1/2
BREAKING: the police tried to stop our banner drop
This World Refugee Day, we couldn’t let them silence us: REFUGEES WELCOME, ALWAYS
📍Parliament, London
Straight from Praxis office: one of our caseworkers just rung a client to tell her that she finally got Indefinite Leave to Remain.
Everyone in the room could hear the screams of joy at the other side of the phone. Big smiles on everyone's faces here.
Today is a good one.
In the four years since the
#Windrush
scandal, all we’ve seen is the Home Office failing to right the wrongs of the past.
There needs to be justice for the Windrush generation, now.

Unfair immigration rules make it impossible for thousands of young people like Vitoria to go to uni.
It shouldn't be

This is a migrant tax.
People building their lives here & paying taxes to fund our NHS will see a 68% fee hike to be able access the healthcare they help fund.
It punishes some of the most vulnerable in society for being born outside the UK.

We just started helping a mother and her son. He's 18 months, and before we met them they were sleeping rough.
It will take every minute in the day of our caseworker just to understand what path in the labyrinth of the immigration system the family should follow to be safe.
50,000 people & 270 organisations say: everyone has human rights.
We stand against the Refugee Ban Bill.
We stand for compassion and kindness.
The fight isn't over.
First good news of 2020! A woman came to us after having been denied leave to remain 4 times, even if she had been taking care of her British mother full time since 2014. It took us 5 months to gather all the evidence, but yesterday she was finally granted leave to remain.
Our service user Michelle saves lives while working for the NHS: "I see people die every day, I see terrible things that I will never forget in my life." Despite her service,
@ukhomeoffice
is asking her to pay £2000+ to renew her visa.
@JCWI_UK
Thank you to all of the supporters and allies who joined our call to make sure that free school meals stayed available to all children who need them, no matter their parents' immigration status. (3/8)
We are so proud of
@ameliagentleman
for this achievement and honored for having worked with her to uncover the
#WindrushScandal
. It is fantastic to have such a great journalist as an ally fighting for migrants’ rights.
"It's really hard to hear Suella Braverman say such ludicrous things when you have clients telling you they're suicidal because they can't get off the streets." Praxis legal advisor
Let's be clear, people are on the streets because of the political choices of this government.
The 10 year route to settlement has been cut down to 5 years for young migrants in the UK! Congratulations to
@WeBelong19
on this amazing news and their tireless work to make it happen - it's an incredible step forward 👏👏👏
We’re horrified to hear the Home Secretary describe sleeping rough as a “lifestyle choice,” while it’s her department’s policies that are pushing people onto the streets🧵
A woman called our advice line: her leave to remain is expiring tomorrow and due to lockdown she has been unable to access support anywhere else. If free immigration advice was already difficult to find,now it’s almost impossible. Many people are slipping into being undocumented.
COMPASSION NOT CRUELTY
We've joined with 60+ charities, NGOs and human rights organisations to reject the cruel Illegal Migration Bill in its entirety to protect everyone’s rights.
We're calling on Parliament to
#StopTheBill
to save lives.
🚨London Mayor introduces free school meals for ALL primary school children in London from September 2023 🚨
Too many kids living in poverty continue to miss out in the existing system - this will make a HUGE difference to many families we work with
“I wanted to make my life in the UK and contribute, but I don’t feel safe here any more. The
@ukhomeoffice
has behaved in such a cruel, legally indefensible and economically illogical way that I have completely lost faith in the British state.”
The rejection of the extension of
#FreeSchoolMeals
during the holidays is shameful and incomprehensible. These provide a lifeline, in particular for children in need whose parents have no recourse to public funds & are left without access to a safety net
Some good news today✨
After years of legal fights involving solicitors, strenuous back and forth with the Home Office, hours upon hours of casework, lots of patience and sacrifices, a mother we support finally got her visa.
Her and her child can now start building their life.
On
#IWD2020
let's remember that hostile immigration policies - including
#NRPF
disproportionately affect women. Survivors of domestic violence can't get immediate support when leaving their abuser; single mothers can't access public welfare for them and their children.
Rishi and Suella say they’re going to strip people seeking safety of their human rights because “that’s what the British public want”.
Let’s show them how wrong they are.

@JCWI_UK
We just spoke with one of our service users, a single mum, who has been left with no support whatsoever during the pandemic. She’ll be thrilled to know that
@BorisJohnson
is going to change this.
10 years ago today, Theresa May announced her plan to create “a really hostile environment for illegal immigrants.”
We’ve seen the consequences of this for the past decade: lives ruined, or even ended, simply because someone doesn’t have the ‘right’ paperwork. (🧵)
We believe that all children who need them should get free school meals. Ask your MP to help make free school meals available to all children, no matter their parents’ immigration status:
#FreeSchoolMealsForAll
Fantastic achievement: in a great U-turn from the government, people like our service user Michelle working for the NHS and saving lives won't have to pay for the NHS surcharge as part of their visa.
Some good news just came in - a woman in her 70s came to Praxis in Feb: her visa almost expired, she had no access to public support&had to keep working despite her age. We worked on her case for 6 months: her visa has now been extended and she'll be able to finally retire.
As we are trying to make sense of new immigration rules that will make rough sleeping ground for refusal of leave to remain, we are also trying to submit as many applications as possible before Tuesday, when immigration health surcharge are due to jump from £400 to £624 a year.
Next, Innovation in Housing 🏠

Today, while MPs debate the Refugee Ban Bill again, we're taking our petition to govt with
@FreefromTorture
,
@RefugeeTogether
&
@freedomunitedHQ
to stand against these cruel & inhumane plans.
Together, we can show this govt that we won't stand for this:
We deeply oppose these cruel plans.
Every person, regardless of what they look like or where they are from, should be treated with dignity & respect.
This inhumane policy is trying to divide people & drive hostility towards those seeking safety here.
It is an attack on mixed-nationality families.
The govt. increased the minimum amount a spouse must make by £20k to £38.7k for a family visa. 75% of Brits don't make £38.7k.
75% of Brits are now unable to live w. the person they love if they happen to have a different passport.
"Mothers and children are being made homeless at a week’s notice."
This govt's policy change is leaving more and more vulnerable people at risk of exploitation and facing homelessness.
That's why we signed
@refugeecouncil
letter demanding change.

@BellRibeiroAddy
Our legal team works tirelessly so that migrants can live safely and in dignity.
@ukhomeoffice
attacks on lawyers – linking them with traffickers and those ‘playing and profiting from the system’ – is unacceptable.
This is amazing news. The £1k+ fees for citizenship held back so many children and young people from being formally recognised as British. This ruling will allow so many people to obtain the documents they need to move forward with their lives. Well done to all those involved!
As we are preparing for a new lockdown, it is essential that everyone is protected and can safely self isolate. This includes migrants facing homelessness - they have been protected during the first wave, we need to make sure that they can be safe now too
#EverybodyIn
At a committee hearing, PM
@BorisJohnson
just said, referring to families on

We are so proud to have been a part of this incredible campaign to make sure that all eligible kids can access free school meals, regardless of their parents' immigration status ❤️

We do. That was 18 months ago. And we're still waiting.

during the Autumn term - meaning that thousands of children won't go hungry in the next few months.
“As long as such projects will lack clarity about the processes involved, and how client data would be used by the Home Office, we will not refer our service users into any such initiative, and we will strongly encourage our partners not to do so either”
Today, peers debate the
#BordersBill
again. With our partners, we’re calling on them to keep up the fight to stop the Government discriminating against refugees based on how they travelled to the UK. More here 👉
The UK High Court just ruled that it's legal to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.
If you are someone who just crossed the Channel in a desperate quest for safety, today is a frightening day.
We're horrified to read today that the Govt. is considering plans to allocate social housing based not on need, but on nationality.
Strict rules already in place mean that only UK citizens and people with permanent residency can access social housing. 1/2
We are a small charity, but we aim high - we want to see a world where migrants are not defined by the challenges they face, & everyone can live in safety. To make it there we need everybody's help: find out how you could change someone's life here
As we move into a new lockdown, the government must make sure everyone is safe – no matter where they or their parents were born.
That means food and shelter; support as unemployment soars; a refuge if escaping domestic violence.
How is evicting people seeking asylum onto the streets, DURING A PANDEMIC, in line with
@pritipatel
promise to have a more human approach to migration?
We are among hundreds of organisations asking to reverse this decision. Action needs to come now.
#StopAsylumEvictions
ICYMI: Today hundreds of migrants' rights organisations wrote to

and
@pritipatel
to say loud and clear:
#StopAsylumEvictions

The decision to evict thousands of people into homelessness during a deadly pandemic is inhumane.

Together with 46 others, we wrote to ministers to raise concerns that Clause 11 of the

will drive thousands more refugees to destitution and homelessness every year - the Government didn't listen but let's hope Lords will send them a strong message again today.
