Pleased to share that my newest article, "AI Outputs Are Not Protected Speech," is forthcoming in @WashULRev. The article has, I think, important implications for impending federal and state laws designed to reduce catastrophic risk from AI.

When authors of the AGI-denialist "stochastic parrots" paper publish "Fully Autonomous AI Agents Should Not Be Developed," you should start to worry that AGI really is imminent. When their main argument is that AGI will kill people, you should worry more.

@binarybits This is interesting! I guess I'd also say there will be several years before waymo is >80% of population. But I'd likely say that building cars and getting reg. approval were the bottleneck, and the models will be ready sooner (maybe now). Do you think that's wrong?

@binarybits As to the latter I agree, but that could cut in either direction. As to the former, what do you mean by close? Waymo seems like a big deal. Do you not expect them to be nationwide I the next 5 years, barring regulatory blocks?

@davidduwaer @davidad @Gabe_cc I think that we don't really know how much of the reasoning is reflected in the text stream. Yes, more test time compute gets you better reasoning. But it doesn't follow from that the tokens the extra compute produces represent most or all of the reasoning.

@binarybits This seems correct as a prediction about the transition from unsupervised pretraining on existing text to RL as the most important training paradigm. Do you think the prediction that this transition implies a plateau and/or much slower progress holds up, given o1, o3, etc.?
