We’ve started a Student-Applicant Support program for underrepresented students. If you’re considering applying to the Computer Science PhD program at Stanford, we will do our best to give you one round of feedback on your application. Apply by October 31
With some delay, happy to share that I have completed my PhD and I’m visiting
@RealityLabs
as a Research Scientist this year. I already miss everyone
@Stanford
, but I’m excited to be back in Toronto and I very much look forward to working with new colleagues
@Meta
.
📣 I’m recruiting 1-2 PhD students interested in
#HCI
,
#AR
, and Spatial Computing. More information:
If you’re interested, apply to Princeton CS () by Dec 15 and mention my name in your application ✨
We have multiple summer
#internship
opportunities at Meta Reality Labs Research (in Toronto). If you are a PhD student in
#HCI
and interested in AR/VR and gestural interactions, apply here:
A year ago today, I brought my research setup home from our lab. Reflecting on the past year, I realize I didn’t pay as much attention to my wfh setup as I should have, and now my knees and back are very unhappy 🥴 But I just found this checklist through Stanford that is helpful:
Yesterday, I was proud to see the strong PhD defense of
@ParastooAbtahi
. She completed a brilliant PhD on "From Haptic Illusions to Beyond-Real Interactions in Virtual Reality". Parastoo started working with me and
@dSeanMustard
in Mechanical Engineering 6 years ago. 1/5
I’m in New Orleans and excited to present our

Super excited that Dr. Mo Kari has joined
@PrincetonCS
as a Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellow—a very well-deserved recognition!
Stay tuned for the amazing research
@m0k4r1
will be leading at

The Princeton Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellows program has selected 15 scholars for its 2024 cohort from disciplines spanning the humanities, engineering, the sciences and the social sciences.
If you're interested in building a cage for your

Today I'll be presenting "Beyond The Force: Using Quadcopters to Appropriate Objects and the Environment for Haptics in Virtual Reality" at
#CHI2019
! Come join us in room Boisdale1 at 2:40 PM. For those who can't make it, here is a summary of our paper:
Looking forward to hosting this year's PhD in technical HCI office hour on Friday, November 11, 10-11am ET, with Professors
@parastooabtahi
@dj_hci
@amypavel
@tisjune
! Q&A: We will discuss common questions in the office hour and answer directly in the doc.
We conducted a survey and follow-up interviews to understand non-digital and manual self-tracking practices and the role of technology.

“TeamLab: Continuity” at the Asian Art Museum was a magical wonderland!
Also, a fun place to observe people and their perception of causality, as everyone was trying to figure out what aspects of the exhibit were interactive and in what way.
I’m curious… how many PhD dissertations have you read just for the content?
So excluding yours, those you read as examples when you were writing yours, your students’, and those you were asked to give feedback on (e.g., for a friend or as part of the committee).
We hosted a virtual research lab tour for a group of ~20 high school students on SpatialChat and it worked!!! w/ Elyse, Brian,

Oh-so grateful for my research advisors (old and new) ... words cannot describe.
Please support your students the best way you can - means more than you think!
Congratulations to Cyrus Vaccha and Nicholas Jennings on two great MS exit talks this week! Cyrus will start his PhD at Princeton and Nicholas is headed to KTH for an exchange program. Details on their awesome research in due time...
Announcing our paper on Adaptive Multimodal Assistants (AMMA) at
#IEEEVR2024
! We're presenting a new framework for guidance programs that adapts to users' needs. Join us Thursday, 8:30-9:45 AM in Ballroom H.
I brought the aurora borealis to my bedroom, now that I can’t travel to see it! :)
The beautiful

The Princeton Catalysis Initiative challenged scientists to tell their best research stories in under 8️⃣ minutes as faculty and industry partners listened in, alert for new ideas offering future collaborations:
Video description: Walking inside a large room. Camera panning from the floor up to the walls in front. Projection of hundreds of bright-colored pink, red, and yellow virtual flowers, streaks of light flashing across, butterflies flying around, and petals moving in the wind.
If you have a paper accepted to
#UbiComp2018
, I highly recommend applying for the N2Women Young Researcher Fellowship award. You get up to $1k for travel costs and a chance to organize the
@n2women
meeting. I had a great experience last year!
@ubicomp
I find documents with two columns much easier to read, but that’s just a personal preference. My question is not about one format vs. the other - I’m just curious why we use both formats at different stages (i.e., one column for reviewing, but two columns for camera-ready).
Well-deserved!! This is a fantastic paper that proposes and validates a sensorimotor model for simulating reach redirection, while accounting for sensory uncertainty; an important step towards effective utilization of illusory interactions in VR:
🏆 Our work on sensorimotor simulation of redirected reaching received a Best Paper Award at
#CHI2023
!
With
@dSeanMustard
at
@StanfordHCI
, we explored how stochastic optimal feedback control (SOFC) can be used to broadly simulate redirection in VR.
A fascinating talk by Dr.
@KaraCooney
, highlighting remarkable women who ruled in ancient Egypt and our perception of women in power today. I can’t stop thinking about what the state of our world would be if women had more power, especially these days...

At the final project fair for the course Human-Computer Interaction, 16 student teams showed off research & tool development for interactive & social computing. The teams addressed topics in robotics, education, ethics, art, language and socialization
Looking forward to (virtually) presenting our work at
@ACMUIST
today! I'll be presenting our work REACH+ on expanding the capabilities of robot-mediated haptics in VR, with
@dSeanMustard
and
@parastooabtahi
.
Congratulations to my amazing advisor
@dSeanMustard
for being named a Sloan Research Fellow! Have always felt very lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to work with you and learn from you! 🎉
Congrats to Professors Anari, Druckmann, Follmer, Good, Ma, Schumer, Sorkin & Zou

The only reason I can think of is potentially more space for line numbers, annotations, and note-taking? Do most reviewers make in-document edits/comments in their reviewing process?

It was exciting to see some highlights from ICRA here on Twitter, but it’s unfortunate that

will coincide. Is this usually the case?
While we highlighted ways in which digital tracking tools may support aspects of these practices, such as granting creative freedom and facilitating reflection through slow designs, we found that for some the richness of the experience is tied to the physicality of the practice.
Also, you can catch

Not sure to what degree of success, but we used it in our work: “Understanding Physical Practices and the Role of Technology in Manual Self-Tracking.” See section 6.3 in our paper:

Hover Camera looks really cool (or you can pre-order the Hover 2). Fleye Helmet seems pretty safe as well! Or you can build a "safe" cage for the Parrot's Rolling Spider like I have here (using carbon fiber rods, 3D printed joints, and a polypropylene mesh)!
If you’re interested in trying it,
@SpatialChatTeam
extended the free plan offer (25 participants, 3 rooms) until Feb 15th. Hope to see some educational pricing after that!
