my guess is that ppl don't want to deviate too far from other ppl's tastes out of fear that they won't be able to easily sell their houses when they "trade up", and designing anything defensively rather than offensively leads to really horrible outcomes.

all i want is for there to be a standardized ergonomic desk setup available at airbnbs in any given city. desk/good chair/monitor/keyboard/mouse. office equip gets pretty cheap at volume.....it would be so great if airbnb offered an "ergo desk setup" at cost to their hosts
