You can no longer use the argument "design is obvious" when on large, incomprehensible time scales, like you could do on your short hypotheticals. The approach to answering such a question is completely different when the length of time isn't feasible for any one experiment. You have to look at one tiny bit at a time. An aside, it would be odd for a complex system to not produce interesting things in 2 billion years. Physics actually demands it.
