This actually understates the story. There was a substantial movement among the factory owners to demand the U.K. join the war on the Confederacy’s side and use the RN to break the Union blockade which the workers resisted despite the mass unemployment of the “Cotton Famine”.

@ElonMusgraves I think the religion point is especially important because the great strength of the Tories over time is they’ve been attached to a Church with extremely flexible doctrine - much harder to move away from unpopular positions when you think said positions are divinely ordained.
