This actually understates the story. There was a substantial movement among the factory owners to demand the U.K. join the war on the Confederacy’s side and use the RN to break the Union blockade which the workers resisted despite the mass unemployment of the “Cotton Famine”.
TIL there's a statue of Abraham Lincoln in Manchester, UK, because despite the Civil War devastating the city's prominent textile industry, workers refused to process American cotton as a product of slavery, leading to Lincoln issuing a statement praising the people of Manchester

It’s so stealthy how monarchists have managed to set up dictatorship as something distinct from monarchy in the public mind as if an absolute monarch isn’t just a dictator whose dad was also a dictator.
@AERMorg After the abolition in:.France: a dictator.Germany: nazism.Greece: military dictatorship.Italy: facisme.Portugal: communsit dictatorship.Russia: communist dictatorship.Turkey: wars.USA: wars.And more :) . Yeah, abolish the monarchy and you will end up with a dictator :)).

It's all good to identify the problem but what no one wants to really reckon with is that being a "content creator" - ie a self-employed businessman living off of the adulation and financial largesse of others - is an inherently right wing thing to be.
Hasan sounded the alarm about right wingers dominating the online space for young men. 47% of 18-29 year old men just voted for Trump

The problem they have is they have so internalised the insane SW1 ethic that if a bribe is declared in the Register of Member's Interests it is magically no longer a bribe that it doesn't occur to them that other people, most people, in fact consider this insane.
This is insane. Labour’s Bridget Phillipson says she took a £14,000 donation, primarily to throw a birthday party. She’s smiling while she divulges this information. I’m genuinely in awe that they don’t appear to see how bad this looks.

Would be a fantastic bit for the U.K. to deliberately destroy its original industrial economy and then replace it with a new knowledge based one only to destroy that one as well.
Education Minister Jacqui Smith is asked by @cathynewman if she is "willing to see a university go bust" because of "massive funding problems". She says: "Yes, if it were necessary. Yes, that would have to be the situation.". Read here:

quite apart from the seething contempt for British muslims, we once again see the return of the mindset that "Labour Right politics cannot fail, it can only be failed" here.
Labour source: 'It's the Middle East, not West Midlands that will have won Street the Mayoralty. Once again Hamas are the real villains.'.

We must persuade people to once again believe that trains are nice to look at.
Tell me this isn't the most frustrating thing you've ever seen. We're burying most of this train line for literally no reason at all. Ballooning costs, just so people don't have to look at a train in a flat field.

Incorrect reading imo: Americans hate criminals as a generality but they love them in specific. The dashing bandit who stays one step ahead of the law is as much a part of American folklore as is the cop who doesn’t play by the rules but my god he gets results.
This might be reason to think that the popularist strategy of Harris playing up her background as a prosecutor might have outright backfired among some groups. The death of criminal justice reform may have been greatly exaggerated.

One of the reasons I love Warhammer Fantasy is there’s a character who looks like a frog but cast a spell so powerful it a) banished the Daemons from an entire continent and b) left him undead and his name is Lord Kroak.
Warhammer Fantasy is so funny cause you'll look up the most powerful mage in a faction and get people that look like mages and then for the lizardmen it's just this

I think we should stop thinking about anti-ULEZ backlash and start thinking about the specifically pro-ULEZ vote. The reason I and a number of my friends and relatives held our noses and voted for Sadiq was specifically to defend ULEZ and I think this can be seen in the results.

You’d hope that the press would understand incredibly basic bits of Labour Kremlinology like the fact that Labour Students is a production line of the kind of ultra-loyal Labour Right partisans that Starmer wants selected.
Can someone explain why so many Labour candidates in winnable seats are so young? Seems to be a swathe of 20-27 year olds being selected. Not a criticism but a different demographic to what came in in 97.

The average Labour MP’s conception of the ideal constituent is a dutiful little sheep who votes Labour every election but in between registers no opinions on any political issues whatsoever.
MPs must be able to do their work without intimidation and threats. Solidarity with @rushanaraali and I hope police will take action on threats of violence.

Another point on this is that two of the most important moments in the British road to democracy - the Great Reform Act and the 1911 Parliament Act were absolutely a consequence of parliament acting out of fear against its own convictions.
"For the first time since the 17th century. it seems that our elected representatives are acting out of fear rather than out of conviction. this is how a democracy dies". #trevorphillips, who has a record of making Islamophobic comments.

I do think the thing in British politics (that appears in somewhat different ways on left and right) that politicians are expected to celebrate religious beliefs that not only they do not themselves hold but are entirely contradictory with their own to be quite weird.
On this Good Friday, as we remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, let us reflect on the values of compassion, charity and selflessness he embodied. These values are at the heart of British values, inspiring us to build a society based on respect, tolerance and dignity for all.
