i think this headline is a mischaracterization of the situation. he’s being called to resign over creating a work environment that was uncomfortable and sometimes downright hostile to minorities
this is why i haven’t been answering media requests. thanks to
@rrpre
for reaching out and asking about my time at bon appétit before any of this week’s events went down.
annie's white cheedar mac & cheese for lunch but browned the butter and added parm and lots of black pepper. please hit me with your own improvements below.
i have a friend who chose her wedding day based on historical data. she saw that rain had never been recorded on that date in georgia, like, ever and true to form, it did not rain on her wedding day. i think about that a lot.
oh and what did it take me to go on the record (i.e. have my name on my quotes): conversations with 4 lawyers to make sure i wouldn’t get sued, written and verbal support from mgmt at
@nymag
, and calls/texts with at least half a dozen other journalists for advice including my EIC
today’s my first day at NYT and in lieu of congratulations lol my question is what have been your favorite traits in a great manager and/or great editor?
bon appétit was and is run like a popularity contest. your IG following is directly connected to how well you’re treated there or how important your input is considered. anyway, i’m going to sleep more in the AM...or maybe not! idk! i’m so tired!
i’m just heartbroken for ryan walker (adam’s asst) because after i was laid off, i felt like i left my friend (and the only other blk employee) alone in an place where i *knew* she would be mistreated. i’m immensely grateful that
@JesseASparks
stepped in to protect my girl.
earlier today, a former colleague shared a story of a black colleague doing footwork on a story about a black female line cook only to find that story reported and written by a white person months later. i was that little girl lol
BREAKING- A pipe burst earlier today at State Farm Arena will delay the counting of absentee ballots in Fulton County GA, one of the biggest in the state, for 3-4 hours. All Fulton County’s absentee ballots are processed at the arena. No ballots or machines were damaged: Official
station eleven taught me that people whose main talents are in communications and arts can survive an apocalypse and that’s what we call representation
yooooo, this is my local coffee shop! in March, when i couldn't leave my apt. because i thought i might have COVID, they dropped coffee beans off at my house. they employ a diverse group of people. they certainly don't deserve this.
i wrote this article because one night i was walking home and thinking about my time at bon app and got so angry that i had to exorcise all the BS i put up with in article form
there’s still so much to say about how i and the other people interviewed in this story were treated (or rather mistreated) but this is the most deeply reported story so far.
sometimes i take what i call “SVU naps,” which is when you fall asleep on your couch during an episode of Law & Order: SVU. it is its own nap category.
Shrill is gonna lose a lot of people when they type S-H-R into the search bar and see Shrek 1 & 2 are on Hulu. not me though. i already watched Shrek this week
there’s nothing too small to look forward to. it can be finally taking off your shoes or sitting down on the subway or going on a vacation. life is full of a million tiny things to look forward to sandwiched between big things to look forward to.
Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

new york's hottest club is the bird feeder i set up on my fire escape. we've got downy woodpeckers, cardinals, bleu jays, mourning doves, and no squirrels because i banged on the window and scared them away last week.
take it from me, your Wordle streak is eventually going to get broken. instead of letting SLUNG ruin your life (as it did mine), why not take charge and break it on your own terms. refrain from using Wordle and other NYT products tomorrow in support of the
@NYTimesGuild
the biggest personal problem i face is that my anger often manifests as crying and people think i'm sad when i'm actually pissed off. would appreciate any advice on remedying this since i've literally dealt with this since i was 8 lol
NEW: Condé Nast has suspended the Bon Appétit video editor behind It's Alive by Brad Leone.
Condé says there were "many concerns" internally about Matt Hunziker. Employees claim Hunziker's social media posts criticizing Condé likely got him suspended.
okay, ✨now✨ i can diminish, and go into the West and remain Galadriel. (special thanks to

for context, David Marchese asked Jann Wenner why his new book of interviews with rock masters includes no women or POC. and this answer is woof, but no surprise if you’ve read “sticky fingers” by
@joehagansays
the no. 1 problem with media is that being a good editor is significantly more valuable than being a good manager when they should be valued equally. great editors are allowed to get away with murder if they’re putting out stories that perform well.
every two-cat household needs a tiny sassy cat with no fear and the capacity to only love one person, and a big, floppy cat that loves anyone who feeds them and scares easily
finding myself quite against the proliferation of electric tea kettles. when did having a kettle on your stove at all times become an inconvenience?! the aesthetics alone!!!
Last week, my dad was telling me how jarred and hurt he was by Anthony Bourdain's death. I had no idea he'd had such a profound effect on my dad's life, so I talked to other men Bourdain's age about how they felt about him. This is the result:
i can't speak for all chefs, but let me just say that this bake sale has made me realize that pastry chefs are some of the most generous, kind, responsive, and *responsible* people i've had the pleasure of working with. makes me wish they were more appreciated in the food world!
i wrote this note to myself in 2018 after i was laid off three weeks before thanksgiving. i know the realities are very different now but i come back to it every time horrible layoffs come around. hope it can be useful to someone out there.
plus this would have been the second time in my time at BA that i was told that people had spoken badly about me without finding out who said it or what they specifically said.
at this point, the most offensive part of the “i don’t need the backstory, just the recipe” comment is actually the lack of originality 😬 get new jokes!
Good morning! Last summer, I pitched a restaurants newsletter and next week, March 22, Where to Eat: New York City arrives! It'll be Times subscriber-only but free for the first four weeks. It's going to be fun (and informative!) and I hope you'll sign up!
all i’m saying is if the fireworks are going to be a part of life in new york for the foreseeable future, perhaps it’s time to legalize weed (and expunge weed charges from the records of a few thousand people at the same time)
i’ll never forget the time (2014) i commented that a meeting was super productive because the deputy editor sent pitch prompts beforehand (everyone laughed and agreed) and then the managing editor pulled me into her office and admonished me for being “too familiar” with mgmt
my advice for paying off your student loans instead of waiting for a government hand out: live with roommates. make all your food at home. stop spending money on things you don't need. fake your own death. change your identity. leave your family behind. move to another country.
As part of the Where to Eat launch (first newsletter drops later today!), I’ll be interviewing
@desusnice
about eating well in New York City. Sign up for the virtual event below 😝
I’ve said before that you don’t know who your babysitter might become but you also don’t know who the people you babysat for so long ago (already incredible medical professionals) might become! This is so amazing
